Soldiers Save Holiday Makers From Robbers

The timely intervention of soldiers on duty at Abono on the shores of Lake Bosomtwe, saved holiday makers during the recent 46th Independence anniversary from being robbed of their money, mobile phones, wrist watches, necklaces and other valuables by a gang of robbers, who stormed the resort.

The gang numbering about 25 arrived at Abono at about 5:00pm in a mini bus.

The soldiers apprehended one Ishaku Mahmoud, a member of the gang for snatching a necklace from a holidaymaker.

His colleagues then rushed on the soldiers to rescue him and this forced the soldiers to fire warning shots, leaving the gang with no option but to flee.

The soldiers later released Mahmoud after disciplining him. Soon after his release, his colleagues whisked him into their bus and hurriedly drove off.

Most of the holidaymakers, who spoke to the GNA, commended the soldiers for the good work and the Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma District Assembly for the security arrangements and expressed the hope that the assembly would continue to protect holidaymakers on subsequent occasions.

Dr Moses Mensah, an Environmental Consultant, who was at Abono with some colleagues, said the Lake Bosomtwe resort was one of the wonders of the world and suggested that its beautification should be given to students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi as project work to reduce the cost.

He said it is healthy for people to admire nature and asked Ghanaians to develop an interest in eco-tourism, since Ghana abounds in such tourist destinations.

"Forget about the distance and the cost involved in visiting an eco-tourist site, since what you gain in terms of happiness and excitement cannot be bought or quantified."

Dr Mensah appealed to the District Assembly to improve the telecommunication and transport networks at the lakeside.

The assembly should also train more tour guides and provide more sailing boats to make the place more attractive, he said, adding that the two outboard motors boats currently plying on the lake are woefully

inadequate for the number of people who throng there during holidays
