This KB Asante has proven himself to be not in touch with reality. He is indeed a relic of the one-man party - forget about one-party state - which Nkrumah CPP and era was. What a bunkum thought. Old man please go to Zimbabwe where your kind is still welcome. We can't afford your nonsense anymore. Come to think of it, what would stop an incumbent president to rig elections ad infinitum until he or she dies and pass on the presidency to their children or spouses? We have seen it happening in Zimbabwe where Robert Mugabe is planning to run again in 2018 when he would be 97 years old. What a foolish idea. Enough of you senile old man.

Nkrumah was a communist dictator and Mr. Ashanti is also a communist relic. The Whiteman left us with a parliamentary system in which the prime minister can go on ruling as long as he remains the leader of his party and the party also wins power every five years.
When Nkrumah lost his parliamentary seat at Bokum Square in Accra, and was no longer eligible to enter parliament let alone become prime minister of the country, he changed the system into a corrupted presidential/parliamentary system in which the checks and balances of both systems were removed, leaving him with absolute powers and later on turned Ghana into a one party state.
If Nkrumah had wanted to rule Ghana throughout his life and had the support of the electorate to renew his mandate every five years credibly, there was no problem because the system allowed it, and we saw how Tony Blaire ruled for more than ten years and finally relinquished power to Gordon Brown in his third five year term. But the system is not as loose as one might think, it has its own checks and balances embedded in it, and we saw what happened to Margaret Thatcher in 1990 when she was forced to resign by her own party because she was becoming too "iron" for them.
Just like Nkrumah, Mr. Ashanti wants us to remain in the presidential system without real separation of powers as found in the Rawlings Green Book Constitution, and without 2-term limit to enable the relics turn our country into another one party state again. Let Mr. Ashanti get it into his head that we can either choose the modest parliamentary system without term limits or the almighty presidential system with 2-term limits and real separation of powers but no more.

Anybody who carefully studied our constitution would realize that it was made to sustain dictatorship, and that's why I call it Rawlings Green Book. From the horse's own month represented by Bagbin, the hands and legs of our parliament are tied by the constitution to render it ineffective. We can't be proud and say that we have separation of powers in our system because the parliament is deliberately made to be a tool and decoration for the executive.
Our system is neither a parliamentary system nor presidential one because; the former has a prime minister (first among equals) who sits in parliament with his ministers only chosen from it and shares the chamber with the opposition and its leader for face to face deliberation of policies. The parliamentary system has its own checks and balances embedded in it. The presidential system on the other hand, is based on strict separation of powers (Executive, Legislature and Judiciary) to check the executive president with vast powers from abusing those powers, which are not available to the prime minister who governs through the parliament and not outside of it as the executive president does.
In Ghana, we have an executive presidential system without the needed checks and balances to prevent abuse since the parliament is shackled by the constitution to serve as another organ of the executive. I believe it was deliberately done to serve the dictatorial tendencies of Rwalings, and I blame him and his PNDC Cuban-Style Communist Dictatorship for all the shortcomings in our constitution.
The mere fact that members of the Council of State are appointed by the sitting president and leave office when he leaves renders them ineffective, far more ineffective than the parliamentarians.

Mr. Asante, that's a very "OLD SCHOOL THINKING" in the 21st century. We don't need more monarchs in Ghana, because we already have the antiquated—but functional—chieftaincy mumbo jumbo there. Where the hell are you guys coming from these days? Former President Kufuor quite recently talked about an “appointed upper chamber for Ghana”—to do WHAT and here you come with this very silly suggestion to cause more political confusion in Ghana.
Your proposal, if adopted, would quickly lead to political and financial chaos, corruption, anarchy, political persecution or opponents, incompetency, nepotism, administrative LAZINESS, dysfunctional bureaucracy and all the other foolishness & evil that go with staying in power at all cost—especially BAD LEADERS!!.
“The big and sophisticated United States of America has had two-terms for its presidents since 1776” with George Washington—who was even begged to run for a THIRD term, but he refused. LOOK at the ascension of America in terms of Political stability, great Economy, functioning Democracy, high level of Technological development, fearsome Military power, etc., etc.
Even since its founding in the late 18th century, American Congressmen/women (MPs in Ghana), serve only 2 years and MUST run for reelection. Only Senators have 6-year terms before reelection and American Presidents serve two 4-year terms—if they’re reelected. So, two 4-year terms are good enough to run that SMALL country of only some 23 million people. Kwame Nkrumah is long dead, Negro, and in his beloved coffin was also his version of socialism/communism on his side. Check around the world to get really educated, Mr. Asante!!

With all due respect, Mr. Asante must shut-up, and keep his anti-democratic ideas to himself.
Ghana will not pursue a Communist system of government that is disguised as a pseudo-democratic rule. Term-limit for the presidency is the bedrock of a legitimate democratic rule.
Ghana is not going to emulate the counterfeit democratic rule that leaders of other African countries are pursuing to keep themselves in power for life.
We've come a long way from the mistakes and agonies of the first republic of Ghana. We don't want to use coups to remove our leaders from office any longer.
Term-limits in conjunction with the ballot box is the more dignified, and less agonizing option for change of government in our beloved Great Ghana.
May Lord Almighty continue to bless our beloved Great Ghana: Amen!!!

Yes, Germans are doing good because they've identified a system of governance that suits them and they do not follow other countries blindly. Have we in Ghana thought of what's good for us? We know most of our leaders are corrupt, greedy and looters, yet we generously give them one or two terms to allow them to come and accomplish their corrupt deeds, all in the name of democracy.
On the other hand, if we implement what K.B. Asante is suggesting, there is the fear of plunging the country into an infamous one-party state or a dictatorial form of governance as most people are lamenting on this forum.
All the comments on this subject show that, as a nation we know our short-falls as to how democratically-elected governments are affecting our development yet, we keep doing the same thing over and over again because it's been good for other countries; forgetting that the African mentality is not the same as these successful countries.
Personally, I believe we should device our own system of government. I would suggest an all-inclusive government similar to the Union Government Kutu Acheampong proposed sometime ago, fortified with formidable institutions.

The blessing hand of the Lord in Mugabe's life cannot be disputed. With all the stress and trauma he encountered in his lifetime for 30years in the hands of colonial masters while fighting freedom wars, sleeping in the bush under unkept conditions forr 30 years, living in fear of death every hour, carrying guns everyday, eating or not eating. Yet Mugabe has been able to elude all his enemies and having life in him for the past 93 years and still going strong in top governmental and international affairs, still taking decisions in his right senses. Summarily put, Nicodemus in the Bible, stated "Rabbi we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no man can do these signs that you do unless God is with him" Jn 3:1-2. Happy Birthday.

Ghana actually needs midterm elections i.e. 2 years into the first term of 4 years or second term of 4 years, Ghana should have midterm elections.
Were that to be the case, rottenness in the governance of this country, would be done away so quickly, Ghana would not find itself in its present state.
The Constitution must be reviewed to accommodate midterm elections to get rid of rottenness in gov't before, such rottenness puts the country over the cliff into the abyss below. That is what Ghana desperately needs, in satisfying the popular maxim, " a stitch in time, saves nine(9)". You don't perpetuate and allow rottenness to fester for so long when it can be dealt with quickly to save the country from collapse. And that is why, governance is regarded as very, very, very serious business. Don't offer yourself to lead, when you don't have any clue, any competence, any intelligence, any focus, any vision and expect you should be allowed to lead the country for 4 years with rottenness.
We need midterm elections pronto.

This runs contrary to Best Practices and Good Governance as being propounded by ECOWAS and championed by UN and AU. The reason being that many of the conflicts in Africa are caused by 'sit-tight' presidents who would use incumbency to manipulate the elections whether or not they were doing well in their positions. So to minimize this occurrence and to avoid the use of unconstitutional means to remove such presidents, a cap of not more than two accumulated terms is placed on all elected presidents and Heads of States. Even with this proposal, some 'never satisfied' presidents are still wont to interpret the term to suit their own greed. For example one tern in Senegal is seven years. Even when the current President Macky Sall tried to reduce a tern from seven years to four years, he was defeated by a combined force within his own party in court, he would not be allowed to curtail the term of the ruling party of the fruit of their labour. KB Asante should knows that all presidents come with a baggage, and the country cannot afford to take the bill of all these hangers on interminably because the president is doing well. He must go so that another set of "parasites" too should help themselves to the goodies of Government. One man no chop.

Elderly senior citizen, thank you very much for your suggestion but it will not work in Ghana. Our lack of progress as a country is that goernments intentionally fail to continue developments initiated by previous governments. Because of the kind of politics we do in this country every government want to start a new development for getting that most of the developments will not be completed within the two terms. Ghana must have a national development plan which will binding on government to follow. NOT parties development plans.

You have to understand this. being President means you are there to do a jab with a mandate for your people and nation,
if you are a crap leader, you cant maintain good projects. If you don't maintain good projects, it means you don't care about your people. IF you dnt care about your people, then you are a stealer. If the projects are good, they will be kept and maintained automatically by the next command. But if you break them and try to score points for fixing them, then you can damn well kiss the presidency Bye Bye.

Respect the term limits, oldman. This is the only way to forestall dictatorship and absolute power. Even Communstt China now observes two five year term for the president. How can we allow the loot going on under one president? Ghana is a Republican constitution and the constitution clearly states: the President shall serve not more than two consecutive terms. Mr. Ashanti, Ghana does not respect dictators and crooks US all as a nation led by our gallant young officers and men dethroned the military dictatorship and swore never to look back. We will resist any attempt to change the term limits. We will use people power never seen before to resist dictatorship in Ghana. Forward ever, backwards never, Young Pioneers mantra. No change to term limits. Ghana abounds in smart and talented individuals to entrust the fortunes of the country to man. We are Ghana, no moo Ashanti ofee archaic. Old age and senility can cloud a person's thinking. This man relishes his days with the Fount of Honour,His Messianic Dedication and Show Boy.He wants his good old days back.

I would like to know if K.B. Asante is smatter than the western world? The reason why long time presidency is not good for leaders and rulers is that when one stays longer in an office, he/she becomes dictatorship.
UNCLE K.B, YOU KNOW EVERY PARTY HAS ITS MANIFESTO WITHIN WHICH THET GOVERN A COUNTRY. SO WHEN A GOOD PRESIDENT IS LEAVING A PARTY AND THEN THE PEOPLE MUST VOTE THE SAME PARTY INTO POWER SO THAT ITS POLICIES WILL CONTINUE.
