I am apprehensive about this seeming progress in African democracy. When the NDC wanted a 3-year SSS, all they had to do was to set up a committee of NDC friendly idiots to look into the 4-year system that was recommended by the Committee of vice chancellors and UTAG. John Mahama, then Vice Presdident, told the committee on innauguration that he, personally, preferred 3 years. They did the same when they wanted other constitutional changes that would further prevent prosecution of murderers like Jerry Rawlings. So, suppose Gyassingbe of Togo decides to change a presidential term to 50 years. He would still have ruled for hundred years and this would still have been constitutional. The AU should step it up further if they want to make any sense to its people and the rest of the world.

Greedy bastards. They think the countries they rule are their personal properties. Those leaders who prevent term-limits to take place should be removed by popular revolts of the very same people who put them there.

I think, if a leader has got a vision and doing well in the country they should have no limit to the amount of time a leader is allow to lead a country. In the UK ,if a prime minister is voted by the people he could be prime minister for many many years. America has a system of voted leaders into power only twice, the good news of America is if the person is in power twice or not, they work as a team towards the country. Any good projects and ideas are not abandoned by the successor. African leaders play politics in a dangerous way. If you give only two terms and a good leader comes into power, I think the two terms are not long enough to change things around. The moment the good leader's terms are over the evil new leader does not carry on the good ideas of his predecessor . Look at what is happening in Ghana now. Politicians playing evil and dirty politics . Politicians killing other politicians by pouring acid on their fellow politicians. My people, if you have come into power in the interest of the nation and bring a change into the nation why are you killing your fellow politicians? If a leader is not doing well wait till the masses vote the person out of power. Ghanaian politicians why are you killing one another? Please, leaders in Africa try and bring a change in the countries and in the nations rather than killing your fellow human beings. Do you guys have a conscience ? Do you know God Almighty created human being in His own image? You do not have the authority to destroy anybody's life. You have poverty, crime, armed robbery, teenage pregnancy , mentally ill patients roaming on the street to care for. Disabled people have nothing to eat roaming on the street of Ghana. You should ensure if possible they are given shelter accommodation and cared for. Free education is only in the north, other regions parents can not educate their children so the free education should be put across the whole Ghana . Free NHS for the health of all people to be improved. Ensure law is put across the whole country by giving child benefits to people who have three children in the society this will stop irresponsible parents who give birth to ten children, and are rather producing armed robbers in the society. Politicians in Ghana you are killing other rival politicians, stupid lot, who is going to care for the children they have left behind? Why are you creating widows and orphans in the name of politics. I cry to the living God every day for the God Almighty to give wisdom to Africa and Ghana leaders, leaders should agree to disagree and work as a team to bring the nations into good speed, please stop the killings and come together and work together to protect Africa and Ghana .

Grace, you made very good points. The difference is that in the UK and US, it is almost impossible to rig elections and/or make senseless coups as we see in African countries. What this means is that, the voices of the people do not always reflect who leads. African politicians get into power (by any means), suspend or change their constitutions (Jerry Rawlings alone suspended Ghana's constitution twice). This is impossible in the US. So, let's define term limits as a way of constitutionally kicking out the dumb ones among them. They will always be welcome as advisors to their successors.

I have always said, and will continue to argue, that democracy, as it practiced in US, Britain and other advanced countries, is not good for Africa. We are not ripe for democracy!..Period..If Kwame Nkrumah had listened to critics, for the sake of democracy, the Akosombo Dam would not have been built...there would not have been free education because the opposition party said it was not necessary...it was Nkrumah who built the city of Tema and the harbour...Universities of Cape Coast and Tech were built by Nkrumah...most of the secondary schools and training colleges in Ghana were built by Nkrumah...hotels and industries, (GIHOC,) were all built by him despite being labelled a dictator by his opponents-Danquah-Busiah to the present NPP...look at China..the rate at which they are progressing and advancing is astonishing...there is no democracy there but they are doing well and the prediction is that China may surpass the U.S. very soon...illiteracy and poverty in Africa cannot produce democracy...we dont understand issues...party politics in Africa is personal and tribalistic..we dont even understand freedom of speech and that's why people say "all kinda shit" on the airwaves in Ghana... what we need in Africa is mild dictatorship and one party rule with unlimited term limits
Ghanaians are suffering and we need NDC out
The longer they rule the more money they steal.
