Child prostitution rampant in Ho

The Volta Regional Coordinator of Victory Bible Church Reverend David Eleblu has said child prostitution was gaining grounds in Ho, Volta Regional capital.

He said though the practice was not openly known, it was a reality, which needed the collaboration of stakeholders to address.

Rev. Eleblu made the observation to the GNA when the Church feted over 600 street children, widowers and widows in Ho to climax its Easter Convention.

He said the situation was getting out of hand and called on churches and other non-governmental organisations to work together to curbing the practice.

“Some of these girls are getting pregnant and we need to offer them help now,” Rev. Eleblu said.

He said girls aged 12, 13 and 14 linger around drinking bars and ghettos at the central lorry terminal and offer themselves for money and that five of such girls and other homeless young people were being housed in his church and given skills and education.

Rev. Eleblu therefore urged churches to get to the ghettos and drinking bars around the central market and take young people off the streets.

At a public forum recently Madam Commend Akpelo, the Volta Regional Chairperson of the Coalition of NGOs in Health, also noted that it appeared some children were into prostitution in the Regional capital.

Speaking at the same forum, Dr. Atsu Seake-Kwawu, Ho Municipal Director of Health Services, appealed to NGOs working in the health sector to “do some field work” and come out with solutions to address child prostitution.

He said the presence of young girls at road junctions, drinking bars and in obscure areas late in the night was questionable and urged stakeholders to act quickly.

Dr. Seake-Kwawu said, “It is bad when you drive round town at night and see these girls in short dresses all over in obscure places.”

He said the situation accounted for many adolescents getting pregnant in the Municipality.

Dr. Seake-Kwawu said it was not surprising that between 13 and 20 per cent of pregnant women were girls in the Municipal area last two years.

He said only 1.7 per cent of adolescents in the Municipality accepted family planning in 2011 and called for “empowerment” of girls to curb teenage pregnancies and preventable diseases.

Dr Seake-Kwawu appealed to churches to establish youth friendly centres where young people could use their energies wisely.

I know border regions have problem with women and little girls been lured into prostitution for easy money, but the number one region with this problem is Volta region.In the evening girls and women from whole villages and towns cross border into Togo for the purpose of this nefarious activity.It is not a new thing.This has been going on for ages now.French sex tourist usually get them to do anything they want and usually record it too.We need to stop pretending and finger pointing in the wrong direction and deal with it.

HIV/AIDS prevalence rate high in urban areas – Survey

A new survey conducted by the Ghana AIDS Control Programme reveals urban areas in the country have the highest prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS.

This was made known at a programme held for journalists and other interest groups ahead of the publication of the 2013 surveillance results of the national HIV/AIDS prevalence rates.

It is estimated that about 1.85 percent of Ghana’s population is infected with the disease.

The disease is most prevalent in Eastern and Volta regions of the country with the Northern regions recording the lowest, according to the survey.

A total of 14,000 people died from HIV/AIDS in 2012 while 12,073 new infections were recorded in the same year.

However, the acting Programme Manager for the National AIDS Control programme, Dr. Stephen Ayisi Addo, has said analysis of Ghana’s prevalence rate shows an increase in prevalence rate in urban areas.

He attributed the increase in HIVAIDS prevalence to high levels of social interaction, population growth, biological factors among others.

“HIV follows roots of commerce, places where there is intense commercial activity”, he said, adding that sex workers are also a contributing factor to HIV/AIDS prevalence.

However, an estimated HIV prevalence rate presented by the National AIDs and Sexually STI [Sexually Transmitted Infection] control programme revealed that there has been a decline in prevalence rate from 1.85 percent to 1.3 percent in 2013.

To be very honest with you,Yen Nana Otumfo the Asantehene has done the very best he can, to support children's from poor family background or whose parent's can't afford to send their girlschild to school and not only girls to enrol @ Otumfo Educational Trust fund Schemes.So from my point of view, is very hard to see under age girls in Kumama in this business. As such, this girls you see within our top cosmopolitan city are entirely foreigners mainly from Togo, Nigeria and they are not under age.

Besides, she and the intelligence service had asked the military personnel and the white guy "William" to deliberately keep slamming the doors at the home to ensure that I am being deprived of sleep knowing I have to be up latest by 5:20 am and leave for work. This is how evil the landlady, the roommates and the intelligence service have engaged in since the landlady came for the money last night. Go and see how Prez Mahama of Ghana has transformed Gonjaland with Ghana money just within the two and half years that he has been in power. Every town, village and hamlet in Gonjaland has received a facelift with new facilities such as roads, toilet facilities, markets, mosques, good quality water projects, electricity extension projects, etc. The question is did J. J. Rawlings do the same thing to Voltarians when he was in power for twenty years? What about Atta Mills. The good old Prof was in power for three and a half years yet he was not selfish to only concentrate on his people in Ekumfi Etuam and the central Region but rather his whole thought was for the general good. No wonder under the care of Prez Mills, Ghana achieved a growth rate of 11%, single digit inflation and the smooth implementation of the Single Spine Pay Policy where newly recruited police personnel received the nominal equivalent of 500dollars as monthly salary. Compare these achievements to the nepotism and selfish policies of the Mahama government that has crippled the Ghanaian economy. I really weep for Ewes and Fantis whose votes brought Mahama to power and yet are the hardest hit by the current hardship prevailing in the country.
