First, the title doesn't match the subject of the article.
I do like Dr Nduom but I don't like politicians playing the 'Ghana' card. The minerals have always been there. yes. And there has always been Ghanaian companies/businesses around...yes. And they can follow the same process to take a chance and mine. So why is he complaining that a South African or an Australian company took the risk/initiative and is extracting the ore? If you left it up to ON:Y Ghanaian companies to extract minerals, you would never have the huge mines that are in Takwa or Obuasi and related investment. Ghana would never had made the huge sums of money in taxes without these companies. etc. etc. These companies are making huge sums of money...yes...of course. It's a business.
Ghana needs better oversight of these foreign mining companies....making sure that all ore is being recorded, taxes paid, royalties paid. This goes also for indigenous companies.

Dr. Nduom is not playing the nationalist card. What he is saying is what one may expect in a fairer relationship. The Ore exists in our land but foreign shareholders and institutions gain more from it than us. We have the Ore, and you have the capital, know-how and the technology. What percentage of proceeds should the foreign shareholders be entitled to?
The relationship should be structured as a partnership. Even better for us we will bring you in as tenants but we own the product and market it. We will of course pay you well by internal standards for your work and training in mining, refinery, and the design and manufacture of machinery and equipment, habitat and environmental work, etc.
The government of Ghana will be a majority shareholder and we structure your ownership so that your profits and capital outflows are within the context of our developmental needs. You will then be allowed to take the residue out for your external shareholders.
The government of Ghana being a shareholder also pays royalties, taxes and fulfils it's obligations to the communities where the mining takes place. We would of course have proportional representation on the board of directors and also get a complete picture of all mining operations and control over what is mined. That to me in a fairer balance of nationalism, business and capitalism.
At Present what happens is that capital flows out of our country for development and more investable capital in your countries and institutions. We remain poor and continue to be dependent on you in perpetuity. That is not fair. When the ore is all gone you will get out and leave us with the environmental damage that results from your activities.

This is the First Ghanaian politician to notice how bad our state men have mismanaged our resources . Diamond and Gold alone could solve the problem of our unstable Cedi , all we the government have to do is to keep them in a Reserve . By adding several Gold Bars monthly , is just like saving money that can't depriciate like paper Money . If you have a Billion worth of Gold and Diamond it remains what it is as foundation.
Now assuming you could Save till a $100 Billion worth of Gold and Diamond meaning you'll be able to support all the time making it very stable .
Sadly as it sounds our politicians solely think about the first 12 hours of a day not to think about the next day . The Future becomes a Journey forever to them and like we all know Rome wasn't built a day .

The earlier Europeans came to Africa purposely because of our natural resources. They started with trading and eventually colonised us because they were better educated in science and technology. On the other hand, many of us also got opportunity to study abroad and acquire the same knowledge. It's only Kwame Nkrumah who came back home and try to reverse the trend of given too much away of our natural resources to the advanced industrialised countries. He tackled Education and Industrialisation as the primary tools to empower Ghanaians but it was short lived.Today,we have completely lost direction,we don't know exactly what we want as a country, that's our first problem. There are thousands of Ghanaians studying abroad like Nkrumah but they don't have the same vision or wisdom if I may say.Again,we have millions of Ghanaians working abroad today than the era of Kwame Nkrumah yet the impact is strict minimal. Our mentality today is to get rich quick and forget about the rest.I don't blame anybody for that because we are living in a synthetic world at the mercy of capitalism, each man for himself.Kwame Nkrumah warned us about Neo-colonialism but we didn't understand.Ronald Regan,Ex-President of United States also informed us about the Recolonisation of Africa, did we really understand him?I don't think so.Unless we begin transforming all the natural resources by ourselves,we shall continue to remain poor and continue to enrich foreigners forever. To do that, govt must put a policy in place to bring home all the Ghanaian best brains abroad to help otherwise we are going nowhere.Thank you.

Kwame Nkrumah foresaw the exploitation of our rich and abundant resources by foreigners, who have the capital and technical-know-how. Nkrumah therefore, emphasised on technical education and the management of our resources by Ghanaians. But what happened after his removal from office was a disaster. His ideas, plans, policies and programs were abandoned by successive governments sending Ghana back to its former self. Nonetheless, we can start again to control, extract , process and manage our human and natural resources, if Ghana continues to be stable and we have a government that is oriented towards industrialisation. The fact is that we, as a nation, have to start training our citizens again at home and abroad in engineering, provide them with the necessary equipment and incentives to extract e.g. the mineral ores. The government should not stop there but train Ghanaians to turn the raw mineral ores into value-added finished products for both the local and foreign markets. China has made it through industrialisation, India, Brazil and others are going the same way, why not Ghana ? Note that the manufacturing industries can then help the other sectors such as agric, fishing, roads and railways to grow thereby generating more revenue to expand the industries.

I've always wondered why Mahatma does not consult brilliant and experienced people be it political opposition to help run the country. The country belongs to Ghanaians and every opinion must count towards growth and development. This administration is mostly surrounded by mini and peanut ideas, task-oriented, Yes-skilled personnel. They should get out of the sandbox and reach out to ppl like Paa K and like minded development and progressive thinkers to help. Leadership is knowing your shortcomings/weaknesses and looking, and reaching beyond your immediate surrounding to seek the "right" personnel to advise as well as support steer your efforts. Obama and other leaders reached out to republicans to run the department of Defence. Why cant Mahama do the same? Got confidence? Is he able reach outside his party independently without interference from his wife and small mindedness others?

I know Dr Ndoum only in pictures but I have read that he is a rich man, a Dollar-Millionaire - so my question is :
"WHY DOESN'T HE INVEST IN GOLD MINES, AFTER HE OBSERVED THAT FOREIGNERS ARE ENRICHING THEMSELVES WITH GHANA'S GOLD ? "
His reasons for not investing in Ghana's gold are certainly the same for other Ghanaians whou could have done that.

Papa Kwesi Nduom has got it spot on!
Our abundant natural resources are controlled by foreign interests.
We willing give away concessions to foreign companies with over-generous tax concessions. They take advantage of our lax systems and salt away huge profits paying little tax.
Thus, we do not get enough from our resources to meet our development needs.
We must set out a plan to take control of our resources by training technical and managerial personnel to man home-grown industries. We must mine our own minerals, build our own infrastructure asnd extract our own oil and gas. Profits accruing to our national coffers will fund our development, rather than line to pockets of the multinationals.
Let us act now!!

I wonder whom Ghana's gold and other natural resources were benefitting when Dr. Nduom served in President Kufuor's NPP cabinet. nothing was ever heard from Dr. Nduom then, though those natural resources never went on vacation during the years that Dr. Nduom and the NPP were running the country. Apparently, Dr. Nduom was blind in the years that he served in President Kufuor's cabinet and held his silence, but now in this election year, Dr. Nduom now can see, and he even can talk.
