NDC women’s organiser blasts Ashittey over Zanetor suit

Dr Zenator Agyeman-Rawlings Dr Zenator Agyeman-Rawlings

The women’s organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken a swipe at the party’s Klottey Korle MP Nii Armah Ashitey, who is contesting the legitimacy of the NDC parliamentary candidate of the constituency Dr Zanetor Rawlings.

Ashittey and one Nii Johnson Coleman have filed a joint suit at an Accra High Court against the Electoral Commission and the NDC. The two are challenging Dr. Rawlings’ legitimacy to contest for a parliamentary seat under the 1992 constitution since her name is not on the electoral roll.

“We recognise the efforts and contributions of the incumbent Member of Parliament towards the NDC and Ghana as a whole. Nevertheless we are of the view that he should accept the results in good faith since the right procedures through which he was elected to represent the party were the same channels through which Dr Zanetor has been duly elected,” Hajia Zaynab Joyce Mahama said in a statement.

She added: “Dr. Zanetor Agyemang Rawlings is the legitimately elected Parliamentary Candidate of the NDC for the Klottey Korle constituency. We also call on all Pro-Women Empowerment NGOs and civil societies not to stay neutral in these times of trials on a fellow female who wants to take the mantle of leadership and deliver a selfless and committed service to her people.”

Below is her full statement:

The Women's Wing of our great Party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) wish to express its displeasure on the calculated efforts by some individuals within the NDC to create disunity in the Klottey Korle Constituency. Dr Zanetor Agyemang Rawlings legitimately won the just ended NDC Parliamentary primaries in November 2015 to represent the party at the Klottey Korle Constituency.

After a comprehensive process of filing nomination, vetting, campaigning and voting, the good people of Klottey Korle have spoken through the ballot box and for that matter their choice should be respected by all well-meaning individuals of the party and all persons who believe in Democracy. People seeking to destroy this young lady by engaging in peripherals should bow down their heads in disappointment and shame. Elections are won at the polling stations and not the law courts. Such individuals trying to engage in trivialities to drown her hard work so far in the constituency should desist from such actions.

We recognise the efforts and contributions of the incumbent Member of Parliament towards the NDC and Ghana as a whole. Nevertheless we are of the view that He should accept the results in good faith since the right procedures through which he was elected to represent the party were the same channels through which Dr Zanetor has been duly elected.

We wish to express our sincere gratitude to the incumbent MP for Klottey Korle Hon. Nii Armah Ashittey who served as Minister for Greater Accra Region and also as Employment minister for his quota of contribution to the party and the country as a whole. The good people of Klottey Korle have spoken and the voice of the people is the Voice of God and should be respected. One should not destroy the party he helped build.

Dr. Zanetor Agyemang Rawlings is the legitimately elected Parliamentary Candidate of the NDC for the Klottey Korle constituency. We also call on all Pro-Women Empowerment NGOs and civil societies not to stay neutral in these times of trials on a fellow female who wants to take the mantle of leadership and deliver a selfless and committed service to her people.

We hereby commend our dear brothers Lawyer Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe and Lawyer Sanja Mahama for standing by our dear comrade throughout these challenging times. We urge them to remain forthright and fight for this just course as we the Women of this great party also pledge our unwavering support behind them.

We thank the good people of Klottey Korle for their unflinching support towards Dr Zanetor Agyemang Rawlings.

We wish to encourage more women to step forward and take the mantle of leadership both within and outside the NDC. Individuals who engage in the sabotage of such strong women with visions and principles should desist from it.
We stand firmly with the President His Excellency John Dramani Mahama's agenda of Changing lives and Transforming Ghana.
Thank you.

Long live the NDC
Long live Ghana
