I think you could make up the one year easily by extending the school day by 30 - 60 minutes. The problem with our school system is not so much the number of years, but more so the curriculum. Why do students have to take so many unnecessary subjects? We need to focus on the needed subjects and not the fluff. The educationist should review the school curriculum and conduct necessary assessment tests starting from primary school to see if students are grasping the basics. We just push students through the system without a proper assessment of students and even the teachers. You either retrain teachers of non performing schools and students or get teachers/principals fired to improve assessment scores.

The crafters of that hokum, blabla and mumbo jumbo idiocy of reducing the high school years have failed the high school students and the country as a whole—for quality & competent employees—and here is why:
1) So long as Ghana uses foreign language (English) as official language for teaching, in the courts, in parliament, in banking, securities investment and virtually all aspects of Ghanaian life, shortening the school year was, and still is, a VERY DUMB IDEA. English is a subject by itself and not everybody is good at it and when your ass is bad with English, so will a student have problem with the other subjects, even including Maths and the sciences.
2) Where the hell are these "half-baked" and over produced graduates going to find employment in Ghana? The architects of that foolishness didn't think through carefully about the consequences of that huge mistake.
3) Lastly, most of African students gaining admissions into universities, colleges and other higher learning institutions in the western world such as the U.S.A, England, Canada, Australia and even in Germany and France "have to go through an embarrassing “remedial aka catch-up aka tutorials”, etc., to be competent enough to compete with their host countries’ students. So, why not school them well enough at home to avoid the cost and embarrassment of re-engagement in high school stuff?
Well, my own educational time in Ghana was the good old 5-year secondary education, 2-years of 6th form and marching straight forward to the universities, if the student is qualified by stated measures.
Even with that type of education, many MPs, Judges, Lawyers, Teachers, Civil servants, etc., etc., STILL HAVE MAJOR PROBLEMS with English in writing, speaking and reading. So, Negro, why reduce the high school education from 4 years to 3 years? Can you show us any positive results!!

I was a product of the 3 year system and I met many people from other countries that had the same 3-year education. I was able to compete effectively with those people to the highest level of education in my field. The only area I lacked was computer knowledge, but I was able to quickly bridge that gap once I had access to the resources here.

Rawlings destroyed it and quickly sent his children to school abroad. New it has become a ping pong between NDC- 3yrs and NPP -4yrs. Don't you guys have any sense in your head to realize that the problem is not the number of years the kids spend in school but that the teachers teaching these kids are either not good or they are not doing their work. How come the private schools are not effected by your adhoc solution. They still perform very well be it 3yrs or 4yrs. Prof. Djagmah you can keep these kids in school for 10 extra years and trust me the results will still be the same. We as a country lack vision and leadership. Do not look too far for a solution to our SHS problems. Just go study what private schools like Tema parents association and Achimota school are doing right and apply it to the public system. Then get the teachers to teach and stop this 3yrs, 4yrs nonsense.

I am disappointed with Prof. Djagmah. Why is he and his colleagues behaving, the way they are doing? Why is that we have accepted that Primary school is 6 yrs but when it comes to secondary school there is so much confusion: is the JHS part of secondary education or not? The total number of pre-tertially years is 12 years; being 6 years Primary and six years secondary. This is the standard for most countries in the world: why this confusion in Ghana. Are children of today so stupid that they can't go from Primary 6 to Secondary school as it was before the introduction of the Reform? We have been told the Middle School system has been abolished but it seems there is an attempt to bring the system back through the back door. If the JHS is part of the 6 years secondary school why not merge the two instead of making Primary education 9 years and secondary education 3 years or 4 years. Please Prof tell us the truth and stop this confusion.

Rob, our SSS quality is not low because of the 3 years, it may still be considered low by the nations you mentioned even if it is still 4 years.
The main reasons could be the areas our SSS school curriculum covers or the primitive descrimination policies of the schools of the said nations.
There are students in GHANA with the 3 years SSS certificates that did well in many foreign varsities than many students who had 4 years high school in the nations you mentioned.
Basically our curriculum is solid comparatively when entry to foreign varsities are in question. However, any foreign university has right over any foreign students when it comes to admission.
Therefore refusing a SSS certificate holder from entering into varsity in those nations could be a form of descrimination based on language proficiency in reference to ORAL communication difficulties during lectures.
Inshort this does not mean our SSS 3 years is of low quality. I hope I have coached you good. Have a nice way.

During our time if you gained an admission into an American University with good A level scores, they admitted you into the second year not the first year. It took only one wee smoking idiot with his cockroach sycophants to destroy the only good thing that Ghana had, and that was a torch-bearer on the African continent. Zimbabwe education system, they say, is one of the best in Africa because Mugabe copied it from Ghana. NDC Mmmoafo

The situation in the deprived rural community is the main cause of the problem that worries the confused Prof Djagmah, and thus his approach should have been how can the nation help the rural communities in relation to education.
This could call the attention of all the people in higher positions with great concern of our citizens' welfare of the nation to come together to help with ideas that could motivate teachers who work in the deprived rural areas with special compensation or iincentives so that the rural areas may have the needed quality of education that they deserve.
The prof should understand that quality education does not come from the longer one stays in school but instead the education provided and the readiness of the students to learn.
With this simple clarity I visualised the Professor as a confused man who has failed to face facts but had taken the political line of bigotry in his infamous decision which is irrelevant momently.
Once again the Prof should not try to bring unneccessary competition of foolish ideas to disturb the present 3 years of the SHS. What you and your colleagues of the NPP know is only changing of NAMES- SSS to SHS.
Even some of the NAMES of books in the JSS were changed but the stuff were the same. What madness and cost is this? You guys should leave Ghana educattion free if you can not advice better.
Why are you not supporting those who are questioning why our students write SHORTHAND in their examinations, and see how we can motivate them to stop that since that could destroy their power over English language?
Prof Djagmah, why do not you encourage the education in Ghana to look to the areas of science and technology and support such schools so that our nation can have a real base of taking off in the areas of development.
Mr Professor 3 years is OK. Donot disturb the education in Ghana with your political mindset of confusion since with our 3 years SHS we are doing well here in overseas.

Do Djagmah make Sense ! You extent to one year to help less privileged Schools to the detriment of one year of waste of majority more privilege Schools. And also stressing the financial capability of parents. You see how officials who are supposed to know better, make decisions without a well thought through simple Common Sense approach to resolve issues in Ghana !
In my opinion, this moronic idea of one
year extension to benefit the less privileged Schools could easily be resolved by extension of man hours in those Schools. For example Classes could Start early by one hour to close at a extended time of half an hour late,or the same time as always .Simple ! Whichever way is convenient to both teachers and students. That's the common sense approach and the way forward.
This Country Ghana,is a pathetic story !
The nation cannot even fix the number of years acceptable to all and sundry a Student should spend at the Senior High School level.Which nation in this World has School schedule problems. Only in Ghana. It shows how sick and confused the leadership has been to change things because, one is the boss and has the authority to do so. I think the change from 5 yrs to 3yrs was long overdue, and was the right thing to do by the then Rawlings NDC administration, considering the fact that students go through Junior high school. Why should it be politicized by Kuffour's NPP gov't ? Again, both those who went to Sec Sch/High Sch for 5 years plus 2 yrs of Sixth Form and the present 4yrs or 3yrs of High School; What innovation or inventions have they made to improve the living Conditions of the Black African, either than to come out of School to add more problems to existing ones to impoverished their own people.
By the way how far did the “Entebbe Mathematics"which replaced the Algebra reached ! Anyway.
