It is only in Ghana would such a dishonorably idiot be on the government pay roll. Professor Mill should be solely blamed for imposing those criminals on us. After Mills found Betty Moulds guilty of judgement debt payments the only thing he could do was to move her to the Education dept to continue her looting. Readers would recall that Betty Mounds was the one who awarded SCHOOL building contracts at a triple price of the existing contract sum of some GH 80,000.00. And this happened at a time when they claim inflation was in the single digits. Could you imargin how foolish these criminal liars were. Kuffour built similar structures with 80,000 at a time when inflation was around 14.8% and under Mills it was 240,000 at a rate of 8.8%. And these buffoons turn around to blame the fall of the cedi on some mysterious dwarfs. I don't blame those African countries that have been ripped apart by civil unrest because if you have such buffoons in power who always turn our local elections into a West Africa one
by contracting Togolese Trokosis, Burkinabe and Wangaras from La Cote D'ivoire to vote for them, the " Road To Kigare", is sometimes, a likely option to kick their ass from power.

The demonetization of the Cedi did not appreciate the Ghanaian Cedi because the NPP government failed to put in place sound macroeconomic policies to foster the appreciation of the cedi. Besides Ghana was a net importer of foreign goods and had a nascent manufacturing sector. The only way to appreciate the Cedi is to: embrace a proactive agricultural platform, introduce a massive industrialization drive, diversify both the economy and export mix. This will entail not only depending overwhelmingly on commodity goods (agricultural produce and extractive products)for the generation of National Income but rather engaging in adding a higher value to the myriad of natural resources Ghana commands before their sale on the global market-from low tech goods to high tech goods. The export mix should not ONLY be varied but should be sophisticated and meet the threshold or economic efficiency. Globally countries that continuously generate the bulk of their GDP from the secondary (Manufacturing) and Tertiary sectors (Service sector) are the ones that are resilient global economic shocks, have vibrant economies, strong local currencies and High GDP. In the absence of these major steps being taken, the demonetization of the Cedi under Kuffour was nothing but a smokescreen bound to fail. Otabil is wrong and so do all regimes that followed Nkrumah's regime-these regimes failed to diversify the economy and export mix. It was ONLY Nkrumah's regime that introduced a measure of diversification and prosperity in Ghana.

Alfred while some of the factors you mentioned are contributory to the problem the main factors that determine the fate of currencies is tied to the balance of payment of Ghana, terms of trade and the elasticity of foreign demand for Ghanaian goods and services. Ghana also needs to be resilient to global economic shocks with the advent of globalization. For these goods to be competitive there is therefore the urgent need to add a higher value to the myriad of natural resources/services that Ghana exports, this process can only take place with the diversification of both the economy and export mix. Industrialization is key and the need to introduce a measure of sophistication in Ghanaian goods/services would be the final game changer in resolving the problem. In the absence of these initiatives, demonetization will not help and neither will it be possible for the Bank of Ghana to fix the depreciation of the Cedi.

IMANI, depreciation of a country's currency is only good for exports if the country can take advantage and increased exports. Even in that situation the exports should be manufactured goods or services as raw materials would not benefit that much from exports. For these and other reasons, the falling cedi is not good for Ghana's economy because raw materials exports cannot be increased instantly as they take longer, at least one year to mature. The only effect of a falling cedi is therefore is higher imports cost leading increased inflation.

Nobody expected the Cedi to remain the same. The problem is we did not expect it to depreciate so fast either. To all those NDC people who don't know about anything but blind support, I say unto thee, a depreciated Cedi is not good for the nation because we don't export anything. We do import and the cost of a higher Cedi to import is passed on to the consumer which is you and me. So you don't need a higher currency if you don't produce anything. This is only practical and we don't to be economic gurus to this. You NDC people should stop being naive and pray that our currency won't depreciate much further.

I honestly don't think a country's undeveloped natural resources (especially a third world country) has a direct relations with the weight of its currency but more to do with its economic independence, more specifically, how it produces what it consumes. So long as the country needs dollars to import even toothpick, its currency will never stabilize. As the economy grows more appetite for goods grow, more demand for dollar and more pressure on the local currency. That's why even unrefined gold cannot save the Cedi. Eventually besides monetary union which is extremely important Ghana has to embark on massive industrialization just as Nkrumah did.

They Say They Say you are right about industrialization as the game changer but more importantly selling raw materials and extractive products create jobs elsewhere at the expense of the economy of Ghana, impedes indigenous technology, enhance food security and are more prone to global economic shocks. Have you ever thought about the exploits of Indonesia, Brazil, Malaysia, Mauritius the Asian Tiger economies? These countries' successful economic strides can be associated with industrialization and adding a higher value to their natural resources and extractive products. Ghana can do the same thing to create jobs, enhance indigenous jobs, create avenues for the awards of patents, strengthen the local currency and create a vibrant economy. Tying the Cedi to gold will not solve the problem!

What Otabil and all Ghanaians must realise is this: each currency is like a grain of sand put through a sieve and will automatically find its rightful place when the sieve is shaken. In this case the position is determined not by the size of the holes in the sieve but by the value and performance of the economy. You can go round preaching and demonising the NDC government till the cows come home but unless Ghanaians collectively work harder and increase their per capita income to back the currency accordingly to its perceived rightful place, no government will change the downward spiral of the Cedi. You don't just remove zeros from your currency and expect it to remain at its "falsified" value without an equivalent increase in productivity to shore up that value. I am not an economist but common sense would tell me that events like the recent credit crunch would shake the global "currency sieve" and every currency would settle at its rightful place. This is determined by global economic forces, not political leadership and, though leadership has a role to play the citizenry equally have to play their part. The real perpetrators are international bankers but those of us who are lazy at thinking conveniently blame it on our leaders. We saw the same ripple effects in Greece, Italy, Ireland, Argentina and closer to home in Nigeria and South Africa. In all these places the only thing that has made any difference is prudent economic management coupled with hard work and time. This government has set in motion certain measures aimed at arresting the situation and they are not very different from measures put in place in the UK, Ireland and Greece as well as Spain. We know that these things typically take 3-year cycles to bear any meaningful fruit. Otabil and his NPP cohort want results in under 6 months without any of the sacrifices and hard work that other countries used to propel their economies back to growth. What planet do they live on? It must be pointed out that wilfully misleading Ghanaians in order to achieve narrow-minded political ends is ungodly to say the least and the last person we would expect that from is a man of God of Otabil's stature. It is right to point out the obvious but you must do so in an objective and unbiased manner otherwise all your hard-earned credibility goes out of the window. Isn't it interesting that all the good achievements of this government, and there are good achievements, are completely sidelined? Where is the honesty and objectivity? Why is Otabil not saying anything about the modification of Kumasi airport? The upgrade of Tamale airport to international status which is currently underway? The upgrade and expansion of our railways? The expansion of our ports? The construction and refurbishments of numerous roads that the president has commissioned many? The fact that this government has received an award for achieving the millennium goal of eliminating hunger? That Ghana is now a net exporter of corn and other foodstuffs? That we have made a slight improvement on our human development index? That education is being massively expanded with construction of many new schools? That our economy is still growing at about 6%? That law and order is improving in Ghana? That our tourism industry is growing? That the government is supporting farmers to increase agricultural productivity? That our regional hospitals are massively expanded and modified? Does this really sound like a country in crisis as a renowned economist like Bawumia put it? Or a "sinking economy" as Otabil would have us believe? Aba! Let's learn to call a spade a spade.

If your hardened criminal gang in this NDC Government didn't create, loot, and share the money that was supposed to be used for infrastructural develooment the hardships and the precipitous drop in the cedi Ghana is experiencing now wouldn't be happening. After stealing the hard earned money, your useless thieves are now printing excess paper money in the system to chase less goods and services in the system. Every class one pupil will tell you that such a behaviour will lead to inflation and hardships. This same situation happened under Rawlings' NDC administration between 1998-2000. Unfortunately you guys are too stupid not to have learned lessons in the past and are repeating the same things in 2014. Ghanaians have remained the same Ghanaians when Kufour met during his administration. He met the mess you fools left behind in 2000. Through discipline and wisdom he corrected things to make life a little bit more bearable for Ghanaians. He did this at a time Ghana didn't have revenue from oil in commercial quantities. Unfortunately for naive and some stupid Ghanaians, they turned the country over to fraudsers and professional liars who negotiate loans on stupid terms that even a lunatic would not contemplate.

At least I am wise enough not to use your kind of language. What you called printing money is what others term quantitative easing. No country used quantitative easing more than the USA and that did not lead to any significant rise in US inflation. That would suggest there is more to it than just printing money. Besides if you have any evidence of anyone looting and sharing your country's money why don't you go to court and prove your case? Talk is cheap.

Elijah, you made my day. You really made some interesting points. Dont be upset if i plagiarise your stuff on my fb. its hard time we stop petty party politics with everything ghana and concentrate on the fundamentals. some people are busily praying for Mahama to fail not knowing that will amount to ghanas failure. they think by NDC failing , their party then can come to power. This is my take: it doesn't matter how well a government performs, can be voted out after some time, otherwise the democrats in USA would have still won power after Bill Clintons term. No body will build ghana for us but ourselves. not IMF, world bank, WTO, UK, USA, China etc. let stop politicising everything and think of ghana instead of NPP and NDC. God bless my homeland ghana.

I strongly believe that it was very wrong for the Kufour administration to place the devalued and HIPIC Ghanaian Cedi at par with the USA Dollar! They thought by discovering oil, we should immediately equate the two currencies. How could they have compared the trillion dollar economy to the 10 billion Ghanaian economy? It just did not make any sense! There was no foresight then. It is this simple; the truth is that the economic/monetary policy of Kufour's government had brought us the current predicament!

When did the cedi surpass the dollar in value and how long did it hold its value? How did productivity and GDP fall if there was sustainable basis for the value of the cedi? The educated, political and parasites from houses of God do talk not only out of ignorance but tribal and political party loyalty play books they seem to throw common sense out of the window. A nation the size of Ghana with a minuscule number of classroom intellectuals who refuse to use their classroom earned degrees and thus defer all things economics and or finance to one man, Dr. Bawumia, is a nation bound to wallow in economic misery. Does anybody know why we fail at the things and or decisions we take? If we build independent and effective institutions along with best practices and procedures of government we will sustain success at the things we do. It is a joke for the NPP to throw Dr. Bawumia around when Dr. Bawumia cannot cite a foundation he knows to be operational at BoG or any practices and procedures between BoG and ministry of Finance that would deter bogus payments or issuance of vouchers/cheques. Pastor Mensah Otabil must continue to pray to the Christian God to grant him and his congregation wisdom to fan through the chaff lest they enable corrupt and hypocrites as Ghana's preferred politicians.

And I hope what I'm about saying won't compel you to stop praying for me. I'll continue to be a member of the ICGC and hope you'll permit it to be so well after I've made my point. President Kufour did not leave office at 1:0.92. I wonder if the 1:9,200 was reduced to 1:0.92 on the alter of economic development. I don't believe it was the result of any industrial boom in the mid 2000. It was just a little magic of knocking off 3-zeros. In our present circumstance your wish could be likened to performing another magic by again knocking off just one more zero. That could even be more magical than that of 2006. This time around, we could comfortably perch at 1:0.4. Won't that be more glorifying than the 1:0.92 you are dreaming of? What do you think Rev.?

Mr. Otabil should spare us his political stunts. We all know he is politician and was once involved in Kuffuor's administration that saw the collapsed of the national Theatre, GBC, the sales of the Ghana telecom among other things. Why is he referring to Kuffuor's administration? In Rawlings Administration, $1 was equivalent to less than 50p when his Boss Kuffuor took over. In 2007 under Kuffuor's administration, $1 was equivalent to GHC1 not 92p. Why is Mr. Otabil saying this to his congregation? Is that what will exonerate them? In the mist of hardship and hopelessness, Mr. Otabil still takes the fat pay from the church coffers at the expense of the poor. Otabil is gradually becoming a social menace and political psychopath in Ghana. His derogatory comments and peccable nature aimed to intricate and ensure political unrest in Ghana need to be made known to the Ghanaian public so that everyone can distant from him and his comments. Otabil need psychiatric attention to have his cranial index stabilize. Because Otabil has turned his church to a terror group and currently, he is nurturing a home grown terrorist in the church. Otabil is one of the people indirectly working hard to plug Ghana in to mayhem. Otabil is psychologically and mentally sick. God Bless Ghana.

A man with a 25 inch long penis goes to his doctor to complain that he is having a problem with this cumbersome instrument and has had more than one complaint. "Doctor," he asked, in total frustration, "is there anything you can do for me?" The doctor replies, "Medically son, there is nothing I can do. But, I do know this witch who may be able to help you." So the doctor gives him directions to the witch.
The man calls upon the witch and relays his story. "Witch, my penis is 25 inches long and I need help. Can anything be done to help me? You are my last hope!" The witch stares in amazement, scratches her head, and then replies, "I think I may be able to help you. Do this. Go deep into the forest. You will find a pond. In this pond, you will find a frog sitting on a log. This frog has magic. You say to frog, will you marry me? When the frog says no, you will find five inches less to your problem."
The man's face lit up and he dashed off into the forest. He called out to the frog, "Will you marry me?" The frog looked at him dejectedly and replied, "NO." The man looked down and suddenly his penis was 5 inches shorter. "WOW," he screamed out loud, "This is great!!" But at 20 inches it wass still too long, so he asked the frog again. "Frog, will you marry me?" the guy shouted. The frog rolled its eyes back in its head and screamed back, "NO!" The man felt another twitch in his penis, looked down, and it was another 5 inches shorter. The man laughed, "This is fantastic." He looked down at his penis again, 15 inches long, and reflected for a moment Fifteen inches is still a monster, just a little less would be ideal.
Grinning, he looked across the pond and yelled out, "Frog will you marry me?" The frog looked back across pond shaking its head, "How many times do I have to tell you? NO, NO, NO!!"

I LOVE WHAT PASTOR MENSA OTABIL HAS TAUGHT HERE.
It is sound doctrine, these politicians can never grasp.
John 8:32 SAYS:
YE SHALL KNOW THE TRUTH AND THE TRUTH SHALL MAKE YOU FREE.
The preacher has preached God's word, that carry weight, revelations and substance, but the truth within it,has been hidden from the wise and the prudent:
OUR POLITICIANS.
To the wise,an indelible wisdom, but to the ignorant, naive, conventional thinkers,a problem.

Folks, this is a man who is only preaching these days on topics he has no in-depth knowledge about or facts on, but rather based on sentiments, hear-says and bitterness.
Did you hear him quote the current dollar rate wrongly? He is talking about $1 being GHC 4, whereas the correct rate is about GHC 3. What is the point in making a point based on doubt or ignorance? He should have known better to cross check his facts before mounting his pulpit which makes him think he is worthy of being worshiped. This only happens when you allow partisan politics to engulf your reasoning and direction.
Is he the same Otabil we use to know, or because of his now wealth he is preaching with a different book?
He can be political which is a good thing in a developing country like Ghana but not partisan. I believe his problem is knowing the difference especially at the time when he is not enjoying what he use to, from the people at the top echelon of political power.

If one dollar is currently equivalent to 4 cedis, then NDC can use the easy and the dumbest, deceptive , unconscionable solution:
Redominate the cedi from 4 cedis to 1 cedi , meaning every 400 cedis you have will be become 100 cedis
This way we 'make the cedi strong'
$1 = GHC1
Or redenomiate 8 cedis to 1 cedi. which means if you have 800 cedis it will now become 100 cedis and that will bring the exchange rate to
50 pesewas = $1.
This is exactly what Kuffour did. His primary goal, obviously or if you try to make any sense out of the redenomination, was to alleviate the pain of having to carry sacks of cedis in exchange for a few dollars ( 10,000 cedis to 1 dollar)
I hope no one on this forum will be thinking that the redenomination executed by kuffour was aimed at fixing the free fall of the cedi which has been ongoing for over 30 decades.
Let me tell you brothers and sisters that, NO GOVT in Ghana can fix the economy or the ever sinking cedi, without increasing our exports or having structures and commodities in place to render importation of goods into the country unattractive.
So far as we continue to import sokodua, tomatoe, corn, rice, gari, peanut etc, the Cedi will continue to go down. The dollar will continue to be in high demand.
The number one solution is to make agriculture attractive for college graduates to engage in.
1. Make loans available
2. Make lands easy to acquire
3. Support mechanized farming -making tractors available for hire
4. subsidize fertilizers and insecticides
5. support the creation of more produce buying agencies to buy , store and export cash crops at reasonable prices - like we do for cocoa
5. Provide training both online and in traditional classroom to provide education for people who would like to go into farming - crops, fish(tilapia, catfish etc), livestock (akrantie, snails, rabbbit, goat, pigs, etc , etc)
6. Make pickup trucks available at subsidized price for farmers
Encourage farming, make it attractive for graduates to feel good about going into farming. Just telling graduates to go into farming is dumb and not enough. No one will listen to the govt, especially having witnessed the frustration and lack of respect for farmers. Farmers are always seen as broke and farming is considered as something for illiterates.
AGRIC! AGRIC! AGRIC!. The #1 solution for ghana and most african countries.

The man is talking sense.Whether you see him as a pastor, a politician or whatever does not matter. The reality is that the cedi has depreciated so badly. The government must sit up.The times of propaganda should be over.We are in the current situation because of bad governance by the current administration. Is as if we are jokers- payment of unwarranted judgement debt like Woyome's,SADA, GYEDA,buying of V 8 for chiefs, air lifting huge sums of foreign currency to players in Brazil for that poor show in times of the current economic crises. The most irritating of all is attempts by government to cut public sector allowances like that of UTAG/POTAG whilst they continue to enjoy their huge ones.
Give the man of God a break. I don't fellowship at his church, but I think I agree with him on most things I have heard him say including both religious and secular issues.
God/ Nature has blessed Africa with a lot of natural resources, but because of mismanagement look at where most African countries are- is as if we don't have brains.Read former president of SOUTH Africa ,PW BOTHA's, speech he read to his cabinet some time ago-just google it, you will appreciate it.
In fact in my opinion, Ghana is already a SUNK SHIP, not a sinking one.

I am sure you do not give much of your wealth to your needy congregation. The church is a multi-billion Cedi business and still exploiting the poor by just telling them to have faith and it is the fault of the government. Is it not the same as telling the congregation to vote against the current government? "The angel you know ........." Ghana, don't get confused. That old man Nana will need to pay all he owes within one year if he wins the Presidency because he has few years to cover the loans for both lost elections and pay himself for the stress he went through . The problem we have is corruption and lawlessness. I dare all of us to do the right thing at our work places for just one week. That is, no bribery, no under and over invoicing, no tax evasion with the help of government officials, no stealing of government money and office equipment, no unnecessary 'item 13" government officials, no aiding and abetting of smugglers at our borders and ports, politicians will be true 'public servants" and not use their positions to amass wealth for themselves, friends and families, government will put competent and qualified individuals to head our institutions irrespective of party affiliations,in short we will accept responsibility for our actions that have contributed to the mess in which we find ourselves as a nation, we will realize that Ghana is actually a paradise. The average Ghanaian wants to eat his or her cake and have it. It does not work like that. The bible says, we will reap what we sow. If we as Ghanaians do not change our behaviours, even the best of leaders will not be able to make a difference.

It is ridiculous the way Ghanaians keep talking about the Ghana Cedi. I for one can never understand why K4 pegged the Ghana Cedi equivalent to the United States Dollar. The United States can make a sale of arms to the Arab countries to the tune of Billions of dollars, and that alone is not what they sell. What can Ghana sell that can match Billions at a time. All we can boast of is Cocoa. We do not even peg the price of what we sell. Some other country tells us what they want to pay, and we have no sayso in the matter. We can shout all we want, whatever the Western world who control the world finances want our Ghana Cedi to be, is what it will be. Whether it is K4, or Akufo Addo or some Pastor, they will still do what they want to do to keep Ghana begging for scraps from the western world. What we can do is to outsmart them, and we can do it. We have to come together and wrestle our financial independence from their hands the same way we got our political independence. Let us all get started from this day instead of making them think they are winning. Long live Ghana.

It has become very difficult for me to understand the position of this honorable man. First, every reasonable person knows that it was wrong for Kuffour to have redenominated the cedi at a ratio of 10000 old Ghana cedi to 1GHC because our system is not well developed for people to understand price increases/adjustment.
Two, why will The man of God not rather teach the people how to make smart business decision, encourage Ghanaians to love man in Ghana goods, live within their means( if a university student decides to spend his small inheritance on a Samsung S5 GALAXY instead of learning to invest the money or starting a small business on the side when the average American student will not spend that much on a phone), work hard, demand accountability from their govt, engage in responsible reporting from our journalist, encourage more export, adding value to products we export until that is done the cedi will continue to fall because we depend on other countries for our survivor. It is not going to be the govt alone but the people's determination to put Ghana first.

Why dont they talk about corruption which is destroying the nation ? all the public institutions are corrupt and all these people are in their churches , so i ask what message do they preach to their congregations ? Talk about the Cedi depreciating , yes , but even the Dollar is depreciating against the Euro and the Pound , we live in country where budgets are financed by foreign loans and aides , so what do we expect ? Mind us all , the donar nations are no more contributing to our budgets like before , reason being , all are facing crises just like us , un employment is getting high almost in all the Europeans countries . The only solution to our problems is fighting corruption and mis management of our institutions , then we can our nation improving else all these talks are nothing .
