I do not see clearly any solution offered by all these groups who were put together for this purpose. All I read was a suggestion without any clear practical solution. Maybe when the NPP comes to power then they can implement it because Mahama won power based on the existing system and the constitutional Review Committee sat for over a year and none of these groups saw it fit to go and offer their suggestions until it was over? Politics through the back door? Hmmm Ghana!

Kwaku, you couldn't have said it any better. The CRC was opened to individuals and interest groups. For one full year the IEA was not in Ghana, not on earth but probably in Mars so they did not know that there was a constitutional review process underway nationwide. What kind of people are these so-called intellectuals, stink-tanks and pastors? Besides this what do they mean by "winner-takes-all"? A political party is voted into power based on what it believes in and how it intends to govern the country. Monkey don't mix with dogs do they?

Here. Just look at the deep internal wranglings taking place within the NPP,and tell me if it makes any sense to strangle any ruling govt with constitutional impositions of appointees nominated by so-called independent bodies such as the IEA itself? Until we disabuse our minds of certain prejudices, and accept the sovereign will of the people ss being paramount, then I can confidently predict that no amount of tinkering with our consitution would produce the the pie-in-the-sky results being talked about here! Let me be blunt and say that I sense a high level of distrust on the part of this c`ttee with the ordinary voter, who is made to appear as being incapable of making the right political choice. What are we aiming for, insitutional 'gridlock' or what?
Do these 'independent' bodies who are to be vested with appointing powers fairly represent a cross-section of the our populace? Let me cite just two dominant influential groups for your consideration, the GBA and AMA. And how come nominally apolitical groups like the IEA and IMANI GHANA are now coming up with all these belated pleas to slow down the CRC`s work, when they failed to make inputs at the outset? Are they not familiar with the political calender in this country? We have to be very careful about messing around with important political documents such as our constitution. And if people think that the idea of proportional representation[with all its drawbacks]is too cumbersome for this country at this point in time, let` all envision the guaranteed chaos that will ensue when disparate unelected repsentatives of "Yente Gyae" groups are introduced into the political mix. Certan people are not serious and sincere in the kinds of things they wish for this once proud nation!

Consider the potential for an appointee from an opposition party who campaigned against a the winners policies to derail the efforts of a government. Sacking such a person will also generate another confusion. let us think deep about this too. What about all parties that participated in an election be offered appointments on performance proportional basis. In this case the party makes input into the appointment based on a set criteria.

We are trying to change the system just because someone finds himself in opposition and thinks the system should have been the other way round. We should be careful not to create a situation that we would be caught by our own decree.
By the way, can those proposing this system called "winner takes all" show us one example on the African continent where it has been practised and found successful? We want an African example because we know the black man practices politics differently.
We must be careful we don't put a rope around our own necks.

Both political parties have been in opposition before. They are therefore in a better position to discuss the ill-effects of this Winner-Takes-All system. The reason why the NDC government has failed woefully is because of the non-chalant attitudes of the opposition who have been sidelined by the government. Remember, no government will stay in power forever. If we miss the chance to reform the system now, it may be irreversible in the future when NPP have themselves entrenched in power.

No party can not "entrench" itself in power as we have seen. Bad governments are and will be removed no matter what they do or try to do. The NPP has always been "non-chalant" even when in power. Its history of sabotage and violence is well documented. I blame the NDC for trying to be Mr. Nice and accommodating a dangerous enemy. Right from the day the NPP lost the last election they have taken the government hostage but the NDC seems not to realize that and to fight back. As long as the NDC continues to play the good guys their party in government will be sabotages and lead to a complete failure. Time to act is now. As for these bad losers among the clergy and the academia they can just go burn because winner-takes-all will not be changed now.

Because history has shown that "appeasement" does not work! And in our part of the globe,it is always construed as a sign of weakness on the part of the individual or group making the accommodation possible.

The fact that key persons know thy can benefit from appointments in opposing winners is a recipe to breed intra-party undercutting because of internal squbles. Political parties must be rather resourced to compete vibrantly and understand that if you loos you can still help by being a vibrant opposition. No weak party must hide behind this kind of arrangement.

This is a fine way of promoting union govt. Please strengthen political parties. Better still let us form two strong national parties and rotate power every five years. This will even take away the heavy cost of election and campaigning. We will only vote for candidates submitted by the party for presidential elections whiles the parliamentary elections goes general.

The sages said sanity begins at home so let Palmar Buckle and the Catholic Church respect the right of members of the traditional religions to the freedom of conscience first before putting up this trash. How many Italian Communist are on the Papal Council and how many socialists are even in the U.S. senate and congress. What these people are proposing is a precept for disaster. After all their masters are in Rome, Bremen, London and Jehda.

Until recent happenings in the NPP came to light,I could not believe poeple yearning for change could be denied nomination papers, or that fair elections a powerful body like its National Coucil, could be conducted within a 24-hr turn around time! Let us not muddy the already murky political waters we have in yhis country!
