Governance under the NDC government is all about 'opium of the people. They enjoy everything under the sun but ask us to wait for our basic needs in heaven. And as they ask us to tighten our belts for future betterment, they've already loosened theirs for immediate consumption. They didn't even respect our intelligence when they said there would be paradise in Ghana if we gave them another mandate after the 2016 elections. The truth is that, everything they promise is a mirage and we will never find comfort under them because; they are con-men with con plans.

The main reason for the poor standard of education is how our JHS and SHS were implemented. It was in a crazy rush and no educationist could speak against it. The government had gone for IMF loan and Ghana was requested to reform her educational system. Reform was necessary but not in that rush.
There were no teachers and books for the reforms so the "Old teachers" taught the new subjects that were introduced. There are no workshops and labs constructed for the practical subjects. Even as I write, many schools have no workshops and labs, yet such practical subjects are supposed to taught. Some of us who opposed the way the reforms were being done were seen as AGAINST. I worked during vacations as an assistant examiner who helped with setting questions, develop marking schemes and marked WAEC exams at that time. Some of complained about the performance of the first batch of JSS. We were told that "if a student wants to write a cow and cannot write it but draw a cow, we should mark it correct for the student." What then do you expect?
We spoke against 3 year SHS but that we should maintain a 4 year one but because of politics, the government at that time stuck to 3 year SHS. Some schools like Okuapemman, Prempeh Achimota and the schools considered as First Class can do it in 3 years because they have experienced teachers and facilities that go into teaching and learning but we are talking about a whole country. Kuffour came and made SHS duration for 4 years only for Mills to come and change it to 3 years again. The politicians with Nunoo Mensah as one of them simply played politics with our educational system.
As at now, go to our universities and see the number of students a lecturer has to handle. Is it not true that some students stand outside to take lectures at Legon?
In all this, lecturers are not well paid and students have no access to new books. They still use books published in the 1950s. So, some lecturers don't care but just push the students into the system. After all, that is what the government wants. I don't want to write a thesis on the fallen standard of education in Ghana but I put the blame on Papa Jerry on how the educational reforms were carried out. How do you start a reform without even a pilot program?
For some time now, teachers are not well paid, some are not paid for close to two years, there are no Learning and Teaching materials in our schools. What do you expect? Alorvi who was the president of NAGRAT once said that if you don't pay us and you want to force us to teach, we shall teach the kids that a grasshopper is a Helicopter. During the time of the USSR, workers had a maxim which goes like this: "They pretend to pay us and we also pretend to work." Yes, many Ghanaians will be shocked on how Continuous Assessments are done in most schools. Nunoo, you were part of the government so take your share of the blame.

Frank thanks a lot for your assessment and analysis of this problem. Any adult who understands education is sad of how Ghana's standard of education has fallen from grace to grass. Gone were the good old days when one had to burn the mid-night oil just to go through "O" Level exams. Now Masters degrees are just given on silver platters. The irony of the whole situation is that these very politicians who destroyed the education simply send their children overseas to study, eg JJ Rawlings. Still people don't see the damage these politicians and soldiers have done to this country. Let JJ's car pass and you'll hear people showering praises him JJ,JJ,JJ. It's equally sad that Ghanaians can't call spade a spade.

Billy, the Developed Countries also teach fables and legends. They even teach Moral and Cultural values. Ask any educationist how much inputs the government put into the Sciences, particularly engineering and technology even right from elementary schools. Ask any student even at te tertiary level the number of times they do labs. The government is now interested in turning Poly institutions into universities without taking into consideration what it takes to build a modern university. Mushroom universities are being allowed to spring up everywhere without even qualified lecturers and supervision. Why should this happen and who should we blame? The brochure that was used for Ghana@59 tells how rotten our educational system has become. Too many MBAs and PhDs with nothing to show for. Many of them are even fake.

They know the damage that religious education can cause to the human mind and human society and that is why they rather encourage us to go overboard with that stuff which they forced upon us whilst they avoid it like the plague. As a result, Africans have become intellectually emasculated and dispirited. We wait upon poor ol God to come down and do everything for us whilst we cheat, steal, lie, commit adultery profusely and go to sleep.
The problem with the education sector in Ghana is not whether govt puts in more money here or there. It is because the govt has lost control and grasp of education. They do not know what the problems with it are and they do not know what to do to make it relevant and beneficial to our peculiar needs.
Our govts are being blackmailed and mesmerized by global capitalist institutions such the IMF and the World Bank to adopt all sorts of unfriendly, unsuitable and unproductive western oriented educational policies that dont work and have never worked to our interest.
As I have stated above, we need strong intelligent and dedicated honest leaders to stand firm and take us out of the rut. The wishy-washy, namby-pamby insipid types like the Rawlings, Kufuors and Mahamas are just typical dozy dumb third world leaders who do not know whats going on around them in the world.

Mr Agbenu, now that the man is showing that he is not a complete buffoon but that he also has visible strains of good sense, let us embrace his ideas.
I mean I am 100% in support of what he is saying here on this subject. The only thing is that the solutions he is offering will not work.
If he is saying that we must form committees, obviously comprising the same kind of people who are themselves victims of the unsuitable and unproductive educational system and who call themselves experts, to rectify the bad situation that we find ourselves in, in the educational sector, then we can all assure ourselves that nothing will ultimately be solved.
What we need here are intelligent people who can think outside the box to revolutionize the entire educational system. At our level of development, we need an educational system that is geared towards nation-building and not greedy and capitalist educational pursuits.
An educational system based on greed and capitalist pursuits, only produces a few successful individuals who naturally, would end up being satisfied only with their small glamorous corner and not the myriad of nagging problems that faces an entire developing society.
If only we can get a few no-nonsense and disciplined leaders of the caliber of Kwame Nkrumah to either reinvigorate the state educational sector to produce the kind of quality student material that made this country a great country in the sixties, illiterate graduates who dwell mainly on institutional privilege would be a thing of the past.
If we can do that, nobody will waste unnecessarily huge amounts of their hard-earned small income to educate their children in fanciful private institutions when the state can do better. The state has the capacity to do this but this ability is continuously hampered, undermined and frustrated by a collaboration of criminals in the administrative depts of the state educational system and the ownership of private schools whose major interest is not aimed at a developed society but by how much money he can make out of client-students to make him stand out from the deprived crowd.
Of course the string of inept and daft govts since 1966, are the supervisors of this cruel system that seeks to make a few individuals in society better and therefore richer than the rest. A good example is Rawlings who totally destroyed what was left of the then educational system that Nkrumah left and subsequently and selfishly sent his own children abroad to get better training to lord it over their peers. His daughter who is not even a registered voter, but wants other inferior, stupid and badly educated registered voters to vote for her, is a clear example of the capitalist lust to look down upon, use and dominate others in society for our individual benefits only.

I was a former student of University of Science and Technology in the 80’s. I studied Graphic Design and most of our contribution to society is shown in the advertising sector. I also recognized the medical field as a reasonable contributor to society.
The actual technology sector such as Architecture, Building Technology, Agriculture Computer Science, etc, have nothing to show. Show me any magnificent edifice produced by our architects in Ghana. Is the agricultural department able to feed itself? It could not even have a chicken or “ampesi” farm in Kumasi or Accra campus. Now the whole educational system is watered down to incomprehensive and unwarranted levels such as levels 100, 200, what a heck is that? We have a proliferation of pocket universities producing excess liberal minds who desire to carry laptops around but don’t know the value of them except 419 deals.
In 70’s we went to elementary schools in clean buildings with desks in remote Ghana country side. Today we have children in the rural areas sitting on dusty floor.
Every high school kid wants a phone more expensive than many folks use in the western world. Don’t let me talk about the sleeping ministry of education. They are non-functional.
I and so PROUD of Asafo who is building cars. What is the government doing to help him? It will be great if the government has a sizable share in it. Oh! Africa.

I did comment earlier on the General's comment on Ghana as an importing country and its educational system. What I want to add is that the General should be extremely careful in assessing our educational system. What studies has done to prove support his conclusion about our educational system? Academic programs do have different goals and different expectations. One should not expect someone who reads history to be able to fix his car and build his house. I have a degree in pubic policy, however I can fix my car and build my house not because of my degree but because I have been able to learn other things on my own.
I challenge the General to test our graduates in construction technology and automotive engineering to see if they will be able to build a house or fix a car. Knowledge must be related to practice and tend to be forgotten over time for lack of application.
The General should tour the entire globe to see the contribution of Ghana's educational system to world development. If the products of our educational are not productive at home some of the blame could be put at the door steps of the General for the culture of silence he imposed on Ghana during his time as a member of the PNDC. Also, one can conclude that he failed as general because he could not link with our universities to match skills that are demand in the armed forces in interest of so-called national security.
The General should behave like a statesman by having an honest conversation with the educational authorities about his concern with the educational system.
The issue with our educational system has do do with lowering of admission standards and this includes JSS, SSS, the polytechnics and the universities and inadequate infrastructural facilities.

Why change the old educational system were inherited from the british? The JSS SSS system introduced by the PNDC has destroyed the system. There were deficiences in the sytem but look I have lived in Europe for more than 25 years and must tell you we had one of the best systems as regards basic education. How come an African who was educated in Africa can come to Europe and can teach mathematics if his school education is inferior.

It is very refreshing to hear these sentiments from Brigadier General Nunoo-Mensah (rtd). Our school system has deteriorated considerably. The problems extend beyond the students to poorly trained/qualified teachers, terrible school administration, and bad learning conditions. How many public libraries do we still have in Ghana?
It is true that our school system is mainly "chew and pour" with very little application of knowledge. This is especially true for our regular secondary schools and universities. The exceptions used to be the polytechnics, where applied knowledge was the back-bone of their programs. Teachers had applied experience which they could teach to their students. Applied programs such as plumbing, electricals, engineering, auto mechanics, catering, etc., were taught in these schools.
It is therefore very sad and uninformed that the government sees a need to convert the polytechnics to universities. Soon, their students will join the generation of chew and pour graduates with no ability to apply what they have learned. Instead of moving forward, we continue to move backwards!

Useless talk. We do have doctors, nurses, pharmacists who are working in various health facilities and applying their knowledge. We do have lawyers working in our law courts. We do have finance, business and policy experts working in both public and private sectors and doing well. Granted that our educational standards have fallen, however there is still good work being done. The fact that you can remember Pythagoras theorem and be very good with your hands does not mean that you are better educated than others. This man really needs to think before he speaks.
