It would appear that those in control of the NDC, for the time being, were bent on excluding other bona fide members of the Party who may wish to lay democratic claims to who becomes the next flag bearer of the Party by excluding them even before the mortal remains of the demised President were interred. It is also symptomatic of how political party elites in Ghana and Africa worm their way into the confidences of persons perceived as likely to ascend to power positions for purposes of eventual personal economic gain at the expense of the generality of the mass of Party members and the Nation which every President swears to serve under the Constitution

Mahama has proven he can't reassign or kick out Emmanuel Kofi Armah Buah, the Energy Minister, without incurring the wrath of the Nzemas, hence going around him to create another ministry that to all purposes and intentions will be doing exactly the same thing the Energy Ministry is doing. Just when was Energy not the same as Power?
We all recall how and when Nzema chiefs and people lobbied to have Kofi Buah appointed as Energy Minister, for the first time raising to the radar that they perceive the oil deposits at sea as primarily theirs and thus must be given 10% of all revenue accruing. Well, they called on Mahama's rain-check campaign lies that he would give them 10% of oil revenue if he was elected president. Now the lying lizard has been cornered. He can't fire a non-performing minister so he creates a new one around his ministry, as if more cooks will make for a tasty soup, rather than confusion and boundary oversteppings in terms of ministerial functions. Sankwas!

Chief, I agree with you that a new ministry is not required to deal with the energy crisis. Instead, the President should have sacked the minister for Energy who has failed and is incompetent. All what is required is effective and efficient Energy Minister with one deputy who will be responsible for power generation and distribution. How can there be separate ministries for Energy and Power? Is power not part of Energy? Waste of scarce resources.
The President should have sacked the MD of ECG long time ago also for incompetence. Until Mahama takes on incompetent ministers and heads of public institutions, his presidency will fail abysmally.

I thought as much what would be the job for the previous ministry or it would be dissolved like NACOB?
I quote from the article “…The President expects the new Ministry to bring about a sharper focus on the generation, supply and efficiency of power to match the growth the economy is experiencing.” My point is, instead of new ministry why the president wouldn't create that 'focus' section within the same ministry such as focus sectors for different and/or related energy needs?
Frankly, Ghana is already in serious public sector expenditure taking substantial chunk of GDP, however without reciprocal productivity as we do complain daily. If its human problem why don't the president find the right calibre of people for the job?
I think the president should have created those 'focus' sector within the same ministry for Dr Kwabena Donkor to head.

here, l will urge the president considering the rate of expansion in the energy sector to totally discard any idea of government exporting any power looking at the quantum of energy we need ourselves to transform our country into an industrialized, value addition and vibrant economy capable of throwing up the relevant volumes of jobs, accelerate wealth creation and prosperity and meet the employment need of the growing number of graduates from our training institutions as well as other members of society who need to earn a dignified living.

The Government must encourage the use of Renewable Energy Technologies (RETs) in our energy mix, and abandon the business of imposing import duties on equipment for solar, wind and other alternative energy systems - these include complementary equipment (batteries, controllers and inverters). Such a policy would aid the Ghanaians to fend for themselves by producing their own power; it may turn out to be a huge plus for the authorities - as pressure would then ease on all over the ongoing Dumsor, Dumsor. The intended large-scale distribution of Net-meters would enable such importers to upload excess energy during peak hour to the grid - such consumers would then be credited with reductions in their ECG bills.
I bet that many Ghanaians, and certainly most in the diaspora would rush to send down systems to incorporate in their homes, or help their relatives to acquire RET systems. Solar, wind and other alternative small-scale power systems would then mushroom like we now find mobile phones everywhere in Ghana. ECG would then be free to cater mainly to heavy industry users and the like.

This MP is the one advocating for coal as a source of energy in the country, at a time the whole world is moving away from coal.
The generation of energy from coal which this MP has been advocating and has thus been appointed as a Minister of Power, would be very unlikely to work, in view of recent climate change measures to limit greenhouse gases and to protect the environment. It's again another ad-hoc and knee jerk reaction and desperate measure, by a gov't that has failed to invest in electricity power generation by looting and thieving the funds, right off the blocks, when they got into gov't. It's a parallel ministry and it is going to be a further waste on the already overburdened national kitty which the gov't is claiming they need to protect from a ballooning wage bill.
This ministry of power is a waste. The Mahama NDC gov't should return the looted funds, recoup the looted funds as ordered by the Supreme Court, prevent the looting of the national kitty by his family and friends looting brigade, and channel those funds to the ministry tasked with the investment, generation and distribution of electric power, instead of setting up parallel, unwarranted ministries to loot the national kitty into the abyss.

In January 2001, Ghana's petroleum base was down to two weeks supply, power was being rationed, crude oil was selling at close to $80/barrel. Kuffuor brought in generators and managed to get Obasanjo to give Ghana a 90-day credit for crude oil supplies.
What has this clueless rogue done so far, even with world petroleum prices tumbling? We don't need a ministry of power. Just give a 50% tax break to industries and individuals who install solar panels for power generation. That will relieve the pressure on power generation and supply.
Meanwhile, one or two mini dams can be built upstream of main Volta Dam, to take the silt that has choked the Dam to the extent that even in a good rainy year, the dam receives only about 50% of its total capacity of water.
This is not rocket science, just common sense which seems to be lacking in Ghana's so-called leaders!
