  Paa Joe, you make an excellent point about innovation, science and technology. These are at the centre of our thinking as we launch a long-term master-planning of the zone. A team is being set up to address this issue, including ways to bring about science and technology parks; agro-parks and industrial parks in the zone - generally a cluster approach to transformation - as well as skill training.
  
  However, these initiatives will hit a snag on the financing front. we simply do not have the structure of financing available in the country for long-term investments and investments to scale.
  
  Given the accumulated disadvantages of the zone - poor infrastructure, remoteness, skills shortage, overall shortage of capital (only 16% of savings mobilised in the zone are reinvested in it), a vehicle is needed to source an "echo system of finance" - from a variety of sources to address different levels of need and need simultaneously in order to reduce risks. This why we are floating the idea of a different financing vehicle alongside the planning for innovation. It is not one or the other, but both.

  With about 30 banks operating in the country, what will be the use of another bank. Forget that it will be a bank to be use for development. That will only exist in name but not in operation.

  Boss (if that is your name). there are 17 Commercial Banks operating in the SADA Zone. Of the savings they mobilise in the zone less than 20% is actually spent in the area in the form of loans and advances for business and person need. Even when they lend, the loans tend to be short-term oriented at very high interest rates. These types of loans (including those from microfinance) may be useful for meeting operating costs. But they are not suitable for investments that require a long term to make returns and certainly not for infrastructure and capital expenditures. Yet these are the types of investments that are necessary to turn the economy of the zone around.
  
  What we are proposing is NOT another Commercial Bank but one which mobilises resources from a variety of sources and can lend over the medium-long term. Traditionally, these are called "Development finance institution" of which Development Bank is an example. Without long-term and "patient capital" we cannot take advantages of the business and investment opportunities in that zone and are therefore undermining the development of our country. That is why we have to think creatively with a nationalistic and patriotic outlook.

  I really wonder if these our northern bros who are at the whelm of affairs in SADA know what it takes to attract the needed funds from the donor community.
  First of all, SADA till date has not been able to prosecute a single person or company who were indicted in the scandalous dissipation of the first trunch of money that were embezzled in the name of Guinea fowl production and tree planting. How then does the current SADA executives expect the funding agencies to pour their tax payers money into a basket that has been leaking? What concerted effort has the new board of SADA put in place to get the past leadership under Alhassan Andani,Gilbert Iddi and Charles Jebuni account for their stewardship? Failure to deal with this serious issue only sends one distressing signal to all concerned that SADA and for that Matter John Mahama is not committed to fighting corruption.
  Secondly the writing is clearly on the wall for all to see that ndc intends to use SADA as a conduit to buy votes for 2016.All monies that would go to SADA will end up in the ndc campaign. .
  Northerners must open their eyes and should not allow the John Mahama family and their cronies to abuse us by pretending to develop the north only to end up enriching themselves.

  Mr Abu Iddrissu. First be assured that we are addressing the issues that were raised in the 2013 audit report - what you refer to as resources that were looted. Secondly also be assured that we are quickly re-establishing our relationship with development partners in a fruitful way. We are taking steps to strengthen the institution and if you want further information about how we are doing that you can visit the SADA website, www.sadagh.org. Finally, it is important not to always be cynical or read partisan politics into everything. This attitude destroys our country, makes us lazy in terms of thinking creatively, because afterall, some political party or the other can always be blamed. Since I became CEO, I have not experienced any attempt by the NDC or any other party to impose on SADA. My experience is that the NDC and other parties recognise the independent, non-partisan and autonomous nature of SADA. I will suggest that you start to revise your views also.
