The West still has Anthrax, SARS and other virus diseases. Even they still have TB. Let me also ask how many African countries have contributed in material and Human services to countries ravaged by Ebola? Who told people that almighty USA has not her own economic problems? They have other things to do too with their resources. Like many African and Developing countries, money and resources sent to the region will be chopped by politicians. Others can help West Africa but Heavens help those who help themselves. Let Africans send Human resources to the region then.

There are many of these capable African researchers abroad who are helping the same Western countries.
Let the African Governments invite and give them appropriate motivation to help Africa.
At least, I know Kufuor's Government tried it, and it did succeed. Atta Mills' Government wanted to improve that path, but the enemies of African's success eliminated him. If not elimination, let somebody stops the ambiguous reports. Libya's Gadafi had a big African research center in his agenda. He was also eliminated.

So, Africans, I hope you remember the adage "No strength can break a broom, but even a weaker strength can break a broom stick." Forgive me if my quotation is wrong.

African Union MUST speed up the unification process so that we can stop the self destruction which is caused by the barriers created by the colonial bastards.

Africans must know that, it is time for us to emancipate ourselves.We cannot rely on anybody.

Like Karikari has said, those Western countries have their own problems. Additionally, they have their own agenda.Go to Youtube and listen to Obama carefully about ebola, and you would see that Kofi Anan's voice cannot change their agenda unless all African leaders from all walks of life, including Kofi Anan,Tutu,Turkson,Palmer Buckle, Sharubutu,Mugabe, Yahya Jammeh, and other African presidents unite to form a strategy that could help curb this ebola menace and also send strong message to the world about our continental effort and feeling.

If we don't act immediately,they will kill Africans and also make money from that evil act just as it happened with HIV.

So, Ghanaian politician want new cars even if there are no roads;more cars when 1 is enough; the most luxurious when reliability and economy should be emphasised. Ghana is struggling with cholera, caused by filth. Many have died needlessly from preventable diseases because the politicians and people that are supposed to serve the nations are bent on spending monies anyhow. Containing Ebola requires aggressive infection and isolation controls. Where are the witchcraft practitioners and the mallams? cure ebola now. the white people who have been deployed are not doing anything special other than restricting the movement of those infected and also clamping down and monitoring those they have been in close contact with. Is this hard to do? we cant even do basic simple things. our leaders only love big homes and cars. africans are funny people and will forever look to the west. no matter how many cars or mansion they build, the white man will never respect you....face the fact.

Countries are poor because leaders and politicians have misused their resource.I thought when you left the UN you were going to continue to influence your African governments to stop the misappropriation of their scarce resources but you have been quiet about that. It is very easy to blame the white folks for our problems. They cannot continue to pour money and resources to failed govts who will prefer to loot and build mansions and mansions and live in opulence when their govts cannot provide good drinking water and basic necessities of life to their countries. Kofi, in this wealthy countries everybody including their presidents pay income taxes from which they give to poor countries to supplement their budgets. Now in your own country, ghana you have a constitution that exempts your president and others from paying income tax. Kofi pls speak about such issues and stop the blaming game of wealthy countries not doing enough to fight this dreadful disease. You live in a country where pastors/priest are deceiving the folks with praying to stop and cure ebola.Please redirect your energy to your own govts. Now, Kofi Annan's response on Ebola seems to 'rhyme' with the earlier charges; there's something here we must all pause to re-examined!
As the Ebola 'stint' spreads, there's a common factor that, the disease has no respect to any human race or for that matter anything living creature. We must therefore at this point, be extremely thoughtful on anything we either experiment with or create in a laboratory. These little germs have no sense of discrimination, such as in "all die be die"!

It seems like we lack brains to take care of ourselves. The ebola epidemic started in 1976 in DR Congo and do we even have any laboratory or research center anywhere in Africa trying to come up with any medicine to cure ebola? We have been sitting on our butts waiting for the International community to find a cure.

Our leaders with all the natural resources in Africa cannot boast of modern hospitals nor are we ready to do away with some of our cultural practices that seem to retard our progress as a continent.

If you look at the history of ebola, it seems to rear its ugly head in countries few years after those countries have gone through civil wars or kind of internal upheavals.

Finding medicine to cure ebola is not profitable to pharmaceutical companies in the western world and that is sad to say but it is a reality that I heard on one of the programs on tv here in USA.

The pharmaceutical companies are not going to invest hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars to come up with a potent medicine for ebola if they think it is not going to be profitable. I am not a dreamer like you.

African leaders should invest in research and development of drugs that can cure diseases in Africa. We have to rely on ourselves instead of the dependency syndrome.

My question though, is why do we as Africans, always have to be beggars of alms?
The continent sits on the largest and the richest of all the mineral wealth in the world, yet our corrupt leaders have turned us into beggars while they pillage and plunder the riches of the continent through mismanagement, negotiations with the western world to extract our minerals that basically leave us nothing to write home about other than the personal commissions these corrupt officials get for themselves and their cronies.
Our corrupt leaders are the root causes of these problems so while we can blame the developed all we want, the solutions to most of our problems are in the hands of our leaders.

They don't seem to comprehend the simple meaning of a "beggar having no choice".
As long as we keep thinking and making ourselves into beggars, we would always be at the mercy of the developed world.

African political leaders should invest in better heatlthcare, better education, research and science.

That's the only way to lose our 'beggar' tag and join the rest of the world as equal partners.

Amb. Anna, thanks for your analysis and your comment as an African, but I would be grateful were you to look deeper into the health crisis in Africa. Many a time we Africans condemn the West whenever there is/are crises but the failure to look within ourselves and be truthful has become a deceit to ourselves. I guess you are aware of the incompetency and bad governance being practiced. Liberia for e.g. of which you are aware of, under Madam Sirleaf, whom you help selected for the people of Liberia has been categorized as the most corrupt woman leader/ president ever in the history of Africa. Since her ascendancy to power in a very small country with a population of less than 4 millions, is yet to identify and show the people what she has done since the last 9 years. The issue of governance is a social contract between the government and the people, with the people submitting their rights and resources to the government and the government meeting the basic needs of the people.
Our government other for the last nine years has failed to build the health system of Liberia. Had all of our health systems in Africa been adequately supported and built, many people would not have died. The Western gov'ts are obligated to their people and not outsiders, so they are not responsible for the failures of our gov'ts. Please come to Liberia and observe our health facilities, then you understand why some of us will not hold Western gov'ts responsible.
We are all aware of the fact that Ebola is a deadly critical virus, but had our gov’ts in Africa built our health systems and trained more health practitioners, many of your African brothers and sisters would not have died.
