"Rev Appiah said Christians and Muslims in Ghana “should continuously be praying and fasting for the Almighty God to wipe away this dangerous disease."
Questions to ponder:
1. Do Muslims pray to Yahweh, the God of Christians?
Don't they pray to Allah, the god of Islam, who has no Son to redeem the fallen Adamic race?
2. Does prayer and fasting guarantee a favorable answer from God? No.
Throughout the Bible it was only one day during the whole year that God required that his people afflict (Hebrew "anah" --abase self, humble, chasten, fast) themselves--and that was the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16:29). All other calls for fasts were recommended.
Observe God's type of a fast:
"Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours. Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high. Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD? Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?" Isaiah 58:3-7.
Let's hear the word of the Lord from Zechariah regarding a fast:
"Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh month, even those seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me? And when ye did eat, and when ye did drink, did not ye eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves? Should ye not hear the words which the LORD hath cried by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, and the cities thereof round about her, when men inhabited the south and the plain? And the word of the LORD came unto Zechariah, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother: And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart' Zechariah 7:5-10.
God's type of fast is at best personal, and symbolic of an inner change -- a state of mind of prayerful regard for the welfare of others instead of our own self-centered concerns. And instead of the abstinence from food (fast), we abstain from sins of omission, commission, and of faith. Christ is our example of a fast. His whole life was a symbol of a fast.
"Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth"
1 Peter 1:22
Isn't it about time that we start our prayer and fasting from sin as a way of life?
"And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him" Colossians 3:17.
