Then also there are doctors who focus more on their private practices to the detriment of their employers.

After all, as a medical personnel one dont need no medical history to save a life. A case presented such as this you do a physical assessment, monitor V/S, blood pressure, blood sugar as some of the measures. If it is true that she has undergone previous surgical procedures during deliveries one could have found a scare on her abdomen to ascertain that. Ghanaian doctors and nurses are incompetent as well as arrogant. This doctors behave like they gods that need to be worshipped. And for the nurses the way and manner that they treat their papents is very appalling. It's in Ghana where nurses slap, curses, demean, laugh, and insult their parents because there are no law suit toward such blatant abuses and no patients right hence the continuous abuses of them. Ghana doctors and their nurses do not practice the laws of Florence Nightingale on how to treat their patients with respect and dignity period.

This case is an interesting one for me because of my background in medico-legal law. This is a medical superintendent of a District Health Facility talking like a lay man.A classical case of square peg in a round hold typical of Ghana Health Service. You don't always need history from a patient to establish a diagnosis.A simple examination would have revealed a surgical scar indicating previous caesarian section(s). Some of us are taking his words with a pinch of salt except he will be the first to admit he is suffering a form of visual impairment. This is a mark of lousy practitioner who is not just careless but incompetent. Was Dr Preprah conducting trial of labour for somebody with 3 previous c/s when uterine rupture is almost certain.People are already pointing to his flaws as a distinct contributor to Maternal Mortality supposed to be priority area for Ghana Health Service.I have very little respect for Health Services in this Country but the hierarchy of the Country's Health Service should be squarely blamed. When you have factors like bribery, favoritism, nepotism, cronyism, sycophancy, boot licking at Ghana Health Service headquarters informing postings of doctors then problems like these are expected.Truth said the GHS is more of private business entity than a public organization with festering corruption and ill practices.people at the helm of affairs are teaching young doctors how to make illegal quick money at the expense of patients because they condone and connive such practices. You can only flourish if you were part of the corruption machinery but will be made an instant scapegoat if you insist on the right thing in line with professional ethics.I am saying this with authority regarding the extent to which the GHS go to defend serious flaws of this sort most at time under cover.Blame not the young doctor anyway but the top men in Ghana Health Service.

The Doctor's explanation is not satisfactory. It's only a cover up of his incompetent and negligent staff. The MOH should investigate the matter and sanction those found responsible.

Dear useless and worthless. I really do not think you are medically trained after reading your comment. I also do not think you read the article well. Maternal history is of extreme importance in determining patients at risk during ante-natal care. If the clinic knew this lady had had 3 Caesarean section before, they would have referred her for another operation 2weeks before onset of labour. Secondly you will not see 3 scars on the patients abdomen when 3 Caesarean sections have been done. You will only see one. And having one Caesarean section is not a hundred percent indication for an elective operation, it depends on why that one was done. Thirdly, according to Dr Prah this patient arrived too late at the hospital, I could figure the womb had ruptured and the baby dead already while they could not save the mother due to complications of severe blood loss. Please let's appreciate the work our health personnel are doing under those strenuous conditions rather than jumping on them prejudiceously.

You have nailed it right dear colleague. Gone are the days when we were made to think doctors were magicians. In SOME ways, doctors are like computers, garbage in garbage out! Doctors only work with facts, history (symptoms) and observations (signs), so to keep information from them is like digging your own grave. Let this be a warning to all. Keep your doctor well informed and you can get the best of care.

And by the way, if you think herbal and traditional medicine is superior, then by all means, let's go that way when Ebola finally arrives in Ghana!

Every physician should have electronic access to any patient's medical history. That means all Ghanaians should possess unique National ID numbers (NID).
Even if patients are willing to provide medical history, their memories would hardly be reliable.

I do not agree completely with the doctors response but as a country we need to understand they are also humans. if as a person you have been very close to a doctor you will be surprised how hard they work. 2 a.m when you are all sleeping they keep working and they have been working the last morning. Sometimes you have four people needing urgent or emergency treatment and the doctor may be all alone trying to help all these people. What we need to understand is that good quality care and good health is dependent not only on the health worker but the patients as well. How come blacks in America have way more maternal mortality than their counter part whites or Indians ?. Simple reason a lot do not seek prenatal care and only show up in late phase of pregnancy or labor thereby increasing their risk of death.

But if the people are rude and unprofessiona, what do you expect. I was at a hospital where a lady brought her grand daughter for treatment. they made her wait for more than an hour. then the girl went into crises before they started ordering the old lady about... to go the dispensary and bring this and that and those. then the girl died! they had more than an hour to save this girl and they didnt and know one asked them anything!
Another time i was at this same hospital for treatmment. by the time i finished talking, the doctor had finishing writing his prescription and they gave me some injection. in about five 5 minutes, i started growing hives and was swelling all over my face and body....they had to rush me back to the consulting room again for new diagnosis... since i nearly went fatal and my familiy was loud, the doctor took his time this time. I can recount hundreds of bad hospital experiences that i ve seen. dont worry about negative criticisms of health workers, do something about it!
