Each government which comes to power in Ghana seeks to sell a strategic public utility such as ECG, Ghana Telecom for short term gains. Are our leaders visionary? What will our future generations live on? Why are gradually surrendering our economic sovereignty to foreign buyers? We need to tread carefully with such sales. The ordinary poor people will be further marginalised and impoverished with such sales of heirlooms such as ECG.

DR. BAWUMIA:-----------
“In the last six years, the NDC has borrowed US$27 billion. Before that, we, the NPP, borrowed a total of US$5.5 billion in eight years. Compare that to the NDC borrowing $27 billion in six years and ask yourself what they have done with all that money,” the running mate to Nana Akufo-Addo said.
He said, though a lot more money has been spent, it is a paradox of economic management that this level of excessive spending has only led to greater hardships being visited on the people.
“NDC inherited a public debt stock of GHS9.5 billion in 2009,” the former Deputy Governor of the central bank said. “Today, Ghana’s debt has gone up to GHS65.7 billion. So when I say the stakes are high I am talking about the destiny of our country, Ghana, the future of the youth.”
“The NDC has been taxing everything, including condoms and cutlasses. In terms of resources, this NDC government has had more resources than any other government. We did not have oil. Yet, Ghanaians know what we did with the limited resources we had. We spent money responsibly to create the NHIS, introduce Capitation Grant, expand access to education, we spent wisely on infrastructure and built more roads than any other government,” he said.

"The drug barons are currently targeting Ghana making us a vulnerable nation hence we must toughen our national security at all our Airports. If Ms Ametefeh has been allegedly doing such manoeuvres since 2009 goodness knows how many of such people have used this method just because of their status in society as security around such people have been relaxed. No one can be trusted when it comes to such issues any more as our security is at stake. We should not even allow the VVIP section security to be relaxed so that unscrupulous people take advantage of such freedom afforded to them in the wake of this saga".

ECG must be privatised because it has too many employees yet they fail to stop illegal connections and bills remain unpaid. Again, some of the workers are actually involved in the illegal connections and also collect bribes from customers who have either done illegal connections or are due for disconnection for unpaid bills. If ECG is privatised such bad apples will be dismissed for colluding and collecting bribes and bills will be collected. That way ECG will have more funds to invest and provide better services. Moreover, the wage bill on the state will reduce. For these reasons, I fully support the sale of ECG. This is common sense and Ghana should not wait for IMF to make such a recommendation.

Well said Kofi. This is the reason I continue to support President Kufuor's sale of Ghana Telecom. The sale of Ghana Telecom opened the market for private companies that have made telephone access easier and cost cheaper because of competition.
Ghana Telecom had 6500 employees at the time it was sold and was losing 50 million dollars every year. Can you imagine 6500 more workers on government payroll now with SSSS wages? Vodafone bought GT with 6500 workers and immediately trimmed the workforce to 2300, getting rid of the uneeded and ghost workers and turned a company that was losing 50 million a year to a profitable company.
I just don't understand this Ghanaian belief that government has to hold on to companies that it cannot manage and draining our resources, is it the pride?
If selling ECG will stop dumsor dumsor for ever, let's do it immediately and after that TOR too should be sold to improve the supply of petroleum products to Ghanaians and stop the constant shortage.

Over employment is a major problem when it comes to state owned enterprises. We have too many workers handling these establishments that is why they cannot even earn their own salaries not to talk of making any profit for the government.
Imagine that the revenue AMA collects every year is not enough to even pay salaries and sitting allowances of their members.
For example, in the developed world, it's about 40 workers (i.e. from the luggage handler to the Flight Engineer) to one plane. However, in Ghana, when Ghana Airways was in operation, it was about 200 workers to one plane. This means, Ghana Airways was paying about 160 workers that were not needed.
This is the reason why many government owned businesses cannot survive and have become a huge drain on the government purse. No private investor wishing to make profit will keep such a huge labour force that are not needed.

The criminals of the NDC government are about to do it again. What is the experience of the wholesale divestiture that NDC implemented in the 90's? Massive unemployment and nothing more. Not a single of the enterprises sold / looted has benefited the people. Mahama lives in a totally unreal world far, far removed from reality. He doesn't care about the suffering people, and all he cares about is accumulating more wealth - the neurosis of corruption. One million is never enough. Two million when acquired only whets the appetite more. And so the thievery goes on even more vigorously.
A restructured and properly managed ECG with the qualified people in place - not criminals and ex-convicts like Sipa Yankey at Ghana National Gas - will succeed. A privatized Electricity Corporation will operate only for maximum profit through astronomical increases! What has been the result of bringing in foreign management for the Water Corporation (by the Kufuor Administration)? Has the water been delivered without interruptions 24 x 7? It is time show our resolve against misrule as the heroic and righteous people of Burkina Faso did (granted their gains have been neutralized by the neo-colonial Burkina army in the pay of France).
Enough is enough. Mahama must stop or go!

You are being dishonest here. The European people themselves are fighting the austerity measures imposed by their banksta-controlled governments. The fiscal crisis in the developed world has largely been caused by the toxic investments that were made in the financial sector (casino capitalism). This made the market and the entire financial system ready to crash unless bailed out by trillions of the peoples money followed by austerity measures.
The European workers and people are struggling against the austerity measures. It would be suicidal for developing countries without any safety net measures (like unemployment insurance payments/ "dole", food stamps, rent subsidies / council flats etc).

Has the foreign management of the Ghana Water Corporation brought an n end to water stoppages? No!!! I agree with you that serious reforms have to be carried out at ECG. The Boards should be dissolved and done away with altogether. They are nothing but just mechanisms for doling out "jobs-for-boys". And, yes, some reduction of the workforce is inevitable. But the source of the problem is not the workers but our ENERGY POLICY and TECHNOLOGY. Akosombo cannot sustain the energy needs of a tripled population. The population of Ghana in 1966 was no more than 8 million when the Akosombo hydro-electric dam was brought online. The 20 years of P/NDC and the 8 years of NPP should have been enough to implement a sustainable energy policy - based on mostly solar and wind where possible.

Look dis 3000needless, lazy workers who are burden to the already-sick wage must go. This number is even tooooo small. I will recommend the whole ECG needless workers must be evacuated immediately and be replaced by serious foreign workers! And no worker with party colours should be allowed to work there bcos Ghanaians are not serious human beings. The privatisation should be done immediately.

To avoid such misinformation, we put out the party’s
contribution to the generation of electricity during our
administration.
The following Plants were added or started during NPP’s
two term in Office;
1. VRA Plant- Tema (Founded by government)- 110
megawatts
2. Mines Reserve Plant (Founded by Mining
Companies with Government support)- 18megawatts.
3. The VRA ATHOL Plant- Tema- 50megawatts
4. Emergency Plant- Tema (Founded by government)-
120 megawatts
5. Asogli Plant, Tema (Founded by Private investor
with government support)- 200 megawatts
6. Bui Hydroelectric – 400 megawatts
7. Aboadze Thermal Plant (T3), Takoradi (NPP
secured funding)- 136 megawatts
8. Osorno (CENIT) Thermal Plant, Tema- 120
megawatts
9. Kpone/Zachem Thermal Plant- 220 megawatts
10. Akosombo Retrofit increase Akosombo’s capacity
from 920MW to 1020MW
11. The NPP also by strenuous efforts superintended
the discovery of oil in commercial quantities, which
made possible the availability and production of Gas.
All these were bequeathed to the NDC in 2009. The NDC
assumed office when there was no load shedding in
January 2009.
Three (3) and half years into the tenure of the NDC, the
nation was plunged into load shedding. This load
shedding has persisted up to today with varying
intensity.
It has taken the NDC five (5) years and we still have not
seen the completion of the gas project, despite several
proposed completion dates from the Minister and his
associates.
Instead of apologising for the hardship they have
brought unto Ghanaians and businesses, the Minister of
Energy is rather shifting blame and engaging in
bragging.
It is a reflection of the Minister’s ability that the
electricity generation has been taken away from his
portfolio. We urge him to work harder in his remaining
portfolio and do less propaganda.

ecg does not belong to any one individual in this country oooooo. we know very well that the whole energy sector is having some challenges that must be solved.
pointing the wrong finger at ecg does not make sense because ecg is like a retailer who buys from the whole saler.once she goes to buy and does not get the quantity she needs to satisfy her ever demanding customers, then some sacrifices have to be made...lets hold the government responsible for all these power crisis and leave ecg alone... the ndc should come out boldly and give ghanaians the true picture of the economy and stop blaming the ecg alone.. does ecg generate power in this country? if the generators cannot do their work well why criticize the distributor... ghanaians lets shine and open our eyes wide before these greedy and selfish politicians sell us all back to slavery..........we should even thank God that the ecg is helping the country by providing employment for many people to reduce the number of the unemployed on the streets..
but are we even ready to pay for the new services of the new owners..no more government subsidies oooooo....the politicians who are paid to make sure that the various government institutions function properly have all failed.. have we ask ourselves what the energy minister and his teams are doing to solve the problems... if they claim that ecg is under performing, can the government come out boldly to justify to ghanaians the main reason why he wants to sell a profitable organization like the ecg....has this same government been able to pay all their debts to the ecg....all those in support of this sale and those accusing ecg workers of incompetence should know that these politicians would sell it and chop the money with their families alone..they only need our support to carry out their bad plans and nothing would change in the current economic tragedy we all find our selves in........lets all say a big no to this bad plan of the government.lets make our leaders make use of the big qualifications they hold to solve our problems permanently than resorting to these shallow methods of selling our properties to feed only their families........gud day...
