We all know that the Mirror is basically an entertainment newspaper but are they not taking entertainment too far when they say that, ".... having married into one of the country's most affluent families.....". This quoted statement I suppose, is in reference to the Wampah family. If it is, is it a factual statement? Is the Wampah family affluent? Or did the Mirror, like all other newspapers in this country, generously and recklessly misapply the adjective 'affluent' in the same way that other adjectives such as 'expert' 'guru', 'specialist' and so on and so forth are randomly misapplied and dumped upon an unwary reading public?

I mean come on, Dr Wampah is a mere public servant who must have got to the top of the Bank of Ghana by the conveyor-belt system of promotions in that establishment. Of course this must have been hastened by the possibility that the NDC, having sensed that the man had criminal affinities as well as the NDC-preferred tendencies of incompetence, promoted and confirmed his appointment as Governor of the Bank.

If indeed Wampah is really affluent - as indicated by the Mirror, with his public service salary, then we should try calling in the equally useless IRS to verify his tax obligations.

Just fancy having the governor of Bank of Ghana, having to share his decent family with a well-connected cocaine pedlar and Ghana as a law-abiding country harbouring this time-hardened drug dealer. It is wonderful that a wanted fugitive has been apprehended and going to face trial. Indeed, it is not like elements of the John Mahama NDC gov't have not had dealings with wanted criminals. Recently, in the infamous "Ameri Energy deal" an internationally wanted criminal was heavily involved in structuring a deal in which Ghana under the leadership of John Mahama, lost anywhere between $200-300million dollars for illicit financial gain. In faraway Japan, a representative of John Mahama, as in the Ambassador had to be recalled, for dealing with criminals running a gambling casino at the Commission.
But it seems the Governor is under siege because somebody wants to raid the BoG Vaults and wants Kofi Wampah out.
The President in his SOTN address said the DKM microfinance scam was a result of the lack of effective supervision. That was the reason he gave, for the scam-the loss of millions of cedis Ghanaians invested in that microfinance company.
There is a banking supervision department at the BoG, and whoever was in charge and shirked his responsibility must go as part of internal mechanisms to strengthen the institution. But to suggest the Governor should stand down because of the scandal begs the issue, when it is being alleged, the first family and specifically the first Lady is behind the microfinance company responsible for the scam, and the President wants the Governor to use taxpayer money to bailout victims of their fraud, which the Governor has roundly refused, which is the right and proper thing to do. This is not the first time the Governor has had to clash heads with the President. There was a time Eurobond funds sourced from the market was alleged to have been used to capitalize the BoG because the BoG was under-capitalized. It was captured in one of the erudite dissections of the state of the economy routinely done by the astute Economist when he posed the question as to what specific projects the Min of Finance had in mind when they went onto the market for that facility. Till date Ghanaians have not got an answer. The appropriation of those funds didn't go down well with the Finance Minister and the President, but that was the right and proper thing, which the Governor did.
It must be made clear that Kofi Wampah would not bailout victims of the fraud of the first family using taxpayer funds and wherever the funds of that scam is lodged, those involved should go and bring it and give it back to members of the general public they have defrauded. Henry Akpenamawu Kofi Wampah PhD is the last standing block between collapsing the BoG and the looters. By the way, when did he start going by the name George?

Until recently British Criminals used to flee to the Costa Del Sol in Spain. Now they are running to Ghana which should worry us all. Kofi Wampah himself is a known crook who recently embezzled £100,000 from the Bank of Ghana coffers. This amount according to him was incidentally overpaid to a Philanthropic organisation, s account in Great Britain.
