I think it is more treasonous and seditious to run the economy of a rich nation like ours into the ground and still be clueless or ignorant of the magnitude of the offence under the guise of "YENTIE OBIA" mantra of the NDC.

While Dr. Lartey's suggestion might not fly with a lot of Ghanaians, I think he made a very good observation that the rampant and bold corrupt practices by our politicians can only be stopped or eliminated by a good dose of military rule.

Corruption has eaten deeply into the fabric of the Ghanaian society that only a 'miracle' can eradicate this social evil and disease.

If only we will be truthful with ourselves as Dr. Lartey is, we will all come to the same conclusion.

Ghanaians are just in a dreamland if we think another political party will come into power and eradicate or stem the incidences of massive corruption that has gutted our political landscape and our everyday lives.

'Acountability' is a word lost on the African Leader.
So until the military comes in to clean things up, we are forever going to remain 'up the creek without a paddle'.

And that's the gospel truth whether we like it or not.

If only we knew how 'prophetic' Dr. Lartey's words are or will be later on, we would sit up and listen.

I know it's a bitter pill to swallow but we all know 'democracy' as the African politician understands it, doesn't wash in African politics. It will never because it breeds and promtes monumental corruption as there are no checks and balances in place to stem the level of corruption and thievery by our African political leaders. The only check and balance is to wait for the end of their term in office and vote them out (if we get lucky to get a clean and unrigged elections) by which time, the damage would already have been done.

What is happening in Ghana today is a prime example of the failure of democracy in Africa.

There are no brainy, truthful and selfless politicians of Nkrumah's kind left in any corner of Africa and there won't be any for a long time to come.
This is true because what the next generation of young future politicians see is the notion created by our corrupt leaders that one gets into politics to get unimaginably rich by hook or crook. In other words, thievery and corruption are the orders of the day in a politician's life.

Any political party that promises you anything other than thievery and corruption is full of BS.

I understand the frustration of Dr. Henry Herbert Lartey but I don't agree with him. Since our independence, the military intervened in our politics several times and we did not benefit in a way that will warrant a return to military rule.

Rawlings ruled for almost 20 years but he could not eradicate corruption. His men (PNDC) is perpetrating corruption today. During his rule Ghana experienced the "Rawlings Chain" without any meaningful development to mach the period he stayed in power. In fact, he and his family have been accused of corruption but he has not attempted in one instance to clear the air satisfactorily.

If the Dr. could remember, Acheampong and his gang of adventurists were killed by Rawlings because of corruption as he claimed.

He is not fit to stand for elections either as an MP or President because what he said is treasonable and a danger to the Constitution of Ghana. He should be disqualified for running for any public office in the future.

Military governments never stopped corruption in Ghana as well as did not improve Ghana's development. In fact, the military instituted corruption into the fabric of Ghanaian society such as "kalabule". He has forgotten that the soldiers are also Ghanaians and therefore have the same symptoms of corruption, incompetence and mismanagement.

In fact, Ghana retrogressed under military regimes. Moreover, under military governments, corruption and mismanagement are worst because they are unaccountable to the people. At least, under the current government MPs can ask questions, even if they are ineffective. The public also have their say on radio, television, the print and social media.

Thanks to democracy and freedom of speech he was able to say what he said and be free. Under military government, he would have been arrested for suggestion that multiparty democracy elections should be held. He is more or less inciting the overthrow of a democratically elected government of Ghana and that is treasonable. He should be ashamed of himself.

The man made a lot of sense except for the call for military rule. He said, “We have to earn more from our exports such as oranges, pineapples, pawpaw, mangoes as well as other fruits and vegetables by value addition. Ghana cannot rely on cocoa alone for a lifetime at the expense of other products,”

He explained, “When the total dollar value of a country's imports exceeds the total dollar value of its exports, the country has a trade deficit. This means the country is exporting fewer goods than it is importing. When a country's trade deficit increases, the value of that country's currency depreciates against the currency of its trading partner countries.”

What the news report says is that he's calling for a military rule, not for an overthrow of a consitutionally elected government! Military coup d'etat or overthrow of an elected govt is not the only way to obtain a military rule!

It seems Mr Lartey's effusions are more a reflection of frustration about how the growing economic crises in the country than they're a proposition for a military rule!

Havind said all this, I still don't think that military rule per se is what it will take to remedy the economic and political troubles of Ghana.

How could you wish for a military rule when you are a leader of a political party?! This is indeed outrageous. Obama has time and again hinted on what we need as a continent, namely strong institutions, but what do we see in Ghana? a very strong executive power which time and again fall into the wrong hands-people of dubious character, inept people and also murderers. We must review our constitution and ensure that the powers of the president is reduced considerably since they tend to abuse these powers while the parliament all the time is more less is a rubber stamp institution.
Until we get this right,then coupled with the political immaturity displayed by most of the Ghanaian voters, I'm afraid the future looks very bleak for Ghana.

The education Africans receive is usually devoid of creativity and intellectual curiosity. This guy has soon forgotten that Ghana actually retrogressed under every military rule. Granted, Mahama and his administration are not only incompetent, but also corrupt to the point of blatant criminality. This notwithstanding, there are avenues to address the maladministration of the present Mahama government. You can seek the intervention of the law courts and also vote them out at the polls.

Instead of calling for the worse of two evils, the military, the party leader should be doing everything to see to it that the present government is voted out at the polls. The only conclusion from Dr. Lartey's comments is that he is not competent to lead a party, and is just wasting his time and that of the few people who are thoughtless enough to follow him. He is a disgrace to Ghana and a sorry excuse for a party leader.

We need to learn to take some possiting ideas out of every statement that anybody says. We don't have to buy the whole idea. The problem is way bigger than we sit down here and talk about. People in positions of authority should be held accountable for their actions. The public should be educated to be able to demand accountability and transparency. Officers found guilty of mismanagement should be dealt with in the appropriate manner and not given a slap on the wrist. People in positions of authority should be made aware that they are not above the law. From the President downwards, all should be made accountable. It is unfortunate that people in power use the officer of the law to uphold their corrupt practices so that those who whistle blow on corrupt officials are made to pay the price of exposing such corrupt officials.

Check who formed the academic brains around the military adventurists of PNDC! They prop up meaningless, fruitless and brutal dictatorship disguised under the garb of social justice and so called accountability in men in uniform! If what this man is calling for carries any sense of reality Ghana shouldn't find herself in this mess!

What else does one need to accept the plain fact the military is no solution to nationals economic problems not excluding corruption? At the minimum their adventure no matter how brief adds to the problem, it deepens the woes of the nation and sets the clock of development decades backward!

What? Did Jerry John Rawlings' adventure eradicate corruption? If the indemnity clause in the constitution is scraped and an independent jury sits to subject his rule to microscopic investigation I bet we would stand in utter awe the depth of rot his rule left behind!

No problem under the sun is insurmountably! The problem is we don't have the right leadership! Dr. Lartey should point out just one nation on the planet that has made economic strides and implanted social decorum in freedom under the canopy of military rule!

Problem two is US the electorate- some of us must keep quiet and dance gapingly to the tune of bad and poor management by government because we chose to elect the men and women in power! We fail to go for people we're even sure are capable to deliver but because of unproductive tradition of political allegiance we would rather elect familiar but unsuitable persons to power!

Bring on the soldiers and you can be sure whatever they would trumpet up would for sure receive spontaneous jubilation from a section of the populace. That is natural for even evil men in history had a following (want example? Adolf Hiltler).That is pure mirage; it's a simple transitory! It won't breed any significant solution! History is replete with such!

Bad and dirty politics has conclusively been the bane of our national socio-economic emancipation. The antidote is never military rule! Rather the answer is within our reach like all progressive nations have chosen to do...wise decisions to elect selfless and hardworking leaders that would create enabling environment for booming economy and also ensure efficient institutions exist to uphold unbridled rule of law and the tenets of the constitution!

The central bank should be independent as well as an economic group or committee that does the right thing (long term strategic solutions) and not short term policies to help politicians win elections but make the country suffer long term. For example, look at the election petition, who wrote into law that the incoming president should be inaugurated and then if they find that he did not win, bring him down including all his appointees and then the new president is placed into office. Now which nitwit wrote this without thinking. Even an Ant can plan better that this. And I don't even see any attempt to fix this. Shame. What do they do in that parliament rather that worry about their salaries and giving themselves loans to build houses. Every London, how can you pay for your house in 5 years and no one asks you a question? impossible, Inland Revenue which is independent will be at your house in the morning to provethe source of your the cinome you used and the associated tax you paid in that income. I have this one question to ask Dr. Lartey - What would you do if you were to be voted the President NOW. Are you telling Ghanaians that you wouldn't have any solutions to the problems facing the country so the Armed Forces should be brought in to salvage the ailing economy and what-have-you?
Just for spilling this out means you are not a Presidential material so please, do us the favor of getting yourself out of the so called candidates who, just like you don't have the slightest idea as to how to solve problems.
A President is supposed to be a person who, when it comes to crises like what Ghana is facing or going through now, can come out with solutions to curtail such crises.
Ghana's problems can all be solved in less than one term (four years) if the leader knows what he is doing and not on the "throne" just to enrich himself and his cronies.
Ghana at this time needs a leader who loves the country and believes within himself that a good name is better than riches and hence, not team up with his peers to steal from the
national coffers.
Corruption as seem by Ghanaians to be a cancer is not something that cannot be cured. This is like Ebola to America who believes that a patient can be quarantined and saved from this terrible disease even though it is deadly.
If the leader's will is to bring all, and I mean all to book and to let the law work, corruption can be eradicated from the society once and for all - not by the gun but by following the laid down laws or rules and implementing what the law says by imprisoning culprits or making culprits pay dearly for their corrupt acts.
Within four years, the situation in Ghana can be turned around with not only the best economy but better hospitals, schools, roads, our own Ghana Airways, Black Star Lines - infrastructure - and jobs for the millions who are looking.
There wouldn't be anything like National Service, a scheme used to just fool new graduates. Why should there be a two year break in one's education if the person is prepared to go all the way for his/her doctorate?
Just because the Government can't create jobs for the people, they are using this to make the students feel that after all, I have something going on after graduating from the university - national Service- this is a hoax.
People should know that jobs will never come to us unless we have the brains to look at our situation and create something to alleviate that situation. This is how jobs are created.
Why should Ghana at this time allow sackets of water to be sold just to litter the whole place with the environmentally unfriendly plastic bags everywhere?
Why not encourage the manufacture of bottled water at least in the regions - these plants will definitely hire some of the "un-beings" around and at least help to better their future. The product is also more healthy if some unscrupulous beings won't attempt to use tap-water instead. Just think about the problem and do something about that it and we can get rid of the so-called unemployment in the nation.
The mind is a terrible thing to waste and these graduates not giving the opportunity to study will only give us parliamentarians who don't even know the difference between "trees under schools or schools under trees"
Wake up Ghana for we can do better.

Why do we need to be threatened at gun-point before doing the right thing? The Military has nothing new to offer us for development than what we already have.

Yes, it has been amply shown how a firm, soft-dictatorial Capitalist environment helped propel the emergence of the 'Asian Tigers' for Success. But after what we experienced under various forms of dictatorship, Ghana need not choose that form of governance to expect the best from our Leaders and our fellow Citizens.

Surely, we have retrogressed into Corruption. I have, elsewhere, indicated how we have allowed Corruption to resurrect with a vengeance, more immune to any existing Laws against the vice. But that is partly due to folks' urge to defy the drastic extra-judicial measures that were imposed on them during the last Military rule. Even though the 1978-79 Military intervention under J.J. and Boachie Gyan is believed in some circles to have been opportune to curtail the deepening Kalabule of that era, the excesses by the Military in doing so, created a certain defiance among folks to do worse when they saw the Military recoil into the Baracks.

Many people who were flogged for illegal Commercial activities, or had their wares confiscated, most likely came back into the 'game' to recoup all they lost and more. Then, our Politicians who now know the Military has no more appetite for Coups also saw an opportunity to milk us to the bone. Even if the fear of the Military could deter many from Corruption, when the Military goes back to the Baracks, people would attempt to do worse to catch up, so long as their sense of values remain poor. Besides, we do not even have any guarantees that the Military itself would not be perpetrating Corruption against us. And if they would, how would we reclaim sanity and fairness?

It is all about our general waned sense of fairness, morals and patriotism. Many of us only care about how much wealth they accumulate, regardless of how they make it. That is what is killing us. If our Parliamentarians and Law Enforcement were any different, they could enforce even only the existing Laws in full and almost all would be well. But they are all infected with the Corruption bug. Either they simply look away for the crime to continue, possibly led by their cronies, or they are themselves part of the crime spree. We need not offer specific examples. The fact is indisputable that the Parliament only alleges corruption against their respective opposing Political Party, at best. And it does not care to build any consensus across Party lines to pressure the Law Enforcement Agencies to act on the existing anti-Corruption Laws, period!

But the Public is not dumb. When People smell Corruption, they know what it is that stinks so much. When they see it they know it. When our Politicians in various positions, including the MPs, refuse to declare their assets before taking up those positions and after they leave, what should we make out of it, seeing their monumental rise in affluence from where we saw them starting off?

One of the huge problems that Ghana is facing are Ghanaians parading as Ph.Ds and passing comments which will make one ask the question:how and where did they get their doctorate degrees?
I have been reading very funny ideas about the causes of the depreciation of the GHC,and the solution from EVEN economists.
Albeit,i do not expect a Ph.D to know everything,especially disciplines outside one's area of specialization,some of these discussions are freely obtainable on the internet.It takes just a few minutes to research these stuffs.
Why don't they dedicate a few minutes of their time to research before they express their opinions?
It is very troubling to hear such hollow and ridiculous utterances from the well read who are held in high esteem and ought to know better.
There is corruption everywhere.The difference is the existence of the structures to combat it and a committed leadership.
Ghana lacks the structures:a demotivated law enforcement and a poor and sluggish judicial system.And of course,an uncommitted and questionable leadership.

It seems Dr. Lartey is confused.Prior to Constitutional Rule, the country was governed under military government more than civilian. I can't agree with this call.

Respectfully, I don't think Dr. Lartey willfully means what it’s been reported, but if he said that then he misspoke as a result of the frustrating circumstances stemming from the harsh economic difficulties prevailing in Ghana. The people of Ghana deserve a passionate and democratic visionary leadership to form a dedicated government that cares for the welfare of its people and not to corrupt. For over 50 years Ghanaians have been mislead, robbed, cheated and seduced by its leadership and still does. Generations have come to experience a legacy of hopelessness and destitute future; unreliable and undependable for sustainable economic growth. People of Ghana have been taken advantage by a several thieves and thugs who are unaccountable and careless. For years it’s been very lousy and easy to say anything flavored to sweeten to elect them; and therefore the reason for such decayed economic stagnation for several years. Ghana has many sustainable resources, but lacks a knowledgeable, charismatic and visionary leader for diversification result. I am trusting faithfully in God to provide this leadership in 2016.
