The battered and vandalized economy under the Jerry Rawlings administration was rescued and elevated by the Kuffour NPP administration to a lower middle income status before leaving office. The expectations were even higher for the Mills NDC administration because of the new oil find and perhaps the scandals that rocked the previous administration . Ghanaians watched in utter disbelief as their hopes were dashed right from day one. Since the day they took over the reins of administration the downward turn has never been reversed at anytime whatsoever. As if the disappointment of the people, especially the youth, of securing good paying jobs for a better life was not enough, they witnessed a nation steadily slipping into the darkness of hopelessness. Instead of hard work, industry and ingenuity, the nation chose to reward laziness and mediocrity. Whilst the older generation who had been working hard all their lives but were still wobbling in poverty, the younger generation watched in amazement but with keen interest as young graduates who were yet to lift a spanner turn instant millionaires after their spontaneous recruitment into government administration. It was a fairly good idea introducing young blood into the governing structure but it was so poorly executed it sent the wrong signals to especially the severely under employed youth. Who wants to work hard all their lives and be paid a pittance when one can work little yet become an instant millionaire? The administration ended up destroying the value and dignity of labor that build nations. Little or no work but instant gratification became the new work ethic.
In Ghana there's no difference between hard earned money and dirty money. Money is money and its source is never questioned. You can choose to be an armed, pen robber or live on sakawa. If you're successful you become the toast of an immoral society. We cannot build a strong and prosperous nation if we're not putting value to honest work. The trend must be reversed immediately.
