Stop this bigotted crusade. The situation and the rate of death has not changed much since Kufuor and Mills were the Presidents of Ghana.
I would agree that the conditions at Home might have influenced the decision of many to live longer overseas. But that is not peculiar to only Mahama's Presidency.
Our various Governments have failed to build Ghana enough to offer the comforts many look for abroad. If only our Governments would be more diligent, and plan better to induce creation of better jobs, Ghanaians would stay at home more, and only go abroad for short vacations.

I share the grief and pain of our brothers and sisters in Hamburg. May God receive the souls of the departed. Having said that, I think Apraku has summed it up. I totally agree with him. Hypertension (that silent killer), resulting from the factors Apraku has enumerated, is decimating the Ghanaian population over there. What is needed is education. Those who don't have nkrataa and facing difficulties finding decent/good jobs must think of coming back home. For those with nkrataa and are living good lives, they must check their life styles- drinking, womanising, eating junk food, not having enough rest and eating heavy food (banku, fufu, kenkey) very late in the night, marital conflict, etc, are a recipe for disaster. People need to go for regular medical check ups- especially for Hypertension, diabetes, high Cholesterol, prostrate cancer, etc. You can live in Norway or Canada, with all the best medical facilities, but if you don't take care of your self, you'll die young. I live in a country in Southern Africa, working for a prestigious university, and I make sure my family and I go for thorough medical test every year. It's expensive but if you have Medical Aid, (equivalent of the moribund NHIS in Ghana) then you don't pay much. Let's keep a healthy lifestyle to increase our days on earth. And let's live within our means, avoiding competition.
This is my piece of advice to all and sundry.

It is just one out of the myraid contributors to unexpected deaths Technology and for that matter, medicine has liberated mankind to some extend, from the limits of biology. The ideal for mankind is to have longer health-span but not longer life-span. The latter is supported by dispensation of drugs and other therapeutic regimen. But I know someone who out of sheer ignorance refuses to take a tablet prescribed by his Doctor thinking the conventional or western medicine is hazardous to Africans. The ageing sicknesses such as cardiovascular blockages and all its ripple effects follow because of ignorance. Everyone wants to build a showy villa on hillside with piecemeal jobs we do in Europe seeking stress here and at home. Let live within our means with much less stress.

Overwork ,lack of exercise ,unhealthy working practices such as night shift work( which are associated with illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes and stroke) are to blame for the increased ill health and death of Ghanaians living abroad. Many Ghanaians out of a real desire to help relatives back home have paid a terrible price in terms of their health.Others overwork because of their desire to build huge mansions back home. All of this leads to unbelievable amounts of stress on their minds and bodies. The worst part of all this is that they often sacrifice so much for relatives back home who show no appreciation whatsoever or who either condemn them for not doing enough. I know of many well meaning Ghanaians who have been repeatedly swindled by relatives back home in Ghana. These relatives either exaggerate their needs or make fictitious needs in order to extort overworked and exhausted Ghanaians living abroad .Our relatives living abroad need to slow down and think carefully about the damage they are doing to themselves physically, mentally and spiritually. What good is it to them if they suffer serious illness or even die from overwork? Let us use some common sense

Also most of the players that caused untimely death among Ghanaians in foreign lands are fake illiterate pastors and prophesies. These so called prophets too are illegals and only way to survive is to lie to the people by creating stories to dent ones image. Irony is our illiterate brethren fall for them and put their whole believes/lives on these so called men of God. I bet most illegal Ghanaians abroad would prefer to meet a man of God to the Doctor when sick for a cure. When you do that not only do you abuse the illness you killed yourself by relying on an illiterate prophets also seeking what you too are dreaming; greener pastures.
How long can one hide and also survive on a menial job in a well structured economy.
Illiteracy will expose you but you'll keep running, panting always in fear of deportation and that alone is a timely killer.
What sort of entertainment do Ghanaians have abroad; Funerals, funerals, church, Adore, baby shower soccer and finally Azonto. All these come with our heavy carbo food and eat very late at night. Go home late only to wake up at 5am to go carry on the cleaning job.
Ghanaians are supposed to be first Africans that settled in Germany. Leaders of the Ghanaian community should form a union to demand every protection from their German government be it education, jobs and other social services.
If my history is right and during the Berlin wall, Ghanaians played a major role in building Germany. They were used as a substitute for the east, thus all the jobs abandoned by the east Germans were done by our Ghanaian brethren. That said, Ghanaians in Germany have every right to tap into the country's resources to upgrade themselves.
Let's not the Ghanaian community in Germany be identified by their funerals ,church and hard work alone but by their ability to have a voice in running the country. That alone will ease the fear of deportation and all those illegal immigrants will breath a sire of fear, panic and untimely death.

The unbridled ambition to be materially rich at all cost is what is killing ghanaians living outside of Ghana especially in europe. This is a problem more prevalent among the uneducated ones who believe that the surest way to ensure their financial safety when old is to acquire material riches especially houses. They work ceaselessly ,eat the cheapest food and disregard their health. In the end their bodies become exhausted and they die from sudden heart attacks.Ghanaians in the diaspora should know that acquiring material wealth should not be prioritized above good health. Why acquire all the riches you want and suddenly die for somebody else to
enjoy it? The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 2;21 'You work for something with all your wisdom, knowledge and skill and then you have to leave it all to someone who hasn't had to work for it.It is useless and it isn't right'.Yes when you work hard to acquire wealth you must live longer to enjoy it.Having good health to live longer should be the priority of ghanaians in the diaspora.

Working more than necessary even when they are sick, eat the cheapest and the unhealthiest food. Never will you see them balancing the diet with vegetables and fruits. Only depending on fufu as much as that, some eat early in the morn, get back home at 12am and eat fufu again and straight to bed. No time for digestion, no sport or fitness, no happy life for them. Its a pity how they put their health afront wealth. I can go on and on but we only need to pray and change our lifestyles. Simple!

The myth of Africans living a better life outside of Africa, is the cause of premature deaths and unnecessary stress experienced by Africans living in foreign countries.
Wherever one goes in this world, one would find Africans being discriminated against, from the Americas through Europe and Asia, racism, exploitation and various forms of discrimination are levied against our people.
In the US, the racist press always report on the high rate of depression, heart attacks, strokes and other stress related illnesses that causes premature deaths in the African and Hispanic/mostly African population, what they don't say, is that naked European racism and other covert forms of discrimination against the African population, contributes to this catastrophe in the African communities.
I am a living example of an African who've lived most of his fe in a white ruled country, (USA,) and I swear on my dearly beloved mother's grave, that I have returned to Ghana 11/2 years ago, and I am one billion times happier in Ghana than I could ever be in the USA, because racism and all of the nuances of European savagery are non existent in Ghana/Africa.
All praises to my Almighty African Ancestors and my beloved African family/masses, for the cuddling and comfort that I am privileged to enjoy at home in Africa, I hope to remain in Africa till the end of my life, because there is no place like HOME!

What about the good things, even in our own country or even our hometowns there is discrimination, this family is that and all the tribalism going on in Ghana, what do you have to say about it. The truth is people are not getting their priorities right, i live in England and if you go to the continent to visit you will understand why they are dying, their diet is a big fat problem period. Some of them will send money home for building houses and how much do they earn, just pittens so after that there's nothing left for good food. They also have the time and money to bleach, both men and women want to look like the white people and they drink heavily aswell so just conclude.

I told the manager that I want to continue to work for him and he agreed. He like my work as a hardworking Ghanaian but reluctant to raise my wages. The last time they did a general increment some months ago was only 50 cents. All the blacks in that company are moving slowly like a chameleon while, the obroni high school graduates are rising rapidly. Most Ghanaians in Europe are living on benefits instead of working. If somebody claims for incapacitated benefit, they earn more money and in return have to be on medication to qualify for that money. The kind of medication given to these guys? Only God knows what!
Ghanaians should learn to work hard and contribute to society in whatever country they live in. Most Ghanaians are motivated by get rich quick mentality.
Again, majority of them do not take their health condition seriously. They will send all their money to Ghana instead of leading a quality life style.
some Ghanaians will not even pay for house heating and result in a crude way of warming the house by filling hot water in a bottle to warn the quilt cover.
Ghanaians need some education to understand the fact money is not everything.

I look at three things that are contributing to the early demise of our people abroad.
1. Diet & Eating habits - the food we are used to is meant for tropical countries and yet we live on the same diet in cold countries. Lots of meat and lack of vegetables. Because of shift work, we have very bad eating habits, i.e. eating at odd times and retiring to bed soon after.
2. Exercise - we lack the culture of physical exercise. We hardly exercise
and we are proud of being over weight because we think that is a sign of good living. Our women are the worst offenders in category.
Lack of Rest - After a long week of work and instead of resting, we devote the whole of Saturday to funerals (both local and imported). We move from one event to another throughout the whole night. Early Sunday morning, we are rushing to Church which normally lasts all the way into the later part of the afternoon. We come home and spend the rest of the day getting ready for the coming week's work. We even hardly have time for ourselves as couples. The pressure on us from home to acquire at least, a landed property is also a contributor to our heavy work schedules. Some doing two to three jobs in order to fulfil the dream. We live in two countries at the same time and absorbing pressures from both countries.

Those in doubt should watch some these UGLY episodes on international news portals like Aljezeera and BBC for confirmation.

My friend, in those days, they have to write letter which takes about two weeks to get to you. You spend one week deciding your response. Your response takes another two weeks to get to them. By then, the family departed had already been buried.
Nowadays, they call you even before the person closes his or her eyes. The following day, they are expecting the money through Western Union.
The situation is very serious. However, I believe there is a way out. One does not need to meet every request or demand directed your way. Most of them think those living abroad are fools and they have no use for their hard earned monies. Just take care of your parents, that is, if they are still alive. The next batch are your children, if any of them is living in Ghana. You may care about your grandchildren too and the list stops there. As for brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces etc. they should be relegated to the background. Only take along gifts for them any time you are going down.
Always remember, "man came to do some but not to do everything."

Good to bring this issue out and it's all about eating healthy, exercise and staying out of alcohol, cigarettes & drugs, having enough rest, going for routine medical check-ups. You do not need to be ill before get blood checks etc.Get thorough medical check-ups done every year to know how your system is working, the organs; kidney, lungs, liver, heart, thyroids, spleen and the rest.Knowing all these will inform you of what to eat, what to avoid. Even there are HIV positive folks who are living, because they know what to do to boost their immune systems. And let's know the causes of those deaths and people will learn from them.A finger of garlic a day is good, eat more greens and fruits. Fufu, banku and other heavy foods should not be eaten after 3pm.Get to the gym if it's cold outside.Superstition should be discouraged.

The writer of this thought-provoking article,Mr. Desmond John Beddy, must be commended, for letting the world know how Ghanains are dying in their numbers prematurely in Hamburg, Germany-far away from our Home Country,Ghana.
However, his analysis and conclusions or suggestion that it is partly due to the Ghanaians perchant and unexamined love for funerals in Hamburg and the inappropriate traditional dressing especially, in the winter time may be the course. I do not think he has done any scientific research and have imperical evidence to conclude that way!
I do not wholly support his assertion
As a seasoned Journalist, and the CEO of TopAfric - a Ghanaian FM staion based in Hamburg, I expected him to have delved deep and research extensively to bring out some of these factors helping to send Ghanaians into early deaths in Hamburg. Let us consider some of these factors-loneliness, pressure from relatives and friends from home, joblessness, broken homes and broken marriages, divorces, worries and thinkages, lack of proper and staying documents after long tedious attempts. Not having staying permits sometimes make some Ghanaians who fall sick become afraid to seek medical help when they become sick, high blood pressure,Hypertension, heart and kidney attacks/described by some as silent killers,et
We are all aware that, traditions and customs die hard. Once a Ghanaian in Ghana, always a Ghanaian any where. It is a well known fact that,Ghanaians cherish their tradition and customs. Thus, they observe them wherever, they found themselves, hence these funeral celebrations in the Diaspora.
It is not only Ghanaians in Hamburg who observe these traditions in the Diaspora. This goes on in other cities in Germany do the same. In the USA,UK,Australia,Japan,Israel, etc. Ghaians reside they do the same.
Calling on Ghana Embassy Berlin,The Ghana Union Hamburg, and our Traditional Chiefs put their feet down and coordite or regulate all social activities in the Ghanaian Community in Hamburgi especially funerals celebrations,is not the answer. First of all,let us ask ourselve-are the Chieftaincy and the Ghana Union as Ghanaian Institutions in Hamburg well funtioning and influential.
We collectively have to find a way of celebrating funerals through town halls education, sacrifices and compromises. Definitely, Ghanaians cannot compromise with their observations of our tradition and culture whereever we find ourselves. Surely and truly, our Ghanaian tradition lives on.

Thanks for this nice article and information. To position oneself strategically is very important, when living in a foreign country. The weather and conditions in Germany as we all know is different from Ghana. Most Ghanians do not dress according to the weather.Wearing cloth and sandals in winter at temperatures below 0 degrees celcius is very common in Germany among Ghanians during funerals. These imported funerals are really a waste of resources, time and energy.Sports activities, going to gym is not our life.Although the streets here are paved with routes marked for bikes,it is hardly to see our people on bikes, compare to the natives of Germany.I have been going to gym for the past ten years, from fifty people who come to the gym you can sometimes see only one black guy,not to mention the women. The fact is Germany have one of the best health systems in the world. This is a country where you will be treated for your injuries after an accident before even your document is requested.Ignorance is killing us,for life is not work, church and come home to sleep. We enjoy sometimes only two months of sunshine in the year, without sport you are lost in this freezing weather. The so called good food is a killer, execessive intake of hot drinks, broken homes and families which is a results of some of the values we carry along from home.Men has sold their birth rights, because of taking responsibilty upon themselves. They will like to have children ,but want the state to care for them,in short they are not the biological fathers.
Our women then become fathers who then comes to the conclusion that she needs no man if the husband is not prepared to care for the home.On the other side of the story, our women become so powerful due to the good laws in most western contries to protect them from abuse etc, take advantage of the law into their hands and sometimes call the police for a good father, who take the full responsibility of the family to be driven away from home.our impatience and insatiable deed are the cause of many broken families.A man is not a pillow to rely on,and if the woman get into debt the husband is responsible,if she gets a fortune she should bring it to her extended family. These evil teaching has gone deep into our subconscious mind and has therefore mentally taken roots. In short i will advice the numerous churches in Hamburg to educate their members on good health and what life is all about ,instead of always teaching from the historical standpoint of the bible.Teachings from Oheneba Barima lessons on CDs can help in this direction. There is no one to help but oueselves. We all must be content with what we have, and life will be a blessing

Germany and much of Europe does boast of a higher Health Care system than most of the world. But our African brothers are ignorant of these two killer diseases in Europe than in the USA.We are prone to such diseases more than the whites. Then,we have the tropical oils, "abe nkwan ne nkati nkwan."They are high cholesterol that we tend to eat at late dinner with no exercises or gym workouts, thereby clogging our arteries.
Another seriou issue in Europe,is the easy access to liquor. We know the African mentality of misuse over everything.Yes,when we go shopping, these gin, whiskey and brandy are sitting on the shelves, begging us to steal them!Yes,over weekends,we tend to consumer more liquor than our proverbial Ghanaian "painters and Train drivers!Yes we put our kidneys and liver in overdrive, leading to cirrhosis of the liver.
There are some who yearn to earn the accolades of being termed, alcoholics. All these coupled with bad living, some have never checked their HBP or sugar levels nor cdl.
Even your car,needs checkups!How much more you,onipa dasani,hello!

Doing funerals here cannot be said to be a contributing factor to the unusually high death rate in the Ghana community in Hamburg. Funeral celebration has been part of our culture and it will continue to be with us wherever we find our selves.
From my scientific Background I will say the factors contributing to These deaths are 1. Poor diet and eating Habit. How many Ghanaians here eat an apple, banana or a fruit a day? There is a saying that an apple a day Keep you away from the doctor. This is not the place to write extensively on our eating habit. 2. Sports and exercise in the Ghana communities are non- existent. Apart from a few Boys who organise yearly Football matches we vitually do no exercise. Our daily Routine has been to wake up at 5 am, run to catch our Train or bus and work until 5 pm. We arrive back around 6 pm eat our dinner without vegetables and fruit and sit and immediately sit down to our Akan or Nigerian films and go to bed at 10 pm. 3. Our attitude towards health care is the worst. Oftentimes most of us spent ages on the phone talking to/and or praying with Pastors in Ghana. It is only when the situation become worse do we seek medical Attention. I have had to counsel people of taking their medication especially those on Hypertention and Diabetes. A lot of us just stop taking their medicine because according to them they have taken too much of it. Some even argue that taking hypertention medication will affect their sexual drive. So they choose to rather enjoy their sex than keeping a healthy heart.4. Stress of work, Family in Ghana and Family (marital) here, the insecurity of our children's future here are all contributing factors. As it was stated in the article and the contribution from someone from Berlin some of them were found dead at home which could only be attributed to Heart conditions or massive stroke as result of untreated hypertention or Diabetes. Most of the deaths are from liver cancer and kidney failure. For Ghanaians because of our exposure to Hepatitis it is not surprising that some of us are dying from liver related diseases. But to be blunt most of the liver cancers and kidney problems are the result of the heavy drinking habit of Ghanaians. We drink excessively.
We have to approach this problem scientifically and educate ourselves instead of looking at witchcraftcy, juju and funerals. There is no conspiracy theory anywhere it is our attitude which is killing us.

What a govt Ghanaians elected barely two years ago? Or did they? All the gains made by especially the Kuffuor govt wiped away by a govt awash in millions of US dollars and Ghana cedis squandered or embezzled on stuff and personalities in which the average Ghanaian had no share whatsoever! This is a govt that was prepared to take a loan to purchase sanitary pads for school girls (and leave the school boys nothing). Dr. Kwame Nkrumah took a loan and contracted Parkinson Howard company to build the Tema port. Ghanaians still benefit from the Port of Tema, isn't it? That is visionary! What vision does John Mahama and his crooks and thieves in govt have for Ghana? This is a govt that hasn't been able to pay workers for more than three years. This is a govt that cannot provide regular electricity and water and people who are compelled to sleep in darkness for 3-day stretches. Mosquitoes are always happy and go feasting on sleeping people in the darkness with the resultant myriad cases of malaria! Not to talk of armed robbers killing, robbing and raping unsuspecting Ghanaians while darkness engulfs the country. This is a govt that cannot pay garbage contractors to clear the filth on the streets of Accra, leading to cholera outbreaks in which many innocent people have perished. This is a govt that unloads heavy burdens on even those working (excuse me, the thousands of unemployed graduates notwithstanding) by increasing fuel prices at break-neck speeds that affect the real costs of food, transportation, and general living standards.Isn't it a crying shame that Koo writes about people going hungry daily? What is wrong with this Mahama guy? This is a govt that still doesn't give a damn but delights in lying to Ghanaians about the future of Ghanaians and offers false and empty hope to Ghanaians. This is a govt that cheats on elections.... the list could go on ad infinitum!! The bottom line is that Ghanaians elected (or did they?) this govt. They must reap the results of their actions. It's a simple matter of "cause and effect". As Rawlings said, "every nation deserves the govt it gets". "Where there is no vision, the people perish", said the Word of God. Maybe Ghanaians would learn something from this and vote more wisely next time. Recall the "necklaces" of Ghanaians during the era of Rawlings and PNDC regimes? All the starvation and premature aging of many Ghanaians and premature deaths in those years? Oh, mother Ghana! A country God has blessed with every imaginable blessings on this earth and still dying in the thousands of poverty and self-inflicted wounds! God save Ghana.

Professor, thanks for your write up. I am always annoy with Mahama as if I am not from the north. It is terrible listening to peoples predicaments every day. He has wiped out all the gains Kufour brought to the country. Some Nigerian friends here in USA had planned to visit Ghana just to see the Ghana that Nigerians were praising and recommending to families and friends to use as a second home due to booming economy. Mahama is just talking and nothing to show for. If I am home during the 2016 elections, all my family in the Upper West will vote NPP. In fact I have started canvassing for votes for Akufo Addo. He will make a far better president than this Mahama who is only interested in traveling than working. I always ask myself that if the whites were lazy, would they have built their country for him to come and enjoy as in New York?

They could be dying from food contimanants since a greater number of Ghanaians may be buying their food from the Tropical Food stores. I once went to a tropical food store to buy Fufu powder. I saw a big mouse running through the store. When I complained the owner went wild and extremely angry with me.
I went out of the store and called Food and Drug Administration and filed a complain. The following day a representative showed up and also saw two mice. The store was rightly shutdown and before he opened the store, all food items were thrown away. The store was fumigated and was subject to periodic inspection. His business has boomed because other people felt his food is safe for consumption. He later called to apologise and thank me.
Please we have to change our thought process and make serious changes to lifestyles. I did change mine, I am 70 years old and still on the road.
Diet and periodic visit to the Doctor will solve most of the problems.
Let's all declare April as Annual physical exam's month. See your Doctor

The ascendancy of death rate among ghanaians in diaspora is due to many of the reasons given in this forum.
However, to get to the bottom of the causes for the shocking revelation, i would advocate that those of us that have information about the cause of deaths should let is know on this forum and any opportunity we get in the future to share our views on the topic.
Knowing how many people died out of say heart attack, sugar related complications, stroke, high blood pressure or undetermined causes will be very helpful for us to make an educated conclusion and for people to advise themselves
QUESTION:
Is it true that the toxix chemical used to preserve dead bodies ( FOLMADEHYDE) is the main preservative for dry fish and bush meat sold at africa markets?
If not what preservative is used to preserve all the meats and dry fish imported from Ghana and other African countries?
This is just a question.
Does any one have an answer?

I will advise Ghanaians in Europe and not only Hamburg to watch out what they eat. They should avoid taking fatty foods and also try to eat on time. The oil intake should be reduced drastically.
They should not eat fufu at late hour. They should not eat too much meat, creamy foods, etc. Rather, they should eat a lot of fruits.
In Europe oil is cheaper, meat or chicken, eggs etc. so they don't take any measures when they are consuming them.
They should stop duping other people for their monies because of them may not also forgive you but will make sure that he/she will kill you by cursing with the rivers in Ghana or by any possible means. They should desist from these bad habits.
A word to a wise is enough.

Trying to impress foolish relatives back home has been the undoing of many Ghanaains living abroad.Relatives living back in Ghana will never be able to appreciate the incredible amounts of stress relatives living abroad have to put up with- and this applies to both professionals and those doing menial jobs.My advice to Ghanaians working day and night abroad is that they should spare a moment and also try to live a decent life NOW because tomorrow may be too late.Don't pay any attention to lazy critical relatives back home. Don't take any notice of their tendency to compare you with the "achievements " of other Ghanaians living abroad. These lay relative all too often can't even look after themselves yet are the very first to criticise you severely.

As many mentioned here, exercise is one of the key ingredients of maintain good health. I live here in the US but I do observe that a lot of Africans here do not exercise at all and their diets are usually poor-more red meat, salty/sugary food, fatty/fried food, very little fruit/vegetable consumption.
Recently, some friends came to my house and I asked them when was the last time anyone of them walked a distance of about 100m or two blocks. to my surprise, none of them was able to remember the last time he walked that far. I also observed that African women tend to be even fatter than the men.
I am forty-one years old but I do exercise on a regular basis and also keep an eye on what I consume. Most people here even think I am about seven to ten years younger.
What I find interesting is that some of my brethren are even proud of their fat bellies. :))

let us not loose focus, all these Ghanaians when they travel, instead of adjusting and eating the salad, and healthy foods will rely on the so called African market. These foods shipped from Ghana are sometimes stored in bad conditions,no expiration date, akrante nam, smoked fish, rotten beef and fish, toxic palm nut oil and etc. just to name a few.
all these foods are excellent when they are fresh, but it ceases to be fresh when the so called African markets in the diaspora in the name of profit, sell rotten foods, causing premature death and cancer. Don't blame this on which craft and others, they exist, but the underlying cause is Ghanaians cannot resist staying away from their local food.

In all countries, it is well-established that poorer people have substantially shorter life expectancies and more illnesses than the rich — inequalities that cannot be explained by differences in health care or by personal health behaviours. Studies have shown that these disparities are associated with structural differences, such as income, employment and working conditions, housing, education, food security, social inclusion and the environment — what we now consider the social determinants of health.

During the good days of Kuffuor regime when real standards of living improved for Ghanaians, a lot of Ghanaians in the diaspora actually did return home. What happened? Many returnees were robbed and killed by armed robbers, a lot more saw their financial investments disappear and they had no choice but flee back to the relative comfort and safety of life overseas. Truth be told, if life in Ghana were that attractive now, why are millions of Ghanaians complaining about the astronomical cost of food, housing, transportation and the general cost of living, lack of utilities, extremely high unemployment and many more? Read Koo's contribution in this forum in which he told a stark truth: Ghanaians at home are dying in the thousands too because of poverty, hunger and starvation, lack of adequate health care, hopeless prospects for the future and so on. This empty slogan of "going back to help develop the country" won't wash with us in the diaspora anymore while people in the most corrupt govt in Ghana under Mahama enjoy subsidies on fuel charges for using tax payer funded vehicles that are used for funerals on weekends and whenever, free housing, free allowances and so on! You talk about "potential?" What is the cold hard reality in Ghana now? Ghana sells crude oil. Ghana exports cocoa, timber, and many minerals mined from the earth in Ghana. Why has the Ghanaian basic currency fallen so much under this Mahama regime? Even our foreign exchange reserves have been depleted by Mahama's govt. What is left is a mountain of debt that future generations have to pay. This is the "idey bee keke" guy who squandered Ghc6 billion on his election campaign. Not too long ago, Mahama used our money to purchase SUVs for paramount Chiefs while there was no money for NHIS or health care. Where is the potential when every imaginable group of workers in Ghana cries out for justice and fairness for monetary compensation? Not too long ago, medical doctors went on strike. Railway workers went on strike. Nurses went on strike because govt failed to pay their wages for three years in a row. That's just a very miniscule sample of workers who contribute to Ghana's socio-economic development. Charity they say, begins at home and ends in public. If the Ghanaians in Ghana are crying, why would any wise Ghanaian abroad, go home and face this hell on earth in Ghana? Better to stay overseas, work and die here! Where is the potential for development in Ghana's corrupt and useless govt? You must be dreaming in la-la land!

Hey! Stop all these arguments. Ghanaians dying in Hamburg are or is nothing strange.
I live in Hamburg and l am awere of those deaths but its nothing strange. Think of a town Hamburg with about 15000 (Fifteen thousend) Ghanaians and we have been here since the sixties. If 24 of us die within 9 months, its nothing strange to me.
I was recently in Ghana and in my small town of about 4000 (four thousend) inhabitants, we burry about 10 dead persons at the end of every month which is called in my town "Funerasl Week". This statictics means that ninety (90) people die in my town of 4 thousend inhabitants in 9 months compared to 24 in Hamburg.
Who can tell me, in which town of about 15 000 inhabitants doesn`t burry 24 death in 9 months?
Every fetishious assumption of inported funerals or Rivers in Hamburg being the cause are childish.
You can only suggest that we should stop our burrial customs.
And again, some of these deaths are from people who just crossed the Mediterranean Sea with Boat
to Italy and maneged to Hamburg being very popular to Ghanaians, sick, weary and without papers, become unconscious at Busstops but when the police and ambulance hurry them to the Hospitals and they die, it is recorded by the author of these message that Ghanaians are dying in Hamburg. Yes people die in Hamburg as everywhere. Hospitals and Medical treatments are free here in Hamburg and Germany.

We have imposed too much stress on ourselves. We want to build mansions at home so work , work and work. We have to balance that with a healthy, balanced diet. Sadly that is not the case . We eat mainly carbohydrates...fufu, banku, yams, etc. Few Ghanaian have the habit of eating fruits on a regular basis. Not many are used to eating green salad.
The protein in our food is also destroyed through too much cooking.
Too much carbohydrates and also salt in our food leads to cardiovascular diseases. Then is the rise in Typ 2 diabetes partly through obesity and lack of exercise.
Friends, my old ma lived in a very litte village in Ghana but was able to make it to 90 with the simple villager's diet!!
To sum up: Let us avoid stress, eat healthy diet, strive to live a righteous life and leave the rest to the OLD MAN ABOVE.

If only we would heed the advice of the Lord. My humble opinion is that He did not mean we should not bury them, but we should not spend so much money , time and energy on the dead than the living as it appears to be the case with the Akans.
There is no scientific link to this-- it appears though that the same way we love to bury our dead, so also does death also seem to love our company.

Ghanaian community is the most largest among all the black communities in Germany and as in Europe respectively. The Germans themselves wears black to cemeteries and to funeral gatherings,,,they call it (Bei sitzung). Apart from moslem in their respective doctrines all the other religions wears black to burry mankind...so the fact here wearing our traditional clads and clothes is not a fact...Also building houses seperately by marriage couples and also at tender ages or soever does not contribute strongly to peoples untimely death...Moreover the Àlster` which is their biggest artificial river has no traditional, ritual or official prohibitions and tabu againsting the wear of black clothes (ayie ntoma)A purely naive and docile contribution. To culminate it all taken meals on favourites eg. fofuo at wrong times according to doctors statistics does not contribute to premature death in anywhere in the world. The writer of this article should please next time investigate well and not jumping to write any thing to fill the pages...not d best !

You have said it all! Instead of engaging themselves in activities to enhance their lives Ghanaians in Hamburg waste their time to celebrate funerals. Spending a lot of money to build mansions in Ghana instead of using it on themselves. You won´t see them at many useful social activities but only in Churches and on funerals. Their only means of entertainment! I live about 40 years in Hamburg but refrain from mingling with my people because they won´t change adopting some positive ways but rather stick to a lifestyle that will surely send them into graves at relatively young age.
So I agree with the writer :
The traumatic lifestyle; high divorce rate, inability to cope with the structured German routine, the bureaucracy, the bad eating habits –eating heavy “fufu” at mid nights, disregard for good health, could be a contributing factor..
Husbands and wives building separate mansions through their menial job, to impress family members back home. Unfortunately 90% do not even sleep in these homes before the lucky ones join the colleagues at “Hamburg -Friedhof Ohlsdorf (Kapelle 10) “the biggest cemetery in the World.

There is the need for us to find out what is happening with Ghanaians outside Hamburg first. It may be that Ghanaians are also dying prematurely in other countries as mentioned above. In view of your exciting piece I wish to call on all Ghanainas in a better positions in various countries to research on this topic and come out with their findings. Certainly, we may find out ways and means to prevent the premature deaths among Ghanaians outside Ghana. Thanks for piece. Keep up the good work.
