The Local Government is very incompetent. They refuse to increase property taxes for residents of the big cities. Imagine a million dollar house at East Legon paying 100 cedis as property tax. Obviously it shows how "intelligent" the people at the local government are. Why should the government bear the cost of cleaning the cities. The cities should collect enough revenue to fund these activities. That will allow the government to spend the limited resources on the needed infrastructure the nation needs. That is if someone does not decide to pocket it. What kind of people are we? Where is our God given conscience? God save Ghana

The Minority Leader's persistent complaint about electorate failing to retain long serving parliamentarians in parliament, always baffles me. If Ghanaians should pay heed to his advice and do as he suggests, then there should not be new MPs in Parliament any time soon. So should we wait till the 'Mugabe' MPs become incapacitated by nature before we vote a total new, 'inexperience' crop of MPs to Parliament? Where did the Minority Leader and his colleagues acquire their experiences? Outside Parliament? If electorates had not voted out sitting MPs, would it have been possible for THESE EXPERIENCED Parliamentarians to get to the House to gain their EXPERIENCES? If politicians claim they have Ghana at heart, then the should start grooming their potential parliamentarians. More importantly, well packaged courses must be introduced in our Universities to adequately prepare our future parliamentarians.

Russian anti-GMO activists raise funds for ‘first-ever’ independent intl research
May 17, 2014 11:31
RIA Novosti/Igor Zarembo
As Russian MPs ponder over a draft bill that could see GMOs outlawed, the country’s chief genetic safety activist tells RT she is skeptical about the legislative initiative and urges ‘long-overdue’ independent international research.
GMO production and distribution is likened to terrorism by the authors of a draft bill submitted to the Russian parliament earlier this week. It’s not the first comparison of the kind, according to Elena Sharoykina, director of the Genetic Safety Public Association (GSPA), a 10-year-old NGO in Moscow, Russia’s major campaigner for GM-free food and agriculture.
In an interview to RT, Sharoykina recalled a statement made by the NATO Committee on the Challenges to Modern Society in the Belgian city of Liege in 2004, in which it warned that GMOs may be used as a genetic weapon.
“If serious international experts on security who have close ties with the scientific community say this is possible then there’s no smoke without fire,” Sharoykina said.
The GSPA director is still skeptical about the draft bill, as she sees no way in which the legislation could be enforced in practice, as it would be hard to prove a direct link between certain GMOs and health or environmental problems.
The activist however cites some disturbing experiment results, like the one GSPA conducted with the help of the A.N. Severtsev Institute of Ecology and Evolution in 2010.
“We conducted an experiment on hamsters taken from the natural environment,” Sharoykina said. “We had a group that was given standard feed-stuff plus pure soy and another group which had their standard feed-stuff combined with GM soy. The animals which were eating GMO did not have their third generation born.”
Elena Sharoykina, director of the Genetic Safety Public Association (GSPA). Photo from vk.com/oagbru
The GSPA director confesses it was a modest, underfunded experiment and a more serious and comprehensive one is needed and is going to be conducted in Russia. The NGO has already enrolled a team of researchers from the US, France, the UK, China and Russia and will make sure the experiment will comply with all international standards. It’s also going to be available for everyone to follow online.
The GSPA is raising funds from as many sources as possible for the experiment to come up to the group’s claims – the first-ever independent international research on GMO.
Until results of this kind of experiment become available, Russia should abstain from opening its market to GMOs, despite economic losses the step might incur, the expert says.
“How can we think about money when we’re talking about the health of our close ones?” Sharoykina asks. “Russia has huge territories and doesn’t need GM foods. Moreover, we have all the chances of dominating the clean, unmodified food market.”
After entering the World Trade Organization, Russia was expected to allow GM foods production and distribution. However, in March Russia’s president said the country was able stay GM-free without violating its obligations to the WTO.
In April, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev told MPs that Russia will not plant GM seeds for at least three more years due to delays in creating the necessary infrastructure. Earlier Russia had expected to allow planting such seeds from June 2014.

There is a place where you can be sure that you would find a representative (MP) from every part of Ghana year round gathered together to deliberate on the future and the current state of this country. Where is that? Parliament house of course. If there is such a place then how should the place and the people there be treated in the scheme of things? What priority should such the house be given in the governance of the country? If there is such a place then what kind of people should we send there and how should we assess their performance?
In the load shedding exercise it is imperative that some key areas be left out. This should include where the three arms of government work and reside like Sakumono where MPs (representatives) reside and flag staff house and osu castle where the President works and resides. Where the chief justice works and resides should also be included. It should also include the premises of key government institutions like ministries.
After winning an election a newly elected Parliamentarian must leave his constituency and come to Accra the National capital to represent his constituency while at the same time providing feedback to his constituents. arliament must also provide a readily available renovated residence to a newly elected parliamentarian. Accommodation in Accra is expensive and not every newly elected parliamentarian will have the money to rent a home in the national capital as he or she may have exhausted all his or her funds campaigning for office.

How can parliament in an excellent democratic dispensation be broke, if not under the Mahama/Amissah Arthur NDC gov't?
The NDC gov't would want Ghanaians to believe that it is working towards addressing their newly found catchphrase which is "strengthening of institutions". However the results so far shows a rather cataclysmic deviation from this mantra and propagandist thrust.
It is on record that under the Mahama led NDC gov't, institutions such as CHRAJ has been starved of funds and cannot deliver on their mandate per the constitution. EOCO another body tasked to check rot and financial malfeasance and outrageous sleaze in the country has also been starved of funds to the point that, the institution has to dip it's hands into seized funds to execute their mandate, pending the release of funds from the Mahama led NDC gov't. Indeed, the NHIS which is by far one of the biggest social intervention programs to address the killer cash and carry system is currently facing the worst crisis ever, since it's inception. The district assemblies common fund has so much been starved of funds with the arrears threatening the decentralization policy and drive of local governance, with the result that in the Greater Accra region for example, because of the lack of funds, filth and waste is threatening to take over the region and bury it in a environmental and sanitation catastrophe and quagmire with it's attendant worsening public health ramifications , should the situation get out of hand. The same can be said for the GETFUND, the school feeding program etc, etc. Parliament which constitutes the legislative arm of gov't as a result of the lack of funds cannot execute it's mandate and exert the needed and required oversight over the executive. If this is not a failed state and a banana republic, then one shudders to think what this type of governance is.
It is very clear that the Mahama led NDC gov't has lost the very essence of governance in a democratic dispensation and need to be massively voted out at the ballot box. Ghana deserves better.

With mp's willingness to approve GMO EPA and gay ism into Ghana,of what benefit are they to us when they don't represent majority of Ghanaian's interest?
Plus they are TOO much of a financial burden on the state.
