Tells you how Ghanaians do things. You build first and then get permit later. What about if the permit is rejected after you've finished the construction? But that is the way things are done in Ghana - BACKWARD.

According to that dumb Mayor of Accra, over 60% of buildings in Accra proper, are not covered by building permits.
The truth of the matter is that building permits have become an obsolete nuisance, as District Assemblies themselves have no means or proper logistics of evaluating or inspecting developments, much more issuing out these building permits.
Even if there was, they wouldnt encourage the process because as the situation stands, workers - from the very top to the lowest of District Assemblies are free to go out to any of the over 60% of buildings without a permit and demand bribes at any time of the day, month and year to support their terribly bad salaries.
The system is cleverly crafted in such a way that it has been made almost impossible to get a building permit. That being the case, most developers just simply give up trying.
The infinitely daft govt we have in power should just quietly stop the demolitions. The only palpable reason they are going ahead with it is because, they think it will appease the less informed members of society and make them think that they the govt are trying to do something about the tragedy that occurred a few days ago.
Breaking down existing buildings is a no-win, lose-lose mad option. In fact it a classic Rawlings by-heart option. What we are faced with is a much much more serious problem than what the chooboi and lynch mob mentality can achieve.
The entire Local Govt set-up in this country needs to be re-evaluated, reorganized and renovated from top to bottom to suit the demands of a rapidly growing urbanized population and modern private infrastructural development. The capitalist system that we have been forcibly arm-twisted to adopt since the sixties can never resolve the societal short-comings of a developing society. This leaves room for massive corruption to seep in, in the bid by the poor and disadvantaged to merely survive.
The City Engineers Dept of the Accra 'Metroplitan' Assembly at James Town, for instance, is a sorry pathetic joke. The entire place looks like a disused bomb shelter from the 2nd World War. You can see and feel incompetence, a lack of concern and hostile apathy in the demeanor of each and every member of staff you encounter. They look at you and treat you like an uninvited guest who has gate-crashed into their peaceful domain. Customer Service? From the where?

Brothers and Sisters nobody should follow the commands of the frustrated President (Mahama) to demolish pieople's property. This demolition exercises cannot solve the problem of Accra from being flooded and water logged. Those who have started pulling down and destroying people's buildings are those who actually have nothing to do with their hands. The President cannot dodge the blow of his negligencies by attributing the city's flood to the structures mounted on the waterways. It is very pathetic that President always making the situation unbearable for the people who voted him into power. It was only yesterday people cried bitterly for the lost of their loved ones and today people are also weeping for their houses being demolished by the command of President Mahama adding more injuries. Mr President at the occurrence of an incident like don't take a hasty decision but rather sit down and plan with your right people as to how best you can solve the problem. There are so many ways you can solve this flooding problems .The city needs more gutters and modern drainage systems to re channel the course of these running waters.
