Ghana would be extremely unusual if the majority of its PMs are NOT political!

And, you know what? This is not unusual. Indeed, it is a reality that the entire world's countries have to deal with.

The fact that so many PMs made ninnies of themselves by wailing about why they weren't brought in on the process--when they actually VOTED on the process--is a clear indication of Ghana's PMs being politicians...either that or they are so ignorant and have such poor memories they should not be in office.

We don't have enough information about the nature of this vaccine, the procedures of conducting this trial and the dangers, if any involved. It's only with this information that parliamentarians can take an informed decision whether or not to allow it.

Hmm, amazing bunch we are indeed! On the other hand our Obroni conscience mentality is killing us stupid. If someone should repackage this same Ebola preventive Vaccine and label it as coming from Any of the western countries or even China, then they will amicably accept it wholeheartedly without questions asked.

However, the vaccine is partly developed by some student of the University of Allied and Health Sciences, so it's not trustworthy a product for Ghanaian souls. Yet, they are ever ready to swig fake medicines happily from China every now and then with little or no bother whatsoever.

Should a deadly outbreak of a sort occurred and this same Health Ministry were unable to help out, then the same scaremongers will be busily at work again chastising the government of the day plus the Minister of Health for not doing enough to salvage the situation. How sad!

Here's one reason why you should WANT vaccine trials in Ghana: because right next door is Sierra Leone which is pouring out Ebola cases even as we speak.

Who are you going to turn to when/if Ebola comes to your doorstep? Are you going to go crawling to Western-constructed and staffed Ebola Treatment Units?

Vaccines are the surest way to ensure this Ebola outbreak is stopped. If you don't support vaccine trials, you should be prepared to take responsibility for the repercusionss.

So if you are against the vaccine trial, talk to your PM and ask him/her to explain to you their vote on the issue. Also ask them to explain the law to you...better yet, obtain a copy of the regulations yourself so you can be sure of what the regulations are.

What happens to you and your family when/if Ebola moves from Sierra Leone (Ghana's neighboring country) to Ghana? Who will be there to help you and your loved ones then?

Suspicion and Mistrust of Vaccines

Suspicion and apprehension about vaccination is fairly common, particularly among several specific disenfranchised communities in the United States and internationally. For these communities, the suspicion is best understood in a social and historical context of inequality and mistrust. For example, several studies have found that the legacy of racism in medicine and the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, a clinical trial conducted with African Americans who were denied appropriate treatment opportunities, are key factors underlying African Americans’ distrust of medical and public health interventions, including vaccination.[13], [14], [15], [16]

Internationally, in parts of Asia and Africa, mistrust of vaccines is often tied to “Western plot” theories, which suggest that vaccines are ploys to sterilize or infect non-Western communities.[17] Suspicion has existed for different infections and vaccines over the past 20 years. For example, in Cameroon in 1990, rumors and fears that public health officials were administering a range of childhood vaccines to sterilize women thwarted the country’s immunization efforts.[18] Similarly, in Tanzania in the mid 1990s, a missionary raised concerns about tetanus immunizations, sparking sterilization rumors and halting the campaign.[17] And in 2005, measles vaccine suspicions led to decreased vaccination rates and increased infections in Nigeria.[19]

One of the most striking instances of vaccine suspicion in Africa has concerned the polio vaccine. In 1999, British journalist Edward Hooper wrote The River: A Journey to the Source of HIV/AIDS. He speculated that the virus that causes AIDS transitioned from monkeys to humans via a polio vaccine. He argued that the polio vaccine was made from the cells of chimpanzees infected with the primate form of HIV (Simian immunodeficiency virus, or SIV), which adapted in humans and caused disease; and that there were coincidences in the sites where the polio vaccine was first administered and where the first cases of HIV originated.[20] Although scientists and medical scholars have provided plentiful evidence to discount Hooper’s ideas, media attention has sparked conspiracy theories and concerns globally.[21]

Religious objections by Muslim fundamentalists have driven suspicions about the polio vaccine in three different countries in which polio is still endemic: Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria. For example, the local Taliban in Southern Afghanistan have called polio vaccination an American ploy to sterilize Muslim populations and an attempt to avert Allah’s will. Resistance to vaccination has even resulted in violent beatings and kidnappings.[22] Similar objections halted polio vaccination campaigns in Nigeria. In 2003, religious leaders in three different Nigerian states claimed that the vaccines were contaminated with the virus that causes AIDS and sterilization and cancer-causing agents, despite tests confirming the vaccine’s safety. The standoff was eventually resolved through dialogue among religious and political leaders, WHO, and UNICEF.[23]

Divergent cultural perspectives and opinions toward vaccination, including libertarian and religious objections, as well as vaccine suspicions, signal the need for continued communication and collaboration between medical and public health officials and the public regarding acceptable and effective immunization policies.

What the learned men are not understanding is that, the choice of Volta Region was absolutely wrong. VR and Ashanti cannot be chosen for such a globally sensitive trial at this time of confused democracy in Ghana where fools are at the helm of affairs. Much as I don't know the technicalities of the program, Ebola is not like malaria trial, hepatitis B, pneumonia etc. it is a CNN and BBC disease. Any other location except VR and Ashanti would not have raised any serious issue. We need to blend the proffessorism, doctorism, directorism into the reality of the environment. Hope I have contributed something.

Prof. Kwadwo Koram is just telling lies. They should tell Ghanaians who gave he and his friend Prof. Binka the authority to convass on behalf of Ghana for the clinical trialsto be conducted in Ghana. These are the facts. Prof. Fred. Binka, Prof Kwadwo Koram and a british Prof. Brian Greenwood went and asked for the trials to be conducted in Ghana without the consent of any authority. Prof. Binka and Prof. Koram have become agents of some countries and some big Pharmaceutical Firms to use Ghana in conducting all sorts of clinical trials in Ghana.Using Ghanaians as guinea pigs. Their Godfather is Prof. Brian Greenwood of the London School of tropical Medicine who is behind these criminal acts. Prof. Koram should just shut up. He and Binka are just Epidemiologist and not Virologist or Immunologist to conduct trials on Ebola. What do they know about the science, the microbioloy, the immunology of Ebola to run clinical trials on Ebola. The trials should not just be stopped but the whole issue of how this trials found its way to Ghana should be investigated and the CRIMINALS involve should be prosecuted. Ebola has to do with our national security and cannot be compared to any trials on Malaria or Hepatitis. Prof. Korams lack of knowledge in clinical trials was exposed at the last meeting held with the FDA, Ghana Academy of Sciences and so on. The man did not even know the importants of EFFICACY in Phase II clinical trials.

2. I am sure may be he has never seen confirmed Ebola Virus Disease patient before and that is why he is agitating for the trial in Ghana.
