African Standby Force starts first military exercises

The African Union has been involved in other peacekeeping missions and has 22,000 troops in Somalia.

Members of the African Union's new 25,000-strong multinational standby force are gathering to begin field training for the first time.

The exercises in South Africa aim to make sure the force is ready by January to respond to crises across the continent.

The force will be made up of five brigades from Africa's economic blocs.
It is being set up to avoid reliance on the outside world in peacekeeping across the continent.

The logistical base for the African Standby Force (ASF) will be in Douala in Cameroon following a deal signed last week.

The training begins at the South African Army Combat Training Centre in Lohatla with an opening ceremony on Monday.

On Tuesday, 5,000 officers from the military and police officer will be in the field where the ASF will have to intervene in a fictitious country.

The operation, which continues until 5 November, is intended help evaluate how ready the force is to respond to crises and monitor peacekeeping missions.

The exercise was meant to be carried out in Lesotho in 2014 but was delayed because of security issues in the country.

One of the reasons the ASF was established was so African countries did not need to rely on countries outside Africa for conflict resolution.

But BBC Monitoring's Africa security correspondent Tomi Oladipo says the AU will have to ask donors for money as it said in May that it needs $1bn (£700m) to make the force operational.

There are also challenges relating to poor co-ordination and the lack of political will among member states, he says.

The African Union (AU) has become much more willing to intervene in countries over the 15 years, Hallelujah Lulie, an Ethiopian-based researcher for the Institute of Security Studies, told the BBC's Newsday Programme.

Once the force was set up, it would be able go into an AU member country uninvited in cases of genocide, crimes against humanity or war crimes, he said.

Citizens should be able to criticise the media, even challenge media practices, without losing their jobs.

The media campaign aimed at influencing the president to relieve Stan of his duties will not work. The media cannot and should not be untouchable.

Like others, the media is fallible and Ghanaians will call them to order without fear.
Stan Dogbe will stay whether the media likes it or not.

It is unethical for the media to use their power to reach out to Ghanaians to attack others in order to settle personal scores.

If we want to maintain press freedom, the media itself must stop waging wars on individuals unfairly else we risk reprisals.

What we as citizens must ask ourselves is : Is this the type of administration we want or fight to retain or offer them a second chance ? Are we dumb or brainless as a nation and how long can we stay dumb ?

We have heard calls to the President to sack almost everyone in his government.

Like public servants, people in government are also serving the nation. We cannot settle our differences with government functionaries by asking the President to sack them.

And we resort into playing infantile psychology by daring the President.
The media publishes rubbish such as; Stan Dogbe knows too much about the President that he cannot be sacked.

The president is too intelligent to fall for baits like that.

We should be allowed to criticise the media.

I remember Hon Mark Woyongo's perfectly legitimate comment about violence begetting violence and the call by the media for him to be sacked.

Yet, the only persons asking the President to sack the corrupt judges is the Tiger Eye Pi team whiles the rest of the media fraternity, including the vociferous Professor Audrey Gadzekpo, is deluging us with deafening silence on the matter.

The media is not a place for settling personal scores.

No doubt, he is good but he is not using and directing this youthful exuberance in a proper way that will bring adequate benefit and opportunity to the NDC. I believe, he lacks guidance and control and these are the bane of his misfit behaviour. Instead of firing him, I believe he should rather be moved to either the Agric sector to assist Fifi Kwettey, or the Roads and Highways ministry to assist Davi Aku Dziva Attivor. This boy has the energy but lacks control and direction.

If it is behavouir think about your own behavouir in your offices of work. You must learn to remove the mould from your own eyes first. This man has a home to run like you. Is it just that easy to get rid of somebody's bread just because you are not happy with his behaviour? After all you are not his employer. If his employer thinks he is not performing his duty then he can fire him but not you.

No one should force the president to do their wish. He knows what to do for the nation and in the interest of all Ghanaians as mandated to do by the good peoples who voted for him and his party.
