@ Sarpong. Even though I don't condone the practice of the state housing ministers, MPs and other high officials, you are wrong in your assertion that Ministers are not housed by the tax payer in Britain. For your information, England for a start does not have it's own devolved parliament like Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Secondly, the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Finance Minister) lives in No.11 Downing Street, next door to the Prime Minister. Furthermore, the rent and even mortgage of so-called second homes of every MP is footed by the tax payer. There was a case of the husband of a minister in the Labour Government charging the public purse with the fee for watching an adult channel. MPs routinely charge public purse with cost of taxis, hotel accommodation and even dinners. I am afraid but the practice of democracy comes with at cost.

Do you know what you are talking about? Do you know anything about accounting? When you you file your taxes in USA, you have the option of taking the standard deduction or filing for itemized deduction which most of the people with houses take because of the taxes they pay on their mortgage, independent school district taxes, hospital district taxes, special taxes on second homes, etc.
The tax rebates you are talking about is available to all citizens and not only politicians. Please, get your facts in order.
.Senators, House of Representatives or Secretaries of various agencies do not get reimburse for their housing. These people pay for their own accommodations in Washington and that is why most of them don't have homes in Washington D.C.

What you are talking about is different from government paying for officials to live in Washington D.C. Anybody with a second home that is warranted because of business is allowed to take a certain percentage of the mortgage or rent which reduce their tax burden. It is not like you pay say $30,000 a year as rent and government gives that money back to you. The government might allow you to take that amount from your income before taxes.
Let's say your income is $200,000 a year, instead of the government taxing you on the 200,000, you will be taxed on only 170,000 dollars that might save you about 2000 to 5000 on your taxes depending on your marital status and other deductions.

This expensive or costly benefits for senior public officials is a huge drain on the state. They get all these numerous benefits at enormous cost to the tax payer whilst schools, hospitals and other critical services are starved of resources.
In the UK if a car is provided, the user must to contribute to the cost. For example, when I used an official car for work in a public organization because the job was considered essential car user, I had to pay £100 per month but used it both for work and private matters. I paid for fuel and only paid £0.35 per mile whenever I used the car to travel to work outside my designated place office (attending meetings, conferences, meeting clients, inspect projects, etc). I could have also used my own car and be paid an annual car allowance, which was taxable.
Very few heads of public organizations are provided with accommodation, let alone free and this is a rich country. I am sure if any is provided with accommodation they will be required to make a contribution towards the cost of the property.
The cheek of it is that at the end of their services some of them purchase these properties at knocked down prices as Jake and others have done. I suspect Ms Lauretta Lamptey was also planning to purchase her official residence at the end of her appointment and that is why she requested extensive renovation work to suit her preference. She is relatively young and would have served as Commissioner for a long time to probably justify her purchasing the property. Greedy nation wreckers.

This foolishness should have been corrected a long time ago. I've written many times, in this forum, that FREE CARS, HOUSING, UTILITIES, COOKS, DRIVERS, GARDEN BOYS and other FREEBIES for state officials were the LEGACIES from our colonial masters, but why did they do that?
1) To attract White folks from the UK to come or go to work in Africa, which was then like a jungle;
2) Drivers, Cooks, Garden boys were needed by the White man, because they didn't know our roads, our food stuff and couldn't (no time) or didn't know how to work the African garden.
3) Also, retirement age at 60 in the 21st century, Negro?? That was Mr. BOBO's idea also. At that time, the "life expectancy" was low and they didn't want many White folks to die and be buried on the Dark Continent. So, it went: John, retire at 60 (if you could make it there), return to England, spend the few years left for you, die and be buried there, because we can’t bury you in this jungle, it’s too hot here!!
Mr. BOBO is long gone, Negro. The life expectancy has greatly increased with good eating habits, exercise, many doctors, good medicines, hospitals, clinics, reasonably good sanitation, etc., etc., BUT STILL THE NEGRO IS MAINTAINING that stupid retirement age of 60. Teachers, some doctors, police officers and many civil servants are retired at 60 and FOOLISHLY, we cry for SHORTAGES in those areas. Why can't a healthy Ghanaian teacher Maths, Geography, History, Science, etc., at age 60, while WASHED OUT politicians can work well over 75 years? WHY????
The government should set up a committee to seriously review this "FREE THIS & FREE THAT, as well as the RETIREMENT AGE of 60. I want this age to be raised to a cool 70.

Indeed, scrapping those colonial legacies was the main aim of the Single Spine Scheme, as I learned in the beginning, only to have them still there plus the additional grotesque ones like the book and and research allowances. We have hear the lecturers using them as an excuse for their own demands. I was going to go to town on them in Part 3 of my Intellectual Bankruptcy in Ghana, so I won't jump the horse now.

IN THE FIRST PLACE, DID YOU ALSO HAVE HAVE SUCH A PRIVILEDGE WHEN YOU WERE THE RECTOR AT THE GHANA INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT.
WHY HAS IT TAKEN YOU YEARS BEFORE RAISING YOUR VOICE ON THE MANY NEGATIVE THINGS PREVAILING IN THE COUNTRY.
DO YOU KNOW WHAT, THE SO CALLED NOISY EDUCATED PEOPLE AND WHO ARE APPOINTED TO POSITIONS AT THE PUBLIC SECTOR DO STILL HAVE THE NOTION THAT, THE PEOPLE AND THE GOVERNMENT OF GHANA HAVE TO CATER FOR THEIR BASIC SERVICES IN THE COUNTRY.
THIS IS TOTALLY WRONG.
THE QUESTION IS,DO THESE PEOPLE EVEN HAVE THE ABILITY TO DELIVER IN THE TECHNOLOGY AS A DRIVE TO INNOVATION AND SCIENTIFIC ENQUIRY AND TO PUT THE NATION ON A SOUND ECONOMIC PATH TO PROSPERITY.
WE CANNOT CONTINUE TO ADDRESS THESE SERIOUS ISSUES CONFRONTING THE MATION ON SOCIAL MEDIA,IT IS TIME FOR ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL ACTIVISTS IN THE COUNTRY TO APPEAL TO THE PRESIDENT OF GHANA THAT AND FOR THESE PRIMITIVE THINKING OF THE PAST TO BE SCRAPPED IN THE COUNTRY.
THE WORLD HAS CHANGED SINCE 1945 AND IT IS LOMG OVERDUE FOR THESE KIND OF THE OLD PRIMITIVE HABITS, DEPENDING ON THE GOVERNMENT FOR EVERYTHING TO BE CHANGED.
THE OLD ODER CHANGEATH YIELDING PLACE TO NEW.
WHAT HAVE BEEN THEIR PERFORMANCES AND COMPETENCE AT THE PUBLIC SECTOR IN BRINGING ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL CHANGES IN GHANA.
THESE ARE THE VERY SERIOUS PROBLEMS THAT CONTINUES TO FACE THE AILING THE ECONOMY, DEPRECIATION OF THE CEDI,AND IN THE ADDITION THE USE OF GHANA'S EARNED FOREIGN CURRNCY BY THE GOVERNMENT FOR THE IMPORTION OF EXPENSIVE AND LUXURY CARS AND JEEPS FOR THE LAVISH LIFESTYLES FOR THE UNPRODUCTIVE PEOPLE IN THE COUNTRY.
WHICH COUNTRY IN THE DEVELOPED WORLD CAN SURVIVE A DAY WITH THESE KIND OF ORDERS.
UNLESS THE WHOLE PUBLIC SYSTEM IS OVERHAULED AND RESTRUCTURED GIVING WAY TO NEW THINKING, WE WILL CONTINUE TO TRAVEL ADDITIOMAL BOUNDARIES TO SEEK FOR LOANS, AID AND CREDIT.
A COUNTRY CANNNOT BE BUILT ON SUCH PRIMITIVE FOUNDATION.

Also, the money could be better invested instead of wasting it on these ostentatious amenities. Frugality is a powerful economic force.

Ghanaians are well-known for talking and not following the talk with action. Stephen Adei has proposed that with the exception of the President, the Vice President and the Speaker of Parliament, all other public servants must not be accommodated by the State. What now needs to be done is for Ghanaians to contact their MPs and voice their opinions on this matter. Perhaps that will spur the MPs into passing legislation to do away with this anachronistic policy bequeath by the colonial governments. Folks should not count on the MPs passing legislation to do away with benefits they enjoy. It will take a lot of political will for this to happen

Ghana is not a country to kill yourself for because the resources are not evenly and fairly shared. Is it not absurd to scrap teacher training allowances and nursing training allowances while monies are frivolously thrown into fruitless ventures like GYEEDA, SUBA, TREE PLANTING etc. It is even more absurd to come out with the policy that when a poor worker works for even two years, which mostly is the case, the person gets only three month salary arrears and forfeits the rest. What nonsense! Meanwhile unproductive politicians dissipate state resources with greed. With this kind of situation, the country is likely to plung further into the ditch.
