To get the cedi’s depreciation (or appreciation), he should have first found the value of ONE GHANA CEDI against the US dollar at two different points in time, which would be the following: 1 divided by 2.1628 and 1 divided by 3.035. If there’s a depreciation, the computer would automatically insert a negative sign (there would be no need to fudge); otherwise, it would be an appreciation. In this case, based on his data, the depreciation rate of the cedi against the dollar would actually be -28.7%, and not 40.3% (which, again, is the appreciation rate of the dollar against the cedi). What Nii Moi Thompson has done with this short rebuttal, reminds me of a 'mini-showdown' that took place some four decades ago between a so-called white African expert and a Ghanaian Professor,Kofi Hedjor[then teaching at the Univ of Guelph]. Hedjor, after listening to the presentation of that 'invited learned guest', emerged from the audience in a fully-packed university auditorium,to jap the guest speskers with some pointed quetions, which sent him pack-peddling!
The chairman for the event, the VP for Academic Affairs, sensing that the audience had been sold 'sub-standard goods',invited Kofi Hedjor to the poduim, where upon our Danshiki -attired Kofi Hedjor engaged in a 'demolition exercise' akin to the feat Nii Moi Thompson has just accomplished! And guess what, after his short intervention[no more than ten-minutes] Hedjor was given a rousing standing ovation which lasted for more than two minutes by a predominantly white audience.
But let`s not forget that Nii Moi did not only expose Bawuniah alone;but with just a single stroke, all the other charlatans like Casely-Hayford, Kwaku Kwarteng, and the host of all those '"pampaso" academics' who have sought to ride on the coat-tails of Bawumiah! My own advice to all those who jump into some of these 'useless sparring' encounters,is to be very honest and remain true to their profession, because there is always a danger in playing fast and loose with numbers!

I dont undertand Nii Moi's argument! He sought to rabbish Bawumiah's statement from the back end. What Bawumiah is simply saying saying is that, BOG does not generate any administraitve foreign exchange rates but relies on the prevailing interbank rates.Nii Moi, is that true or not?
if that is true, on the date in erefrence, Bawumia provided a list of prevaling interbank rates for the various commercial banks in Ghana. Nii Moi, were those rates true or false?
the rates ranged foe 3.65 - 4.10 cedis to the dollar, and averaging that will give some 3.8 cedis to 1 dollar, is that one to true or false?
so if at DEC 2013 the 2.2 cedis was for 1 one dollar and now 3.8 cedis is to 1 dollar rather than the 3.03 cedisa to 1 dollar BOG is qoutting, which one is right? if BOG takes all interbank rates and calculates the average, how can figures ranging from 3.65 - 4.10 give an aaverage of 3.03, a figure which is even lower the lowest figure in the range of tabulated figures?
Nii Moi should know that calculating the cedi depreciation ration rate of 40% was not only done by Bawumia but the Financial Times of UK and another reputable financial institution in US.
Here in Ghana, the Head of Finance Dept at University of Ghana Business School also share the same thought as Bawumia. IMANI, a local policy Tink tank is also having the same line of calculation, which is basic to everybody with basic knowledge of statistics and arithmetic. so Nii Moi, stop your propanga, no wonder your advise has lead the economy to where it is now; you can only succeeed in deceiveing those within the government but not the intellectuals outside government. As for your take on Inflation, what items are in the CPI basket? if you choose to put items which people dont usually buy and therefore their prices are relatively stable in the basket, dont expect to get get figures which refelect happenings on the ground. As you indicated in your concluding paragraph, what is causing the hard times we are facing? is the dereciation rate which you claim is low or the inflation rate which you agree is some 1.5%. what is the cause of the hardship then? Tell us!

Using 2013 figure as the base year the % change is 40, while using 2014 August figure of 3.035 as the base year the % change is 28.7. but my elementary school arithmetic tells me that 2013 should be used as the base year to give the correct % change. This exposure by the Banks in the long term wasn't sustainable yet because these Banks see an opening for profit-making ,they deliberately tell their customers that there are shortages so as to create excuse to sell at high rates and because Banks sell more than they buy from these customer, the banks knew their net position will inevitably produce profits. Nothing is affordable. Lorry fares,
prices of foodstuffs,medicals bills
etc. keeps on skyrocketing and yet they want people to believe that all is well. No,it is not. Ghanaians have become malnourished in the mist of abundance. Our children go to bed on empty stomachs, mothers keep wake,as our men are rendered impotent and useless. Why? This is simply because
man have ceased to become man. The Ghanaian man of today is gradually loosing his position as the head of the family. They are being devorced in numbers by their married partners since they have ceased to be providers. The whole system is broken down. Nothing is working properly in the land of our birth. I do less agree that- a. When an evil ruler leads a nation, the people suffer.
b. Ghana's economy has become static
and stale because of lack of knowlegde. It is a fact that Mahama and all his cabinets are visionless.
They are clueless when it comes to governance. Wickedness, lies, cheap propaganda, corruption, tribalism, theft,
nepotism and stupid pride is their hallmark. Mahama's government is there for themselves and for their families. That is all. I will therefore ask all well meaning Ghanaians to be fair to their
consciense and choose right leaders

Ghanaians, always remember that do not argue with a fool because when you do, the fool will reduce you to his level of thinking and, at the end he will use experience to beat you.
Everybody knows this is how NDC operates. Thanks

When Nii Moi therefore comes out to ostensibly rubbish the deductions of Dr. Bawumia in a propagandistic posture characteristic of the likes of Fifi Kwetey and Co., even whilst the economy continues to tank with the cedi depreciating, not the dollar appreciating, one cannot but come to terms with the fact that, Ghana is in for a long rough ride(no pun intended and apologies to Dr. Bawumia).

jon Mahama is a thief. He has damaged the country's economy so much so that it will be extremely difficult for Nana Addo to repair it but since the battle is the Lords' it will all be well. Jon Mahama is so wicked and must be put to jail even before 2016. Anything coming out of NDC ministers are all lies. No one in NDC speaks the truth. No wonder they are lying about bank rates, inflation and the economic conditions in Ghana. Mahama is a thief. He came only to enrich himself and his family. I hear he wants to opt out of the flagbearership but the truth of the matter is, he cannot continue no more. The kitchen is too hot for him and he wants to get out of it. Whether he runs away or not he will be chased after wherever he goes so that he gives us back all our money he has stolen since his mission as vice and now president of Ghana.
Mahama is the corrupt one. Enough evidence to prove that. The STX Korea , the purchase of the Embraer jet planes from Brazil which had him subjected to criminal investigation by Prof Mills, the 7 tons of gold intercepted in Kuwait, the Azontaba guinea fowl project and the list go on. And above all, Mahama, being the the prime beneficially of the plot assassination of Prof Mills, makes the former the most dangerous leader, after Rawlings, to have ever ruled and badly manage our economy. Mahama is unprecedented stealer.

Ordinarily, the central bank's rate is lower than market - in most economies. Suppressing the rate is attempt to manage the deteriorating situation - ie the fast depreciation, not necessarily an attempt to deceive the public.

Good try, Nii Moi, to circumlocating facts to arrive at square one. Every economist (except you) admits that the cedi is performing bad, therefore inflation has hit hikes which has caused prices to rise above previous years. Your attempt to blame this depreciation on the appreciation of the dollar makes no economic sense! You're either totally confused or trying to twist the average person's conscience to take sides on this issue. Whichever way you put it, I pity Mother Ghana for economic advisers like you handling its woes. It's because of you that Ghana is suffering since you always want to run away from the truth to give a 'clean face' to your masters. Get the hell out of here!

Yes maybe some people get USD from the central bank at ghs 3.02 to a USD but obviously those are government officials or high level NDC PERSONS. Ghana is a free market economy and prices are determined by demand and supply, you idiot. Go to the market and see how prices of goods are determined.
If you go to the Bank of Ghana now, you will not get One dollar for three cedis because the government has no dollars to exchange so the real rate of exchange should be the interbank average rate.
If the government has dollars, it can reduce the interbank rate by pumping dollars into the system and that will bring the interbank rate and BoG rate close and not the vast difference now at 80 pesewas.

The LAW is there read. The can be NO free market economy under an exchange control act. All those dealers in foreign currencies are licensees. There's a licensor which is BOG. Here is the simplest way to calculate the rate of the currency depreciation, according to the exchange rate as used by Dr Bawumia. Dr Bawumia assumed the exchange rate at close of December 2013, to be GHc2.2 to $1.0. Today, he assumed the exchange rate to Ghc3.8 to $1.0. So, here is the simply calculation:
=((3.8-2.2)/3.8)) = 0.42105 or 42.11%. This is why Dr Bawumia rightfully said that "this represents a depreciation of over 40%." Dr Bawumia in his analysis did not use either 2.1628 or 3.035 in determining the level of the depreciation. Casey Hayford did his own analysis independent of the base numbers used by Dr Bawumia. Nii Moi should try not to throw dust into our eyes by trying to fudge his own data to discredit someone's work.

A changing value of one currency to another currency is NOT the same as loss or gain of purchasing power of a currency. Their calculations are different. The former is comparative , the latter is NOT. You sound clueless but Nii Moi just calculated the former. "To get the cedi’s depreciation (or appreciation), he should have first found the value of ONE GHANA CEDI against the US dollar at two different points in time, which would be the following: 1 divided by 2.1628 and 1 divided by 3.035. If there’s a depreciation, the computer would automatically insert a negative sign (there would be no need to fudge); otherwise, it would be an appreciation. In this case, based on his data, the depreciation rate of the cedi against the dollar would actually be -28.7%, and not 40.3% (which, again, is the appreciation rate of the dollar against the cedi)". Can't you discern?

EU before ghana sign the supposed stupid trade agreement with EU (EPA) they had different figures from what ghana is giving to the IMF.
Those we call govt advicers should lie to the govt thinking they are only lying only to the govt. There lies dont help ghanaians in any way.
Why would the BOG come out and prove Bawumia wrong if they think he is. We all know you cant buy a dollar for less than 3.8 gh cedis. Why lie to IMF when all ghanaians know prices and the value of the cedi is falling.
Nii Moi should be ashame calling himself economist. These book economist are killing ghanaians.

But in a Mahama NDC administration where Anita De-Soso and her ilk can postulate dwarves being responsible for the depreciation of the cedi, Amaliba and Co. postulating that high rise buildings are the cause of the economic nightmare in which the country finds itself, Nii Moi should expect a promotion in this NDC gov't because at the very least, he speaks the economic language, if it doesn't even make any sense. Dr. Bawumia, a technocrat, has since entering politics has successfully courted support in the opposition NPP by playing to the gallery with re-engineered statistics (at Supreme Court and in Statements of the Economy) to back Nana Addo's leadership claims, and get ahead of all economists in the party. The target has been to cast him as the "Leading Economist" of the Party, a campaign asset and ultimately Party Leader. This is understandable because Nana Addo, at his age, badly needs a Mills-type succession plan that maintains his grip over the NPP, and Bawumia who has no constituency and clout in the yenim fre titi Party leadership and traditions will have his future forever tied to Nana Addo's mafia. But why is it that the foundations of his every economic argument has to be based on rubbishing the institutions that provide economic data on Ghana locally and internationally. How does he intend to restore the credibility of these statutory institutions he is now discrediting if he becomes Vice-President - by personal guarantees that he will not interfere or influencing their work, when even in opposition he is trying to do so. These so called revelations eventually define his person, politics and future, as technocrat and thought leader, if he really wants to maintain broad-based respectability and statesmanship before and after political office, post-2016. Eventually, true leaders aim for honest statesmanship not convenience and partisanship.

I sometimes wonder the kind of appointees Mahama has advisng him. Fact is that most of these people with massive credentials do not have native intellect. Managing Ghana;s economy now is not about book knowledge it is about common sense. It is about a group of persons who have squandered our money recklessly and need to still operate. What do you do? Stick to bare essentials - education, health, agric and forget equiping the army, constructing flyovers etc. tackle what will make the economy move - improved business activity, injection of cash into exportable agro products etc. Common sense Mahama. All of you should think and think. What is this nonsense going on. There are matured people in the system who can help solve our problems. I get worried when our esteemed Bawumia plays cheap politics to catch the eyes of NPP king makers. There's better way for him to gain recognition rather than resorting to some baseless economic figures that he twists to suit his political masters. For him to think that he, and he only, has the right inflation/forex figures and everybody else is wrong is pathetic indeed. At the rate he keeps spewing unscientific economic data and allegations, he will end up discrediting himself, all in the hope he becomes vice president, then Akuffo-Ado dies and then he automatically becomes president. That's his long-term goal so he has started firing on his cylinders for recognition and acceptance. But let the truth be told that honesty is a virtue. what goes around comes around. Take a cue from Dr. Faustus. A word to the wise...!

Back the local currency so that thieves could exchange their Cedis into Foreign exchange and then transfer the foreign currency into their accounts abroad. This is what we call Makola and Buying and Selling Economics. Bawumia is nobody. Top economists in the world are found in Financial Institutions

A renowned economist, Kwame Pianim, has defended the credibility of the exchange rate and inflation figures released by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).
Data released from the two institutions have been questioned by some economists including a former Deputy Governor of the Bank Of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
But economist Kwame Pianim says the work of professionals in these institutions must be respected.
“Politicians like Dr. Bawumia and think tanks can raise the issue, to say we have the feeling that looking at certain things may be these figures may not reflect the realities on the ground. It is a hunch. The only people who have the numbers are these institutions….let’s give credibility to our numbers and our systems and our professionals “, he stressed.
Kwame Pianim also questioned how the same professionals who worked under Dr. Bawumia when he was deputy governor of the Bank of Ghana could be accused of manipulating figures and data.
“Dr. Bawumia was the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana; he knows how statistics in Bank of Ghana are put together, what has changed at the Bank of Ghana and at the ministry? The people were working for him (previously), they are still there? “, he stated.

Then this dubious financial analyst of Casely Hayford too. why use wrong formular in making serious economic analysis for publication. the golden rule for the analyst is that if you are in doubt, do some basic research. it is a shame!

Very interesting analysis made but does not change facts. Dr. Bawumia made known figures since June for the exchange rate for a dollar at 3.03 cedis to date.Certainly that is not the case. For inflation figures there may be some truth in them as I keep saying that as figures go up their percentage differences reduce. Simply add 5 to 5 and there is a 100% increase but add another 5 and it comes down to 50% increase over the 10. increasing numbers added would further give a much lesser percentage increase to the numbers.
