The West still has Anthrax, SARS and other virus diseases. Even they still have TB. Let me also ask how many African countries have contributed in material and Human services to countries ravaged by Ebola? Who told people that almighty USA has not her own economic problems? They have other things to do too with their resources. Like many African and Developing countries, money and resources sent to the region will be chopped by politicians. Others can help West Africa but Heavens help those who help themselves. Let Africans send Human resources to the region then.

This is why Africa must invest more seriously in research-oriented education at the universities and colleges, not the usual chew-poor-forget system.
There are many of these capable African researchers abroad who are helping the same Western countries.
Let the African Governments invite and give them appropriate motivation to help Africa.
At least, I know Kufuor's Government tried it, and it did succeed. Atta Mills' Government wanted to improve that path, but the enemies of African's success eliminated him. If not elimination, let somebody stops the ambiguous reports. Libya's Gadafi had a big African research center in his agenda. He was also eliminated.
So, Africans, I hope you remember the adage "No strength can break a broom, but even a weaker strength can break a broom stick." Forgive me if my quotation is wrong.
African Union MUST speed up the unification process so that we can stop the self destruction which is caused by the barriers created by the colonial bastards.
Africans must know that, it is time for us to emancipate ourselves. We cannot rely on anybody.
Like Karikari has said, those Western countries have their own problems. Additionally, they have their own agenda.Go to Youtube and listen to Obama carefully about ebola, and you would see that Kofi Anan's voice cannot change their agenda unless all African leaders from all walks of life, including Kofi Anan,Tutu,Turkson,Palmer Buckle, Sharubutu,Mugabe, Yahya Jammeh, and other African presidents unite to form a strategy that could help curb this ebola menace and also send strong message to the world about our continental effort and feeling.
If we don't act immediately, they will kill Africans and also make money from that evil act just as it happened with HIV.

Historically, the selfish Europeans and other rich white countries have only been interested in Africa's Raw Materials and Precious Metals.PERIOD !!!
When Kwame openly told the world about "HOW EUROPE UNDERDEVELOPED BLACK AFRICA" the CIA took him out in 1966.
Until Duncan arrived in Texas,The White communities still believed EBOLA is an African leprosy
... and even when he(Duncan)went to the hospital for help, they denied him the help he so desperately needed.
The World Health Organization was the first to report just how slow the rich world took to respond to his deadly epidemic.
Personally,this does not surprise me
one bit.
Look at what happened in RWANDA.The White rich communities did not care one bit. There was no immediate response there either. They sat by,and watched Africans killing fellow Africans.
AND THAT'S HOW THEY SEE EBOLA.
Now they are panicking even more than us.

Politicians in Africa are mostly thieves. Even though they get paid generously, their prime motive being in office is to steal. Steal to buy houses and expensive cars when hospitals are ill-resourced and roads are in bad state. So, Ghanaian politician want new cars even if there are no roads;more cars when 1 is enough; the most luxurious when reliability and economy should be emphasised. Ghana is struggling with cholera, caused by filth. Many have died needlessly from preventable diseases because the politicians and people that are supposed to serve the nations are bent on spending monies anyhow. Anyhow not on the state, but on themselves. Blame nobody but ourselves.

Containing Ebola requires aggressive infection and isolation controls. Where are the witchcraft practitioners and the mallams? cure ebola now. the white people who have been deployed are not doing anything special other than restricting the movement of those infected and also clamping down and monitoring those they have been in close contact with. Is this hard to do? we cant even do basic simple things. our leaders only love big homes and cars. africans are funny people and will forever look to the west. no matter how many cars or mansion they build, the white man will never respect you....face the fact.

Mr Annan,
I am surprised that you will make such a statement. It is unfortunate that you would blame worthy countries for not responding to this ebola virus quickly enough. Wealthy countries do not owe poor countries anything. Countries are poor because leaders and politicians have misused their resource.I thought when you left the UN you were going to continue to influence your African governments to stop the misappropriation of their scarce resources but you have been quiet about that. It is very easy to blame the white folks for our problems. They cannot continue to pour money and resources to failed govts who will prefer to loot and build mansions and mansions and live in opulence when their govts cannot provide good drinking water and basic necessities of life to their countries. Kofi, in this wealthy countries everybody including their presidents pay income taxes from which they give to poor countries to supplement their budgets. Now in your own country, ghana you have a constitution that exempts your president and others from paying income tax. Kofi pls speak about such issues and stop the blaming game of wealthy countries not doing enough to fight this dreadful disease. You live in a country where pastors/priest are deceiving the folks with praying to stop and cure ebola. Please redirect your energy to your own govts. Wealthy countries have their own issues to deal with.

Invented, packaged sealed and delivered. Why is a disease known for so many years and contained in Central Africa, pop up in West Africa, instead of say, Gabon, Rwanda, Angola, Chad etc even if carried by inoculated bats, rats or monkeys? How many dead Chimpanzee carcasses does it take?
Disease manipulation is nothing new! noetically.
"Transmission between natural reservoirs and humans is rare, and outbreaks of Ebola virus disease are often traceable to a single case where an individual has handled the carcass of a gorilla, chimpanzee, or duiker."
The idea that wars in some West African countries may have inured the outbreak is equally flatulent.
Our ignorance makes us too permissive, and Mr Annan ought to know better. Had Guatemala been at war? Only human deeds and misdeeds can affect our environment this adversely. We know how one in every four Africans is an Ebo: and how it became a derivative for Ebonics(may refer to: African American Vernacular English) and perhaps Ebola beyond predicate.
Here is Hillary Clinton's apologies for Guatemala STD experiments on NBC News
updated 10/1/2010 7:19:05 PM ET
When "medical researchers intentionally infected hundreds of people in Guatemala, including institutionalized mental patients, with gonorrhea and syphilis without their knowledge or permission more than 60 years ago."
Many of those infected were encouraged to pass the infection onto others as part of the study.
About one third of those who were infected never got adequate treatment. "The sexually transmitted disease inoculation study conducted from 1946-1948 in Guatemala was clearly unethical," according to the joint statement from Clinton and Sebelius. "Although these events occurred more than 64 years ago, we are outraged that such reprehensible research could have occurred under the guise of public health.
We deeply regret that it happened, and we apologize to all the individuals who were affected by such abhorrent research practices."
Dear Mr Annan, you know what germ warfare is, so don't visit this on us, we are not seeking alimony, help us seek out how this disease came about. Africa is a very old continent Ebola, from dead chimpanzee and or animals would have been our tower of babel, and complete annihilation.
Even in Congo and Sudan known for the first Ebola outbreaks in 1976 and the rest of the world including Russia there has been only 1633 deaths to date. Yet the three West African countries have recorded over 4,493 deaths to date and counting all from EBOV, the Congolese type of the Ebola virus. not the RESTV;Philippines, TAFV;Côte d'Ivoire, SUDV;Sudan, BDBV;Uganda, or RESTV:United States.
Hope this thing does not turn genetic and become one of the sins of Adam, that future African children may have sinned before their births.
Here we go again?? A new genetic history of HIV shows how the Aids pandemic almost certainly originated in the 1920s in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo, researchers have said.???

When Fahrakan and some notable 'blacks' charged the Ebola epidemic as an attempt to control the population of Africans, the reaction to Fahrakan was the usual condemnation to his extremities. Now, Kofi Annan's response on Ebola seems to 'rhyme' with the earlier charges; there's something here we must all pause to re-examined!
As the Ebola 'stint' spreads, there's a common factor that, the disease has no respect to any human race or for that matter anything living creature. We must therefore at this point, be extremely thoughtful on anything we either experiment with or create in a laboratory. These little germs have no sense of discrimination, such as in "all die be die"!

Do we Africans always want to be beggars and slaves to look up to the Westerners and the International community to come to our rescue? Do we understand why we Africans are not respected in the world?
It seems like we lack brains to take care of ourselves. The ebola epidemic started in 1976 in DR Congo and do we even have any laboratory or research center anywhere in Africa trying to come up with any medicine to cure ebola? We have been sitting on our butts waiting for the International community to find a cure.
Our leaders with all the natural resources in Africa cannot boast of modern hospitals nor are we ready to do away with some of our cultural practices that seem to retard our progress as a continent.
If you look at the history of ebola, it seems to rear its ugly head in countries few years after those countries have gone through civil wars or kind of internal upheavals.
Finding medicine to cure ebola is not profitable to pharmaceutical companies in the western world and that is sad to say but it is a reality that I heard on one of the programs on tv here in USA.

The pharmaceutical companies are not going to invest hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars to come up with a potent medicine for ebola if they think it is not going to be profitable. I am not a dreamer like you.
African leaders should invest in research and development of drugs that can cure diseases in Africa. We have to rely on ourselves instead of the dependency syndrome.

That was the case of ideas and plans and vision of some of our good leaders like Osagyefgo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, and of course. Moammer Ghadafi of Lybia. Ghadafi was the only leader on this earth who rendered a good services to his people in the best interest of all the people. In Lybia there was no electricity bill, in Ghadafi's time, fuel was being sold at $0.14 litre, medical attention was free for all Lybians, Education was free up to university levels, no interest rate on loans, the man who made Man-made-river in his country, yet some traitors in his country collaborated with the Western Satan to destroyed him. Now look at the situation in Lybia, everything Ghadafi did in Lybia has been destroyed by the west. You can't turn your population into slaves to toil for few people in the captals neglecting everything else. Ebola has exposed our our paterns of our so-called development in our countries.
When the money is used only to support the false life style of the few in the capital, that is the real Affrican development.

I'm with you all the way, Sir!
Somebody should also hold the feet of our African leaders to the fire as well.
It is true that if the the situation had happened in another corner of the world, the response would have been crisp and immediate.
My question though, is why do we as Africans, always have to be beggars of alms?
The continent sits on the largest and the richest of all the mineral wealth in the world, yet our corrupt leaders have turned us into beggars while they pillage and plunder the riches of the continent through mismanagement, negotiations with the western world to extract our minerals that basically leave us nothing to write home about other than the personal commissions these corrupt officials get for themselves and their cronies.
Our corrupt leaders are the root causes of these problems so while we can blame the developed all we want, the solutions to most of our problems are in the hands of our leaders.
They don't seem to comprehend the simple meaning of a "beggar having no choice".
As long as we keep thinking and making ourselves into beggars, we would always be at the mercy of the developed world.
African political leaders should invest in better heatlthcare, better education, research and science.
That's the only way to lose our 'beggar' tag and join the rest of the world as equal partners.

Yes it's true the "wealthy nations" delayed in holding of this Ebola menance, but do you really mean what you're saying?
Mr Annan, when African governments and politicians STEAL , CREAT LOOT AND SHARE the resources meant for their respective countries, and lodge in other foreign lands;
When our health facilities are crumbling, because the little money generated are squandered by the 'greedy bastards';
When filth has engulfed us because the municipalities cannot pay sanitation worker, because all the money have been looted;
When people cannot get water to drink, but tons of money have been contracted for that purpose, only for it to be looted by civil servants and politicians;
Why should we expect other people to do for us, what we must do for ourselves??
What have you Sir, said about the numerous scandals rocking Ghana, and I'm sure worse in other west Africa countries??
Remember, we deceived ourselves, into thinking that we can manage our affairs!!
Shame on us, that in the 21st Century cholera is killin hundreds of people??
It's just sad that innocent people, die because of the greediness and utter stupidity of politicians and so called Revolutionalists.
I will no begrudge any wealthy nation.

I do not expect this from Kofi Annan. last time i checked i thought there was an organization called the African Union. He should be calling that useless organization to account and not the wealthy nations. the only reason why the U.S is involved at all is because she is concerned about her own security. why should the rest of them care about Africa, we have governments as well dont we. we got to get off this dependency mentality and help our own situations. the only reason they are concerned is that at the end of the day if its not contained in african it might spill into their countries. thats what we call self preservation. Kofi Annan is a good man and has done a lot of work for the international community but sometimes i just wish he will use his influence to help his native ghana battle corruption and africa as a whole.

we need to stop blaming the white man for every thing and start taking care of our own business. all these countries with rich resources yet we've let a corrupt few run them down by enriching themselves instead of building infrastructure. where is our vision, foresight and our capability to take care of our own affairs. when is Africa going to do for Africa instead of looking for aid all the time from the white mans land? I hope this will be a wakeup call for us (Africans)to come together and forget about the rest of the world because our well being is not in their interest, it is only when they can make money off of us that they care.

Considetr the war in Iraq that Annan war against what happened?
His house was not mowed fo months and janitors were removed.
second term for UN SG was not supported by powers that be.
The war led ti ISIL, hundreds of thousands of deaths.
Consider a similar delay in Darfur, Somalia, resulted in deaths and hunger.
Now Ebola delay anything Africa no one cares but it is clear that without this continent humans would be extinct.
I hope one day western nations will take a pause and educate themselves that hey in all our luxury the resources are from Africa anyways so where lies the responsibility to the continent.
Think again everyone before its too late.

Kofi Annan, as UN Sec. Général, was just à puppet of the US and Europe. No wonder HE spends much of his time in the WEST.

Kofi Annan should shut up. What did he do for Rwandans in April, 1994? He was running the United Nations during the genocide, but he and his UN Peacekeeping Forces failed to intervene to save the lives of 850,000 Tutsis. We haven't forgotten what he did then. Why is he blaming the international community for the current Ebola outbreak? What goes around comes around.

Amb. Anna, thanks for your analysis and your comment as an African, but I would be grateful were you to look deeper into the health crisis in Africa. Many a time we Africans condemn the West whenever there is/are crises but the failure to look within ourselves and be truthful has become a deceit to ourselves. I guess you are aware of the incompetency and bad governance being practiced. Liberia for e.g. of which you are aware of, under Madam Sirleaf, whom you help selected for the people of Liberia has been categorized as the most corrupt woman leader/ president ever in the history of Africa. Since her ascendancy to power in a very small country with a population of less than 4 millions, is yet to identify and show the people what she has done since the last 9 years. The issue of governance is a social contract between the government and the people, with the people submitting their rights and resources to the government and the government meeting the basic needs of the people.
Our government other for the last nine years has failed to build the health system of Liberia. Had all of our health systems in Africa been adequately supported and built, many people would not have died. The Western gov'ts are obligated to their people and not outsiders, so they are not responsible for the failures of our gov'ts. Please come to Liberia and observe our health facilities, then you understand why some of us will not hold Western gov'ts responsible.
We are all aware of the fact that Ebola is a deadly critical virus, but had our gov’ts in Africa built our health systems and trained more health practitioners, many of your African brothers and sisters would not have died.
