Sarah got Isaac in miraculous circumstances because the Bible said Sarah had ceased menstruation so she doubted it when Abraham's visitors predicted she would have a child. Thirty seven years later Sarah died and Abraham then approximately 140 years took a wife Keturah with whom he had six children(Genesis 25), meaning the lady must have been younger and of child bearing age to be able to give Abraham those children. I remember reading a statement by Spio-Gabrah, former Ambassador to the USA, where he stated that only Ghanaians in their forties should be appointed as Ambassadors to the USA, for the job is a difficult one. hat Spio-Gabrah failed to recognize is that while he served as Ghana's ambassador to the USA, many countries had ambassadors serving in the USA who were in their sixties and seventies, and they probably performed their duties better than he did. Ghana's societal age barometer on dating, marriage, and assumption of political office is antiquated. Imagine all these corrupt Ghanaians having the nerves to criticize someone who has not broken any law of the land or Church principles. It's comical and hypocritical. Who made Bishop Otabil a dating police officer-in-charge? Otabil has no authority over Mr. Pot-Belly.

Given all the practical problems in a marriage of 60-year old plus men to 22-year old young ladies and their respective groups, the fact remains that such is a Culture that we have had in Ghana since the beginning of time.

So, if the Pastor wants to confront that kind of marriage, he must be bold enough to confront the Culture that allows it.

The days of betrothals are not over yet. Little infant girls are assigned their future Husbands long before they even understand what marriage means. The Girls barely have a say in such decisions. They often obey their parents in silent reluctance just as their Culture and Religion require of them.

Poor families also, usually, see it as a way to rescue themselves from endless poverty by giving off their beautiful daughters to much older presumed richer men for marriage. The daughters may reluctantly or silently acquiesce to such proposition by their Parents because the girls are supposed to obey their Parents. This phenomenon is neither unique to any particular Tribe in Ghana, nor even to Ghana or Africa.

Younger Ladies are seen to be married to much older men all over the World. That is because we all share this archaic, ancient tradition of Prosperous men taking younger, sexier Ladies for wives as part of their blessed reward for a life well-built. 'Trophy wives' is what opponents of that tradition prefer to call them.

However, we do not see any of the leading opponents standing up against the root of such behavior--the Cultures and Traditions and Religions around the World that allow that. The Bible itself is replete with similar types of marriage. Would the Pastor be bold enough to call for the expurgation of any of such stories in the Bible that seem to glorify, or, at least, embrace such a marriage?

In a growing democratic World, perhaps, all that is necessary is to help educate the Women to claim their rights to make their own decisions as to whom they want to share the rest of their lives with as intimate lovers and partners, preferably, husbands.

If the pastor is going to attack the Women for accepting the hands of richer older men because of the latter's wealth, he should then be ready to confront the pragmatic reality that majority of marriages thrive not solely on pure Love but on expectations of lives in comfort with partners who are relatively well-off. Would the Pastor advise all those women married for such reasons to seek divorce and begin all over again to look for partners whom they might love unconditionally? The old sugar daddies do not only include pot-bellies either. They increasingly learn how to keep in good shape like the Pastor to look more attractive to the younger girls. If it is the pot-bellies that matter much to the Pastor he may be missing many that need to accept his preaching because they have shed the bellies to appear more romantic. By the way, what sins do the older men commit by reliving youthful fantasies? If the Pastor were to point at fornication, I'd say the sin was delineated for all ages and sexes. Why the did the Pastor not question the older 60-year old Ladies with 22-year old studs for husbands and lovers what they were doing with the younger muscle-ripped guys? Or, the Pastor Otabil is not aware of any such preference among the 60-year old Ladies? If the Pastor want to be taken seriously, he should non-sexist in his critique. Maybe he should start checking his congregation for their ID's to bar those he finds as inappropriately married to much younger folks from his Church. That would be a good start.

The last time I checked, the Pastor Otabil was all out against the Mahama's Government, not for the pervasive Corruption among its ranks but for the general economic hardship among folks. 'Money dey talk, oh,' Pastor!

If Pastor Otabil would whip the young ladies for marrying older folks for money, he should be ready to whack his own Clergy who lament over stringent economic times, reminding them that Jesus would rather have them spend their time and resources on espousing modesty and discouraging frantic pursuit of Wealth. And in the same breath, the Pastor must not cry when his coffers dry up because the rich old sugar daddies are spending all their money on the Girls and not paying tithes to the Church, and the Girls prefer the good times at the Night Clubs and Malls for shopping for Gucchis and Ralph Laurens to going to Church to shore up offertories.

It is always so convenient to choose who to blame for sanctimonious reasons while we ignore the root cause of their behavior that might be partly due to our own connivance.

What they do with their money, and how much pot-belly they might have, and who they marry, so long as they do not unduly, illegally coerce under-age Ladies to marry them, they may well tell you Pastor, that it is none of your business. They do not owe you anything to respond to your question: What business they have to be marrying younger ladies.

Welcome to the real World, if you just descended from Heaven! If the Pastor means business dissuading such type of marriages, he should be reaching out more to the families and try to educate them to understand why such marriages might be a problem to the couples along the way. Let him take on the Muslims who see such marriages as part of their religious demands. Let him have plenty of "Dough" to dole out to families needing a financial salvation they think marrying off their daughter to a rich old guy would bring them. Let him be ever so generous with fist-full of cash to the fashion-bitten young ladies who can't find jobs because of various reasons to satiate their unquenchable urge for brand name Clothing and accessories. Sadly, their nuptial male peers can't find jobs to support them either.
