‘Mahama erred in disclosing location of ex-Gitmo detainees’

Security analyst David Agbee has criticised President John Mahama for disclosing the location of the former Guantanamo detainees in Ghana.

According to him, the move could jeopardize the security arrangement put in place to ensure effective surveillance of the detainees.

President John Mahama Tuesday told the media at the Flagstaff House that the two- Mahmoud Omar Mohammed Bin Atef,36, and Khalid Shayk Mohammed, 34 – are sharing the same premises with Ghana’s national security officials.

Reacting to the comments, Mr. Agbee said revealing the conditions under which the detainees live in Ghana is a major breach of security.

“I also think it is not a good thing that the President revealed that those people are in same place with a state institution, security wise he shouldn’t have communicated it to the whole country that those people are kept over there,” he said.

He added that the President exhibited some lack of understanding of Ghana’s foreign policy in his responses to the media.

“ My knowledge of Ghana’s foreign policy as far back as 1957 tells me that Ghana is non- aligned; we do not align ourselves with the East or the West so if the President comes out to say that we are aligned with the US, then he got his foreign policy wrong”.
