Blame corrupt public officials for allowing it into the country.

Not all expired items are dangerous to be eaten, especially those branded for example'best before 10th July 2016'.After July 2016 they can be eaten but the taste may not be the same.

We used three descriptions when it comes to shelf life:
Sell-by date - are used for perishable foods with less than one month shelf life. It gives the consumer a bit more leeway with regards to when to cook and consume that product. Consumers should purchase a product before or on their sell-by date and they then still have a certain amount of time in which to use that item before the expiry date, which is when the product would start to lose its freshness, quality and begin to go bad.
Use by date - is given to foods that are microbiologically highly perishable and could become a danger to health. It is the date up to and including which the food may safely be used if stored properly. If it is indicated that a product should be used by a certain date, you should consume or cook that item before or on the specific date on the package.
Once that date has passed, the food item will no longer be deemed fit for consumption according to the manufacturer and government health and safety specifications.
Best before- Best before dates tend to apply to items that may keep fresh for several weeks, months or even years. It is the date up until when the food will remain in optimum condition, i.e. will not be spoilt. Foods with a shelf-life up to 12 weeks are marked ‘‘best before day, month, year’’. Example: BB 041211
Foods with a longer shelf-life are marked ‘best before end of month, year’. Example: BBE1211
The best before date does not mean that the food item must be consumed by that date. It is just an indication or estimation as to when a product will only start to lose its freshness and optimum quality.
It is dependent on how the type of product and how it was handled during storage or distribution.
