Dearest Chief Vandal,
You are perfectly right! The death, burial and funeral of PV Obeng and some others have taken front stage in the media, whilst the death of a PILLAR and GIANT like Prof. AA Kwapong remains silent (unannounced) until now. How come? Maybe for the fact that he is not a politicians and has not been outspoken on political issues - not even when he a Chair of the Council of State. What a sad situation!
Well, the good thing about the likes of Prof. Kwapong is that, politics or no politics, they just make their contributions silently (unsung), behind the scenes - possibly leaving posterity to comment on.
May the soul of Prof Kwapong rest in perfect peace! In such times, I tend to agree and relate to what Chinua Achebe wrote: "Turning and turning in the widening gyre, the falcon cannot hear the falconer, things fall apart, the centre cannot hold, mere anarchy is lose upon the world (I am not sure whether I got the quote fully right - make needed corrections, if any)."

Ghanaian journalists must learn their trade well. How can anyone write of the death of Prof Kwapong without mentioning that he was a long serving vice chancellor of the University of Ghana, Legon?
It is the one main institution that identify heavily with the prof. I know what I'm talking about - because I'm a journalist, albeit in a Western nation.
The source is given as UN University, but the journalist should've done his own research and add it to whatever was handed him/her.
Years ago (early 80s), I remember being taught how to write an obituary at School of Communications at Legon.

I totally agree with you. Not a mention was made that this man transformed University of Ghana to what it is today. Ghana media is replete with journalists who have poor writing skills. What a shame!

Why not blame UG Legon or the government for not reporting Prof's death? The source is United Nations the reason their focus is on what Prof Kwapong did for UNU. I wish they had mentioned his age at death.

It is sad that the director of UNU-INRA Dr Ayuk has to break this sad news to Ghanaians and the world. The late Prof Kwapong's contribution to the development of the country in several areas especially education is so immense that I hope arrangements are being put in place to bury him as a precious national asset.

Prof. Kwapong, you have done so much for Ghana and Africa, you deserve more than state burial. You were not a politician, but you rose above them and answered your nation's call in education and given advice where it was necessary. First African vice-chancellor of the then Legon was no mean achievement. You did not steal money from the state to be honored by them later in death, but God is the ultimate judge. REST IN PEACE FOR JOB WELL DONE.

Dearest Nii Shamo,
Oh yes, this is a man with excellent sense of humour, par excellence. In his early days at U of G, as a Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kwapong (his background as Classics & Linguistics) was once asked by a bunch of students, who were eager and desperate to know the prospects for persons who majored or specialized in "Classics and Linguistics."
Prof at his best, with very little effort, cracked his wisdom, telling the young folks: "With Classics and Linguistics, AT LEAST you can become a VICE CHANCELLOR."
Such a person dies on August 9 and we are learning about his death from some obscure corner of print media; sadly it is not a FRONT PAGE NEWS. What a shame!
