Since news of the hijacking of the Ghanaian registered Chinese fishing vessel, Lu Rong Yuan Yu 917, broke, there have been many twists to the story, making it difficult for one to really make sense of the incident. This, of course, raises very critical questions.
Lu Rong Yuan Yu 917, was said to have been carrying 25 Ghanaians and 5 chinese, according to Martin Asiedu-Dartey, a citifm and TV3 reporter. In his report posted on TV3’s website (on Thursday, 5th February 2015 with the title ‘Ghanaian vessel hijacked, 1 dead, 3 missing’), Asiedu-Dartey states that “the robbers stabbed one of the men manning the vessel killing him instantly”. He also reports that “in a bid to escape from the pirates, three others fell into the water and are feared dead.” One can readily see a deficit here, as we are not told the whereabouts of the other 26 men on board the vessel.
Some other reports have it that there were 25 Ghanaians and 2 Chinese on board the Lu Rong Yuan Yu 917. 20 of them were said to have jumped overboard, or were forced to jump, and were rescued by a patrol boat. As to whether the 3 people reported to be missing were among those who jumped overboard or not, one cannot tell.
Another report by Citifm’s Efua Idan Osam (posted on Thursday 5th February, 2015 1:05 pm, under the title “Chinese fishing vessel hijacked; one feared dead”), corroborates that of Asiedu-Dartey; with the only departure being the number of people on board the vessel. Osam reports 22 Ghanaians and 6 Chinese crew on board as against Asiedu-Dartey’s 25 Ghanaians and 5 chinese. Whatever the number is, we are still not told their whereabouts in her story as well.
Vincent Kubi, a Daily Guide reporter, perhaps throws a little more light on the dark part of the story. He writes; “EMMANUEL DZESSE, a Ghanaian fisherman, has been reported dead and three other fishermen missing after a Chinese fishing vessel was hijacked by pirates near Takoradi in the Western Region.” At least now we know the name of the deceased. He also reveals the identities of the 3 persons who are missing as Daniel Oppong, Kwao Yankson and Isaac Bentsil. However, Kubi’s story contradicts those of Asiedu-Dartey and Osam in many ways. While the latter report that the incident occurred on Togolese waters and that Emmanuel Dzesse was a crew member, the former mentions Takoradi as the setting of the occurrence and tells us that the deceased was a fisherman. Whose version of ‘the truth’ should we believe? Are the journalists’ sources not the same? Or is anyone hiding anything from the public? If so, to what end?
According to a report by GhanaWeb News, “Mr Godfrey Baidoo Tibu, Head of Monitoring, Control and Surveillance Division of the Fisheries Commission, said information came through to the monitoring centre on the hijack and they relayed it to the Navy. Mr Tibu said the information came through because of the tracking device put on the vessel in accordance with the fisheries regulations.” The question then is, when did Mr. Tibu and his outfit receive information on the hijack? Was it at a time when the vessel was still in Ghana’s waters? If yes, how could the Ghana navy not have acted swiftly just as they did in the case of the tanker ship hijacked off the coast of Nigeria?
Again, according to Lieutenant Asiamah (of the Ghana navy), as reported by GhanaWeb News, “they called the Togolese Navy to stand by when they realized the vessel was almost in Togolese waters.” The lieutenant added that “the vessel then entered Nigerian waters where the pirates abandoned it.” Once again, one would like to know why Lieutenant Asiamah and his men could not put a call through to their Nigerian counterparts to intercept the vessel.
Beyond that, it would be interesting to find out why out of the many people on board the Lu Rong Yuan Yu 917, only Emmanuel Dzesse was stabbed. One would also like to know what the vessel was carrying and where exactly it was heading. Don’t tell me they were fishing!
However, a source close to Emmanuel Dzesse’s family has revealed that the body has been deposited at the Volta Regional Hospital. According to the source, the family is still in a shock and would want the Ghana Navy to provide them with further and better information on the death of their beloved. Emmanuel’s aged mother, his wife, and children cannot stop crying especially when they think about the way he died.
