Under every dark cloud there is a silver lining.

I think that we should all be happy that the fool-soldiers are running away for greener pastures. Obviously those who got the opportunity to go to Brazil are the Field Marshals, Generals, brigadiers and Special Forces among the the fool-soldiers.

This means that Mahama will not be able to fully get the kind of buga-buga support that the NDC traditionally applies in election periods to cheat in elections. It also means that there is more hope that 2016 will be a more peaceful and civilized election.

I think all the other parties should pop a bottle of champagne each on hearing this good news.

ABUJA: Four hundred Nigerians are serving jail term in various Chinese prisons, Treasurer of Nigerian Students Association, Alhaji Tukur Hassan Tingilin, has disclosed to Vanguard Learning.
Tingilin, a student of Tianjin University of Technology and Education, studying, Mechanical Manufacture and Automation, who spoke exclusively with Vanguard in Bejing, quoted the Nigerian Ambassador in China, Ambassador Aminu Wali, as saying that majority of affected Nigerians were jailed for drug related offences.

According to Tingilin “I was opportuned to be at Beijing in July just before the Presidential visit where I heard the Ambassador Aminu Wali saying there are currently over 400 Nigerians serving terms in various jails in China.

“Wali also disclosed that 80 per cent of the prisoners committed drug related offences and about 80 per cent of the crimes committed by Africans were committed by Nigerian citizens.

“We certainly have big issues with drug related crimes committed by Nigerians in China and when you look at the whole of Africa you find out that about 80 percent of all the offences and crimes committed by Africans in China about 80 percent is committed by Nigerians; that is why I think we are having running battle to try and control the situation.

He further quoted Ambassador Wali as saying, “But we need assistance from back home, from the security agencies manning our exits and entry points in Nigeria to be more alert and vigilant to make sure these type of individuals LIKE NAIJABOY,NEMESIS, AND ABOUBAKEER ISMAIL do not escape and pass through our routes to come into, not only to China but any other country in the world because drug trafficking as it were, drug is the biggest problem that we have as far as Nigerians are concerned.

“A lot of them don’t come in with their real names so sometimes with difficulties we only know when they are taken prisoners or they are sentenced and they are looking for consular visits.”

Almost four thousand Ghanaians are addicted to illicit drugs while several others are reported to be engaged in constant drug trafficking annually.

According to the Ghana National Narcotic Control Board (NACOB), the trend of the use and trafficking of drugs among Ghanaians is worrying and requires urgent redress.

Officials of the board say the development which is becoming difficult to handle is now a threat to the peace and security of the country.

Francis Kofi Torkonoo, a senior official of NACOB, told XYZ News that the country must take a serious stance against drug trafficking and its use.

“It is increasing and as a nation it is high time we stop and take a second look at our regard to drug use in this country,” Mr. Torkonoo said.

“As a country we are under threat and seriously we need to be talking and putting measures to address this drug issue”.

Nigerians and nationals from eight other countries have been rated among certain races who are bound to succeed over others in America, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

According to U.S. local media monitored by NAN, a law Professor at the Yale University in the US, Amy Chua and her husband, Jed Rubenfeld, in their controversial book titled “The Triple Package”, named the other nationals.

The nationals include Jews, Indians, Chinese, Iranians, Lebanese-Americans and Cubans.

The couple contended that Nigerians earn doctorates at stunningly high rates.

The authors also added that Indian and Chinese Americans had much higher incomes than other Americans while Jews might have the highest of all.

Chua and Rubenfeld explained that the “cultural groups” have three traits in common, namely a superiority complex, insecurity and impulse control.

They also said that each group believed theywere “exceptional, chosen and superior in some way, but at the same time, isn't entirely confident and that they still feel the need to prove themselves”.

Chua and Rubenfeld, who claimed to draw on “groundbreaking research and startling statistics”, are bound to attract criticism for the new book.

It also touches on why some groups, including African-Americans, might not have what it takes to reach the top.

It would be recalled that Chua's 2011 memoir infuriated some parents, who thought the author's disciplinary parenting methods weren't only ineffective, but abusive and cruel.

Nigeria overtake S.Africa as Africa's biggest economy

Lagos (AFP) - Nigeria, Africa's most populous country and largest oil producer, is set to emerge as the continent's biggest economy on Sunday when the results of an overdue rebasing of its gross domestic product are announced.

Although United Nations statisticians recommend that countries rebase their GDP calculations every five years to reflect changes in the structure of production and consumption, Nigeria last carried out the exercise in 1990.

So the new figures expected to be unveiled by Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iwela and top government statisticians from 2:00 pm (1300 GMT) are expected to place Nigeria ahead of continental powerhouse South Africa as new and fast-developing sectors such as telecoms, music and local film industry, Nollywood, are considered in the GDP rebasing.

Following the adjustment, Nigeria's economy is expected to increase by as much as 60 percent, taking it from $264 billion past South Africa's $384 billion.

Nigeria, with 170 million people is about three times the size of South Africa, but its economy is the second-largest on the continent, after South Africa.

Africa's leading crude producer has enjoyed high rates of growth, notwithstanding widespread corruption, poor governance, rampant oil theft and a raging Islamist insurgency in the north.

The annual growth rate averaged 6.8 percent from 2005 to 2013 and the economy is projected to grow this year at a rate of 7.4 percent, according to the International Monetary Fund.

That compares to a little over five percent between 2005 and 2008-9 in South Africa, which has struggled to go beyond 3.5 percent since.

Analysts say while at this stage we can only speculate how big the impact of the rebasing will be, the actual size of the adjustment is probably of less significance than the psychological effect this will have on perceptions about Africa.

It would be interesting to see how international relations will be affected when South Africa is no longer the largest African economy. South Africa is, for example, the only African country represented in the G20.

For Nigeria, the rebasing will probably not mean a significant change, but it will improve the country's balance sheet and its credit rating. This should lead to lower borrowing costs for the government, which is ultimately beneficial for the country's citizens.

It will also shore up Nigeria's image and make it interesting as an investment destination for foreigners, a status hitherto enjoyed by South Africa.

But analysts cautioned against viewing the new figures as a sign of development, noting that South Africa is still way ahead in terms of GDP per capita, infrastructure and governance.

Nigeria still faces an immense challenge in terms of infrastructure deficits. Slow ports, bad roads and a lack of electricity are some of the major factors hampering business activity.

Despite its vast oil wealth, the last available World Bank figures from 2010 indicated that a staggering 84.5 percent of Nigeria's 170 million people lived on less than $2 a day.

"For the average person on the street, it (rebasing) really does not have any meaning," Pat Utomi, professor of political economy at the Lagos Business School, told AFP.

"To a very large extent, Nigeria remains a poor country with very serious infrastructural challenges," he said.

Utomi advised policymakers to take advantage of the rebasing to improve the living conditions of the people.

"The focus should be on how to transform the huge human capital available in the country to output that will help to reduce poverty and create jobs," he added.
