CONFLICT OF INTEREST
Ghanaians and our governments seem completely oblivious to the above.
The Woyome scandal has once again exposed this problem at the heart of our governance. The Attorney General's defiant response to Martin Amidu's concerns show how blinded she and the government are. The truth is that given her previous role as an attorney and/or that of her law firm, she was never in a position to vigorously represent Ghana in this case. These same conflicts affected Mrs. Mould-Idrisu and Barton-Oduro. To be fair, this is not the first time this has surfaced. We had the NDC government invite Merchant Bank to a meeting to discuss a loan owed by the brother of the Vice-President, now President Mahama who
incredibly showed up for the meeting. He later claimed not to have taken part in the discussion! There have been instances of a Finance Minister who represented the government of Ghana and seller of a Presidential plane purchased by Ghana. There were people who got shares in Tullow and other oil companies while representing Ghana in bringing them to Ghana and there was President Kufuor who stunningly awarded himself a medal. To be clear, President Kufuor deserved a Medal but not from himself! What is wrong? Should ethics be compulsory in our schools? Should our religious leaders preach more about right and wrong? Should every Ministry and the Presidency have an Office of Public Integrity? Who shall guard the guardians? Something needs to be done.
God bless George Owusu and his partner for making Ghana oil exploration a reality.
