You know what you meant when you said 'ordinary'. But given the hostility of the media who will latch onto every word of yours that could be ambiguous to misrepresent what you say, you should have been more careful.

Stop putting your foot in it.

Yet, there is a way to rectify this but i guess you will wait until the president comes out to advise you to do so.

How about putting out a statement of apology to the workers and also state that you were taken out of contest?

Why not ask the president to move you elsewhere?

I am not saying the press will leave you alone, as they want their pound of flesh, but you will be less vulnerable to their attacks. A bit like getting an armoured car rather than a toyota land cruiser.

He could have describe those workers as regular staff and not ordinary. We don't have ordinary worker but a regular worker. Regular collocate with worker or staff, which sits well. But ordinary worker or staff will read meanings into it.
We can also say common staff. Common can collocate with staff.
