The death penalty clearly needs to be retained on our statutory books. Indeed, it needs to rope in and include ministers and heads of public institutions who rape the country into oblivion.
It is on record that, John Mahama has described corruption, looting, thievery, pilfering and pillaging of the national kitty as mass murder. The actions of such individuals is clearly genocide.
Ghana should actually be moving in the direction of making the death penalty a special purpose vehicle to curb officially sanctioned looting and thievery, where, when one is caught and convicted, execution takes place within a week.
Using the China model of deterrence, whose economy is reported to have eclipsed that of the US, and Ghana goes to beg for money to develop, but is eventually looted, ministers and public officials who loot and thieve the resources of China, face the death penalty, and that has even not stopped them from still engaging in those corrupt practices. There are some who slip through the cracks in spite of that level of deterrence. If ministers and public officials were to be looting and thieving the resources of their country at the rate which pertains in Ghana without the deterrence of the death penalty, China's economy would not be worth the trillions and trillions of dollars. Ghana should be looking at emulating that deterrence effect at the minimum. The death penalty is badly needed most especially for ministers of state and public officials in Ghana. There needs to be a special provision for such culprits and robustly pursued.

If the DEATH PENALTY is what will scare our people and teach them not to steal public funds, then it should be implemented.
However, for case of murder and other hard core crimes, there may be a way to sentence a person to hard labor with restitution to the family of the deceased or victim. There is no use killing a murder criminal for revenge only, and if we can make him work say in a productive factory or farm and the income given to care for the children and family of the person he/she murdered.
This is a common sense pragmatic way of managing our society with social justice. just abolishing the death penalty because others, Western or other nations have done so does not make sense to me. Let us act with reason and cost as factors. People in prison must be made to work for their care and maintenance. That is the way to manage a society, with pragmatic reasoning and financial planning considerations.

Ghana may need to abolish the death penalty, BUT not in this crucial time when looting the government coffers has assumed an alarming dimension.

I am absolutely in favour of the death penalty and whoever is thinking of getting rid of it in Ghana can rightly be termed as an appeaser of murderers.Just come to the UK and you realize the ease with which murders are committed and this is
all because the law is soft on those who kill .Murdering has become a sport in the UK and most of those who kill and are released become serial killers. In the Bible and the Koran the death penalty is prescribed for those who take the lives of their fellow human beings.Abolishing the death penalty is never the hallmark of civilization:it is rather a lack of respect for the protection of human lives.
have to follow what the Bible and the Koran tell us to do.

I think all Ghanaian leaders have failed the country misearbly with the high crime rate especially in the last 20 years. Where on earth will someone be sentenced to death and after 15 years the person is released and now a pastor, I am talking about G-man. Our presidents need to stop giving amnesty to criminals every year. Its a shame and I don't think criminals need to have that idea that if they rob or kill someone one day the president will give them amnesty. Let the criminals rot in hell.
