The capital base of our banks should be tripled or quadrupoled so that about four or five banks should be merged into mega banks wif huge financial backbone. We just need seven mega banks and three others to cater for the needs of the SMEs.

In their financial intermediary roles,the banks are in business for profit.So if investments in the oil and gas industry is profitable and within their risk tolerance levels,they will venture into the area either individually or through financial syndication.
I do not think it is the role of the central bank to either compel or suggest any line of business to the commercial banks and the other financial institutions.Allow competition among them to evolve new financial products,instead of pushing them into what they do not want to risk selling.
The basic function of the central bank is monetary policy implementation for a health economy.Keeping inflation in check and also supervising the financial institutions to avert bank failures.I think it is time to introduce deposit insurance in Ghana.
