Great news indeed! Big lesson to be drawn here. Agriculture does not only ensures food production and security for the Ghanaian populace, but more importantly increased agricultural productivity will lay strong foundation for the needed industrialization for all African countries including Ghana. One great Ghanaian economist once put it correctly, "If agriculture is stagnant, industry cannot grow". That is, agriculture and industrialization, particularly for home market (import substitution) must grow progressively at the same time. If the Government can take a cue from this, they will even increase the agriculture budget beyond the 10% of GDP recommended under the Maputo Declaration. We need to equally invest in rehabilitating our cocoa farms and encouraging the youth to venture into cocoa plantations which should be run as commercial ventures (with shareholding taking up by Government, businesses and the public at large), in hopes of increasing out export earnings. These simple reforms in the agriculture sector will tremendously increase the sectors contribution to GDP and not to mention the livelihoods of those who engage in it.
