I think he can do the job, but then does he have the courage to withstand the tremendous pressures that would come to bear from the political establishments on whoever sits in the EC chair? It is one thing being the back office assistant with all the leisure in the world engaging in hypothesis and what-ifs, and another thing sitting in the hot seat with all the big guns after you.

I have known Emmanuel as a genteel pal, even back in the days at Legon when we were both in the same program doing political science. Those were the days of Kwame Ninsin, Kofi Drah, Folson, Manu etc. Kwesi Jonah was our teaching assistant then. Back then Emmanuel and I will often strike conversations on topical political issues right after the N2 lecture halls and he often towed leftist or progressive lines whereas I towed the conservative line.

On balance I think he is an accomplished guy who can do the job. He will thrive in an environment where there are very strong democratic institutions in place to protect limb and life......but in our corrupt Ghana, I am afraid for him, he will be dragged into the mud.

Without taking anything away from Emmanuel, I would rather want to see an accomplished constitutional judge in the EC chair. Part of the drawbacks of Afari-Gyan was, he was block headed son-of-gun political hack who, because he had no background as a lawyer or judge, developed this ultra ego arrogance to cover for his inadequacies. The arrogance reaped nothing but massive financial losses for the state.

As a highly respected member of the Commonwealth Eminent Persons group he stood tall in helping to advance democracy and good governance in various commonwealth countries.
Like Kofi Annan, his respect transcends our borders.
We should rather celebrate people like Dr. Akwetey to help move our dear country forward.

The problem is how you allow those political views impair your judgement and how you do your job. It's alright to go against your own if you do what is right.
