The Bank of Ghana (BOG) has no Eastern Regional headoffice. I don´t believe that the BOG has accurate data of the economic activity in the at least 12 Akyem districts which make up more than half the population on the region. The GDP and GNI of these Akyem districts are very high. They stem from:
Gold mining
Diamond mining
Cocoa
Oil Palm (the largest in West Africa)
Timber
Software development
etc
The money supply and capital in the at least 12 Akyem districts are wholly inadequate. BOG must remove impediments to the setting up of rural banks in these districts and encourage ADB and GCB to open branches in these districts.
The government must further ensure that wholly owned Ghanaian banks, including rural banks, get at least 80% of the banking revenue.

No disputes that agriculture is good for economic growth, employment, food security, and so on. However, the issue we have in Ghana is not some learned politicians telling us the importance of agric, its about what can be done to make these importance become reality for the nation.
Unfortunately, this forum that was meant to tackle systemic and other external issues hindering agric in Ghana and how current agric policies address those issues were left out.
I'm not agric expert or economist but what I can say by common sense is that, decisive efforts must be made through proper ways to deal with the issues. We cannot push our youth to agric while we still face;
1. Land reform issues. We seem to have land but the improper land management, chieftancy issues, litigation, etc. are depressive area in agric. What land reform legislative instrument or policy is promoting agric in Ghana?
2. Over the period, agric products that emphasis on 'white man's export food' as to help win comparative advantages has turned to be complete disadvantage to Ghana. Comparatively, if we had invested our resources in other alternatives, what has been the cost incurred for this continuous primitive agric we have currently? How could we spend our resources on agric commodities that put food on white man's table and empty bowls on our own tables. Products llke cocoa, coffee, etc we do not control prices because all countries producing are poor and therefore cannot even strategically form cartels to push prices up. More so, no concerted efforts to process locally to add value, or store to 'interfere' with DD&SS in order to control prices in our favour? When can we make gains whiles we anxiously serve white man with our resources without reciprocal gains. In international geography, consumers of our agric exports are the main beneficiaries of our land, labour, capital, etc. Technically, the white man is using Ghana as their farm for cheap products because their comparative natural conditions cannot produce those cocoa, coffee, etc wasting our resources. If they could produce those items in their countries they would by now exporting cocoa, coffee, etc to us. Why don't we even think of exporting the product like rice, wheat, etc in case the don't buy or give us cheap prices we then can eat them at home instead of importing them? Where are the book longs? How could we put food on some peoples, tables and go hungry here?
3. With better technology, we need smaller percentage of our resources in agric. We cannot push our youth to be labourers for producing white man's food. White man's children don't farm to feed Ghana, they go to school. Let our youth acquire education that would empower them to improve our technology for long term diversification of Ghana from production of primary products to sophisticated goods as white children do. We have future, Bill Gates, facebook, Warrens, etc here who should not as their fathers did farm cocoa and live like puppets for some people.
4. The few farmers we have currently can with proper financial supports do better. Where is the money? Agric banks are helping Mokola people import rice, cooking oil, chicken feet, etc. isn't it? The banks need guarantees for returns of their money because structures for agric in Ghana make that area risky investment. When government steps in too the same Abu Sakara & co politicians would chop the money to thwart efforts without planning.
6. Where are the agric support services? Veterinaries, storage or industrial freezers, transportation, marketing, processing centres, oh my God. Should they produce the raw materials to rot before we say bumper harvest? Current food market standing at $313bn to $1tn, do we think some black magic, Okomfo Anokye, prayers, etc would catch the money from the skies? Oh my God!
7. I'm angry to continue!

I say 'useless' because we have heard of this advice to the youth since Independence. When the CPP got the chance they formed Workers' Brigade and pumped money into uniforms, boots, implements, etc., and put people to work who are not interested in farming on State Farms resulting in laziness, stealing and diversion of funds and eventual production losses with no profit made whatsoever to make the project sustainable. If Abu Sakara is serious he should see to the creation of a fund (not like SADA!) where graduate youth who are interested in Agric. can access; he should see to the nationalisation of all lands in Ghana ( with compensation to the so-called owners) and lease them to the graduate 'neo-farmers' (to borrow from the CPP's own term of 'neo-colonialism'); he should see to the assistance of these 'neo-farmers' with seeds, mechanisation etc. We have had too much useless talk already!

If we take Agriculture seriously much of our problems would be solved. Food is expensive in Ghana, that is not acceptable. Taking the vast arable lands that could be converted into farming lands lie wasted. The blame is partly Government and the citizens who lack interest in the sector, so the Government needs to do more to attract farmers not only the youth. The target should be those who are interested in farming and giving the right support I think we go far in Agriculture. Check and see, in most countries the youth are not interested in farming not only Ghana. If the right support is there we do not need very one to involve in farming. A little over 5% of the population can sustain and produce enough for export. Most farmers in other countries who really produce for home consumption and export are few and the elderly, in fact most merchandised farmers are old up to 80 years. So the campaign should not only be the youth but any able interested person in farming giving the right backing would do the trick. Not just farming but organized farming.

I think the whole concept of agriculture should be modified and attuned to modern times.
The word "farming" itself is quite obsolete, now being not too different from "gardening". Modern technology has transformed the entire field into mass production systems.
We now deal with FOOD PRODUCTION.
Along with that come a myriad of professions: food production (FP) managers, FP scientists, FP engineers, FP technologists (deal with the use of digital technologies, internet, and electronic devices), FP analysts, FP field technicians (formerly "farmers"), FP economists, FP pathologists (deal with crop diseases), FP processing engineers (deal with food storage technologies),
FP meteorologists (deal with weather pattern analyses, forecasts), FP transportation agents, etc.
See how many cool jobs have been created already? These are endeavors the youth would definitely love!
