Knowing so well that the Christian leadership of Ghana has taken a position against the government on GITMO, the last thing the gov should do is approach the Muslim leadership to take the opposite position.
In supporting the gov, the Muslim leadership has opposed the Christians and this is a very bad approach by the gov in soliciting support. Whatever the Christians say from here on against the gov and GITMO will be seen by Muslims in Ghana & elsewhere as anti-Islam. That is the fuel for trouble.
The gov of GH does not seem proactive or forward thinking. I am now getting worried for the future of GH.
I strongly advice the Christians to (from now on) desist from making anymore comments positive or negative about this GITMO issue.

So far everything that has come out of her mouth over the past few days, shows that she has been put into that position to do a hatchet job for the NDC.
At the very least, even if she is not partisan, this woman is not mature enough to hold such a sensitive public position. She should know that the subject of Afari-Djan raise strong emotions in the public domain and for her to overlook those concerns and to go ahead and publicly praise him simply means that she is either looking for trouble or she is not sensible enough to know what she is doing or where she is at.
I do not hold any political sympathies for the NPP but looking at current developments, I have a deep worry about the future of the country.

Mustapha Hamid, a lecturer at the Department of Religion and Human Values of the University of Cape Coast has accused President John Mahama of violating the nation’s laws on anti-terrorism, for hosting two former Guantanamo Bay detainees.
Mr Hamid argued that the President should have asked Parliament to review the anti-terrorism Act 762 before accepting the two.
“…The Antiterrorism Act 762 section 35 states that the Director of Immigration or an officer authorized by the director shall not grant an endorsement or authority to permit a person to enter this country if there is reasonable ground to suspect that the person is, will or has been involved in the commission of a terrorist act. The sovereign laws of Ghana states that people like this cannot come into our country. So if the president was going to bring people like that what he should have done was to seek a repeal or a review of this law to make it possible,” he added.
Two former Guantanamo Bay inmates; Mahmud Umar Muhammad Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammad Salih Al-Dhuby are currently in Ghana as free men at the behest of the US government who had assured that the two pose no security threat to the nation.
Meanwhile the decision has generated massive public outcry despite the assurances.
President John Mahama while interacting with the media called for compassion for the former detainees.
But speaking on the Point Blank segment on Eyewitness News, Mustapha Hamid who wants the detainees repatriated said the action by the President will send Ghana back to authoritarian rule.
“I am calling on all Ghanaians that it is important that we stand up and protect the laws of our country. Once we have opted for democracy…we ought to stick to the rudiments of rule of law otherwise future presidents are going to use compassion as ground to violate Ghana’s laws with impunity and that will send us back to authoritarian rule. Now, today, he violates the antiterrorism Act and goes scot free, tomorrow which other law do we know he is going to violate because of compassion?” Mohammed Hamid questioned.Like

If they want to talk about the commonsense involved, where is the basis for their claim? The Government's position has been amply explained to point out the real commonsense in taking this decision.
So far as the detainees have not been proven to have committed any terrorist act, something the USA would NEVER have let them gotten away with, we can recognize that our admission of them is more commonsensical than the Christian Leaders' bigoted paranoia.
To enumerate a few of the commonsense elements of the Government's position, I would say the following:
1). We are doing a morally upright thing to help two people who should not have been abducted and imprisoned for so long, get their life back;
2). We are fulfilling our Humanitarian commitment that we pledged to the World Community at the UN by offering to accept these innocent folks who by unusual circumstances cannot immediately return to their homeland where Civil War is currently raging on;
3). We are helping a friendly Nation, the USA, out of her difficulty in restoring the Rule of Law she has championed around the World, and accidentally got caught up in her own overreaching to fight terrorism around the World;
4). We would be deepening our diplomatic ties with the USA to guarantee her future aid when we may need her to assist us; and
5). We would be reciprocating all the past help the USA has ever offered us.
Now, where is the commonsense the Christian Leaders claim their position bears?
Just to prevent a potential security hazard the two detainees might pose to our Society?
That is dwelling on sheer assumption. An assumption emanating from FEAR. But the Bible even warns us against being that much afraid. If we therefore let the fear of an assumption hold us back from doing good, how does that become an overriding commonsense?
Surely, we protect our Borders, our Country, from possible, assumed likely dangers coming from outside. We build our defenses militarily to be prepared to defend ourselves when attacked.
But that does not require us to refuse admitting others in who need help, like these former wrongly detained individuals.
The rush with which the Christian Leaders objected to this decision by the Government, they seem to not have cared about all the commonsense factors I enumerated above and more. They spontaneously reacted upon their implicit biases, and subconscious dislike of Muslims.
The Government did not have to seek the Public approval, not even Parliamentary approval, to admit these two well-screened, innocent and wrongly detained Yemenis, who just happen to be Muslims.
But for some reason if this decision has become Public, and the Government has so responsibly offered the true details as it has on these detainees, we should only defer to the Government's own Security Mechanisms to ensure these detainees do not turn to any nefarious acts out of pain and urge for revenge. And even if they would ever resort to vengeance, Ghana is most unlikely to be their target, since she only is offering to help them get their lives and freedom back.

Ok, the Bible does not put limit on love so let's be compassionate to murderers, armed robbers and rapists by not sending them to prison. How many murderers, armed robbers and rapists are you willing to take to your house?
You have to be shallow to compare accident to reality. Do you know the meaning of accident? Do you know the meaning of terrorists? Terrorists kill for a living, that is reality and that is what they do. They carry backpacks and commit mass murder by suicide bombing, they intentionally kill. Mahama in his meet the press said the two guys from Yemen were never convicted of any crimes and they are not dangerous and pose a minimum risk. OK, then why not settle them in one of the 50 states in USA?
Better still, why not send them back to Yemen?
To say that the two Yemenis are less dangerous as compared to the likelihood of getting killed in car accident shows how shallow this President is.

Sheikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu - National Chief Imam
A spokesperson for the National Chief Imam, Sheik Aremeyaw Shaibu has lambasted the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) for their stiff position against the housing of two Guantanamo ex-detainees in Ghana.
He described the council as “Xenophobic” – and questioned the Christianity in them – “Why can’t they show love to our Muslim brothers?”
Three major Christian groups — the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference (GCGC), the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) and the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) - have asked the government to demonstrate that it is a listening one by sending the two former Guantanamo Bay prisoners back to where they came from.
The John Mahama-led administration brokered a deal with the Obama government to house in Ghana, two ex-detainees from the dreaded Guantanamo Bay military facility over a period of two years.
The three bodies have expressed worry over the pact which has been shrouded in secrecy - “The whole process lacks transparency,” the CCG pointed out in a statement.
“We are of the strongest view that, the inadequate public consultation and broader consensus building by government is exposing our nation and the entire sub-region to terrorist attack, and must be reversed,” the Council noted.
But speaking on NEAT FM’s morning show dubbed Ghana Montie, Sheik Aremeyaw Shaibu said he sides with the president on the position he has taken relating to this matter.
"The impression is being created that...they are of a certain brand. But they have not been accused...the president has been clear and succinct on this matter, and yet we've this kind of reaction...and that is what pains my heart....They're human beings; they've a right to life...they've a right to human dignity, they need a place to put their lives together...i agree with the president on the position he has taken," he indicated.
He pointed out that the Islamic fraternity is well pleased that the two ex-detainees are in Ghana reiterating that they are not terrorists as claimed.
“Even if they [Detainees] were to be Christians, we [Muslims] would accept them here, so why can’t the Christians? I will urge all Christians to rather welcome these detainees. They are not terrorists,” he noted.

Who told you they are innocent? They have killed many innocent people in Afghanistan, Iraq and other places.
These people were not picked on the streets of Afghanistan or Iraq. These people were arrested at terrorists camps. One of the two was at the same terrorists camp where three of the terrorists of the 9-11 attack on New York were trained.
Those who were picked by mistake were released to their countries and compensated. One such people was paid one million dollars so if these two were innocent, how much compensation did they receive?
How come Yemen refused to accept them after Yemen had accepted 12 other Yemenis from Guantanamo Bay?
Ok, the Bible does not put limit on love so let's be compassionate to murderers, armed robbers and rapists by not sending them to prison. How many murderers, armed robbers and rapists are you willing to take to your house?
You have to be shallow to compare accident to reality. Do you know the meaning of accident? Do you know the meaning of terrorists? Terrorists kill for a living, that is reality and that is what they do. They carry backpacks and commit mass murder by suicide bombing, they intentionally kill. Accident on the other hand is not an intentional choice and anybody who compares the two is shallow.
Even the Bible tells us to love our neighbors like ourselves but not love our neighbors more than ourselves.
Mahama in his meet the press said the two guys from Yemen were never convicted of any crimes and they are not dangerous and pose a minimum risk. OK, then why not settle them in one of the 50 states in USA?
Better still, why not send them back to Yemen?
To say that the two Yemenis are less dangerous as compared to the likelihood of getting killed in car accident shows how shallow this President is.
