With every politically represented hamlet calling and insisting on having a tertiary institution, some are meant to offer attractive but a closer look meaningless courses. Environmental health agents/practitioners and scientists abound among the rank and file of the MOH. In fact many medical doctors choose this for postgraduate studies!
Which market did the government have in mind when it dedicated a whole university to environmental or allied sciences? We need to be realistic and rational in our educational planning. Of course political inclinations and passion sway decisions but technocrats need to be objective and exhibit a small amount of professionalism when nodding their heads to the barking of politicians.

The issue about SoH graduates unemployment is a development some of us feel should not be toyed with neither should it be politicized.
It is very sad to note from a number of comments passed on this publication that there are little or no placement in the job market for Environmental Health Trainees.
Some of us see Environmental Health Services as services which are more focused on addressing social problems; precisely, sanitation and health targeted at achieving public good.
I am not surprised about the perception most people have regarding the sine qua non to train and absorb Environmental Health professionals to assist in addressing the aforementioned social problems. Such perceptions are what in my opinion is translating into poor sanitation with its concomitant outbreaks of diseases and Economic loses to the our country Ghana.
Environmental Health services are rendered all over the world and therefore should not be seen in Ghana as non-essential service; for no one disputes the fact that sanitation is a public good and a major determinant of our standard of living.
I therefore passionately entreat all especially the journalists to join the crusade to persuade the government to recruit these brothers and sister who in a way had fallen victim of this circumstances.
Thanks.

I say that the need for these officers does exist. Just look at the very unhygyienic environment around the cities and in fact the whole country. The fact remains that their certifications make them as law enforcement officers and so only the government can employ them at national, regional, municipal and district levels. They haven't been trained for the private sector although their services and espertise could be used by them as well. The fact also remains that the government can only employ this many of employees but certainly not everybody. I am certified Public Health Inspector, and hold a Masters degree in Public Health but I am not employed by the Canadian government as a health inspector. Although I am employed in the health field, I am using my other degrees to work. Ocassionally though I fall back on my public health knowledge, skills and abilities to solve some problems in my current job. These youth need to diversify!

I'm surprise by the kind of comments some people are posting.people just read articles and make funny comments anyhow.well school of hygiene isn't a private institution,it is a public institution created by the government, being trained by the ministry of health and have to be posted by the local government ministry so we shouldn't wait for a promise from the local government because it is their duty to post us.we could have joined other sectors but can all of the youth in Ghana be police officers or other security services only?no,we chose to service Ghana by being environmental officers and this is our reward, well you wouldn't know how it feels like so I don't blame those passing comments on what they have no idea of.ignorance
