In certain industries Saturdays are deemed as "pay earning" days but not working days. That equates to 52 days per year. Redundancy is set at one month per year..another 27 days. Holiday pay is a minimum of 17 days. So far that is 96 days paid for each year without any production. Add in sick leave and medical bills for spouse and up to six children and you can start to see that this is basically unaffordable. Some companies may be abusing the system but others are perhaps doing it for survival..and if they were to go bust that doesn't help the worker at the end of the day.
