As a salesperson for MTN, Ms. Lumor gets my vote for pushing what's in the interest of the hand that feeds her. However, short term monetary gains should not trump long-term strategy or a bigger picture of resolving youth employment in Ghana. In Western industrialized societies, kids do tend to push parents into buying/patronizing products via advertisements that catch their fancy, good or bad. The same is not true in Africa or Ghana where children eat what parents provide or wear clothing parents provide. So while mobile advertising may be in, there may be linkages between youth unemployment, proliferation of mobile/handheld devices and senseless street crimes in the nation. How do the nations service providers explain how the unemployed in Ghana get and sustain their mobile phones and gadgets without a cedi to their name in any day of the week? The aggressive advertising ongoing in Ghana targets the youth even when Ghana's youth, educated and the not so educated, are more likely to be unemployed or underemployed?
Suggestion for MTN and the service provider industry in Ghana: why not put your resources together and open up training centers in Accra-Tema, Sekondi-Takoradi, Koforidua, Kumasi, Brong-Ahafo and Tamale where students can enroll for free mobile programming classes up to a year but with a caveat that all viable software produced by students under the contracted time period is legal property of sponsoring company? Service providers get to play an even bigger role in the computer literacy of Ghanaians while they gain potential customer base through the eventual employment of those going through their training programs.
