The government of Ghana should pay some people to do that and we do not need a rocket scientist to tell us that. This is commonsense. Employ some people. Pay them good and that will see the end of refuse engulfing our cities etc. After collecting taxes, what is the sense of telling the same people to go out and clean the street, gutters etc?
Our leaders, after given the baton to lead, act as if they have lost their sense of thinking.

My question to you is,in South Carolina where you used to live,do you know any single county or city that the government asked people to go out to clean their areas every month, why not run the city like the way you saw it in South Carolina, why you have to join the backward way we do things in Ghana, have you so soon forgot how clean Columbia,SC is or you are already tired.
I hope next one people don't come out to take even a trash if you guys cannot learn to do the right thing.
Stop wasting time for people,Saturday's especially the first one in the month is very important to Ghanaians.
Do you have to wait up until there is cholera outbreak before you start asking people to clean up their areas every month, why not everyday,do you know how many trash can pile up in every month?
This exercise is a useless exercise which was dead before arrival.

This bullshit did not work during JJ's time when workers and students were "forced" to do menial jobs like working at the harbor, trash pickup etc., so why would it work now? Okoe has lived abroad and the president/ministers are always in and out of other countries, do they see volunteers sweeping and cleaning gutters or paid sanitation workers? The health of citizens is very important and therefore the government ought to invest in that. Cholera is all over the place, Ebola is knocking on our door, and Korle Bu hospital is packed when you visit due to the bad sanitation in the country. There are several programs that can be cut to re-allocate the funds to hire more sanitation workers. Hiring of the unemployed helps the economy as well. I don't understand the current administration, they manage to dumb down the experienced folks they hire -- I was expected so much from Okoe and Spio but both have been a disappointment. By the way, is Zoomlion the only trash removal company in the country? All I hear is Zoomlion, Zoomlion; I think Zoomlion needs some serious competition -- this would keep them on their toes to be more efficient and also reduce their billing rates. Stop this voluntary cleanup exercise and hire the right people to do the job, it is a win - win for the government and the country.

You disagree but you are not saying what the solution should, disagree without a suggestion does not help anybody.
The government can pass ordinance for every household to pay for trash collection at their doors while the government place dumpsters in many areas which the government should be responsible for its collection and payment.
As for tax, they take too much tax in that country more than even America, they can use part to pay for some of these services, they don't need any more tax, people paying property taxes should have this included, what are they using the property tax they are taking from the people for.
They should make it mandatory for people to place trash cans in front of their offices and businesses and make littering illegal which police should enforced giving ticket to people to go pay in district offices or post offices but not to put people in jail for such things,it should just be a ticket unless the person fails to pay,no need taking anybody to court for littering or not removing trash, during the revolution we all saw what happened to,people who litered though we don't want something like that it is about time we did something about cleaning in Ghana,to wait up until things go out of hands is the reason why our roads, buildings and others are what they are today and waiting for a whole month before bothering people to go out to clean is part of lack of culture of maintenance on our part, this is a failed policy.
A lot is done on Saturdays including shopping, funerals, weddings and others, you cannot tell somebody to leave a funeral ground to go out to do cleaning before coming back for the funeral.
Before you make a policy you sit down, think about it and even make consultations before taking a decision but in this case just one minister without doing his homework well got up to announce we need to have a national sanitation day every first week of the month.
Are you going to close the markets, stores, hospitals, the roads and others on that day, what about those at TV and radio stations, they have to clean before they go to work?
It is a senseless thing to drive all the way to Kumasi to give trash cans and cleaning equipments to Asantehene while people who supposed to manage cleaning in the city are sitting there.
Is the chief now sanitary inspector in Kumasi?

Citizens are prepared to help any government that is serious. There is no need to help when the government is playing "hide-and-seek-game" with the very people who voted them into power.
Just think outside the box and ask what is being done with all the revenues we are getting from our natural resources? We prefer big and huge government that makes no sense than small one that can deliver.
A small nation like Ghana should not have that number of MPs in parliament and our Ministers are too many. Cost cutting and saving money to take of situation like sanitation is more important than those useless minister and MPs we are paying for nothing.
Have you wondered why we should dole out at least $20,000 ever four years as ex-gratia to our MP, Minister, Council of State members etc and where is the money coming from? Does it make sense to sit and get surrounded by garbage which comes with diseases while we pay such huge and useless monies to "do-nothing" Minister and the rest? Why do you think we should continue doing that and tell the same people we tax to support such foolishness to go out and clean the street?
The Mayor was living in the US before joining the government and when was the last time he was told to go out and clean the street? We should elect people with the sense to lead and stop the trivialities that is sinking the image of our dear nation.
There is no need to tell the people to go out and clean when the government can employ some people on full time basis to do that work.

For the government to tell its citizens to stop going to work and shop owners shutting their stores and clean the streets and gutters, it is unheard of. Nowhere in the world its be citizens asked to do that kind of job which people are employed and paid to do. If those employed to do the work are not performing, then the Mayor should be fired and replaced with someone who will make sure that those employed to do the work does it.

I don't how long you've been in the US, but The was a "Keep America Clean" and Keep America Beautiful" campaign in the US during late 60's and early 70's. Though no one was directly asked to go and clean up, it fostered a sanitation awareness. That is why the system is geared towards keeping the environment clean. Property owners accept the responsibility of keeping their areas clean and littering is at a minimum. People don't say " I've paid my taxes so I can litter and the government should clean up". The NSD in Ghana is just and attempt to foster that awareness in Ghana. And Lord knows we need it.

What is your point, they never asked anybody to go out and clean and you think what they are doing in Ghana is right, why they cannot do the same.
Let me tell you that litering is illegal in the US,you can only get away with it if not caught otherwise you get ticket.
I recently drove from the East to the West and all over you can see the sign reminding you that litering is not allowed but there is nothing in Ghana like that, businesses and offices don't have rest rooms and there is not even a single rest stop in the entire country on the highways so people are compelled to do anything at anywhere.
The US has it which helps to keep the environment clean, you can go out to clean everyday but if you don't have these things in place all that you are doing is useless.

It took a massive campaign in the US for people to get where it is now in terms of littering and obeying anti littering laws. Those signs you see started in the 60's when I first got to the US and I just retired after living and working in several states. How many Ghanaians do you think will obey litter laws? And how easy will enforcement be? We need environmental cleanliness awareness and, I believe, the NSD exercises are an attempt to get there. When that happens you will see more rest rooms, trash bins, etc in Ghana. And we will be healthier. I hope you and especially the loud and name-calling protesters get it.

The US had to wage a "Keep America Clean" campaign in the 60's and 70's to achieve the relatively clean environment they have today. Those who remember the commercial with a teary American Indian standing at a littered sea shore know what I am referring to. This exercise has little to do with paying taxes to hire someone to clean our mess. It is an attempt to create an awareness of the importance of environmental cleanliness and its maintenance. I can wager that many of those screaming about paying taxes haven't paid a pesewa in taxes for a while, if ever.

What kind of awareness are you talking about when they don't have measures in place to prevent people from litering?
Keep American clean is still there but governments all over the country have measures in place to prevent litering.
In many areas the cleaning and removal of trash is added to your property rate and in apartments too it,is added to your rent which I believe these guys are talking about, once you have that added to your rent or mortgage the rest is left with the government to do,yours is to follow the rules of trash disposal and they pick it up.
There is even something now called Valet Trash picking in some apartments set ups which you just open your door and live your trash can there and people contracted to do that will come and pick it up,
The government can include trash collecting in the fees they collect from the shop owners and that money used to pay the workers.
Just imagine professional like teachers who have to prepare their lesson notes to go teach our kids and take care of their personal issues being asked to go out to clean, when will they get time to prepare for school having got tired from that cleaning or that weekend they should not prepare for classes?

There is no where in the world that its citizens are forced to clean the streets and gutters except in Africa of which Ghana is part. No civilized nation will do that. This is a job which is available for those who wants it for a pay. Okoe Vanderpuije should understand that he cannot not force the citizens to clean the streets and silt the gutters. It is the responsibility of the city council to employ people to do that work. Okoe, if it is really true that he lived in America before should tell us in what instance did he EVER SAW any American citizen being asked to clean the streets of silt the gutters. In Ghana, there is no way that someone who is trying to put food at the table of his family will stop going to work for the sake of national sanitation day. Is the government going to feed his family? If Okeo feels those he had employed to do that job are not performing, they should be sacked and new ones who are willing to work are employed and leave the citizens alone. The later former President of Ghana, may his soul rest in peace, Atta Mills told Ghanaians that he will get rid of the filth in the streets of Ghana within 100 days of his presidency if the people vote for him. 7 years down the lane, we are still engulfed with filth. Whose fault is it? Okoe should ask NDC government and let them clean the cities not the citizens who are at the moment overburden with poverty and trying to survive.

Hei Angie, you don't need to applaud the government of its own responsibility in this particular issue. The City Government collects enough taxes for this purpose. Okoe Van is just useless as his paymaster the Son of Jakpa (Mahama).
Recently in the capital city of Malaysia, Kualalumpu, some concerned citizens raised money on their own to patch the city's potholes which is making motorist uncomfortable on the roads. The Mayor of the city came to stopped them from doing that job - insisting that it is not their responsibility to do that whilst the government continues collecting taxes from the citizens. The Mayor assured them that whatever bottlenecks which was preventing the job not to be done, he was going to uproot it and make sure that in the shortest possible time, those potholes they see, would not be seen anymore. This is a concerned leadership.
Oko Van cannot collect taxes and pay salaries and allowances for himself and his workers and tell the citizens to come and clean - that is absolutely nonsense. He needs to use the tax payers money to hire people who are roaming in the city aimlessly without job to be productive. E&OE.

You simply do not need a psychologist to explain the behaviour of the communities. Everybody has a job. Some are not used to this kind of work. Is that how other countries are kept clean? It would not work. We must be real. People are crying for jobs. Why don't you employ people from the communities to keep their environment clean and pay them. No money, is not acceptable. One cedi or more from each worker a month should be able to pay them.

The Government of Ghana is supposed to take care of sanity and not the citizens. Because of the complete failure of Ghana Governments up to date we again should pay the price.
Government hasn't invested in this sector for years and only gives contracts to their sympathizers who can't do the job. Landfill sites are not the solution we should find ways and sans to get a full waste-recycling plant who can even produce energy from burning the waist. Government should invite investors who can build and run such a plant since all projects run and management by Government have failed since 57 years.
We Ghanaians have to change our attitude towards work and how we choose our political leaders. The problems lies with us citizens since we request bribes or other things from the MP'S we elect. We want everything for free and then when these politicians are in power then we shouldn't wonder why their are not performing. Think about it and lets work on a Ghana which has something to show for after 57 years cause up to date there is nothing we have to show for.

The whole National Sanitation Nonsense is not resonating with the expectations of the people. If a university graduate like Kofi Boakye could think that arresting the offenders of this National Sanitation Bullshit then, sorry, those trying to impose university education on us are doing us more harm than good. If National Sanitation days could sanitize communities and cities then Nigeria would have been the cleanest city on earth. Go there and see. They practice the strictest version of sanitation days( twice a month) with no movements of persons and verhicles from morning to 12noon yet go to their major cities like Lagos, Ibadan, Kano, Kaduna, etc and see the filth engulfing them. I don't blame Kofi Boakye because he is the police commander in a region where hero worship is rife. You remember when the crooked king was enstooled in this same region they use to call him King Solomon. Now what do they call him.
