On December 4, 2012, days before the parliamentary and presidential elections, a British Company (Blue Energy) announced that it would build the Africa's largest solar power in Ghana in Western Region (155MW at a cost of $400 million). The project was reported to be ready to produce electricity by 2014 and fully completed by October 2015. What happened and was it an election hoax? This was reported by BBC with the heading: "Ghana Solar Energy Plant set to be Africa's largest" and the UK Guardian Newspaper with the heading: "Africa's largest solar plant to be built in Ghana". I will not believe this new solar investment in Ghana until it happens.

Such an investment in solar at the national level will direct our attention to renewable sources of energy and even make ordinary people think more of solar than we do now.

How durable are solar panels? What is the annual maintenance cost going to be? Have we run out of ideas? We cannot invest our resources on an ephemeral power generation system.
It must last.

This a private endeavor with ZERO govt involvement or resources. The govt is broke and doesn't have a Cedi to pay its bills let alone invest in such a project.

equator heat in Africa and sand are not conducive for solar system. According to latest scientific find, too much humidity from the sun damages solar and also sandy area like desert is not good for it either. The best climate for solar system is the meditteranean climate like that of Morocco and even there the solar panels are located in non desert area of Morocco.
I don't know where the solar will be located in Ghana but we have to consider the two factors of humidity levels and sand. Africa has a lot of sun but we should not just think of only the abundance per se.
