Peer pressure during post adolescence is critically influential at this stage of development. This pressure is more negative abroad than in Ghana.
If we have to choose the lesser of two evils, so be it. Peer pressure in Ghana has its nuances, but it is easier to curb than in America, UK etc. Parents (caretakers) have more corrective power in Ghana.
3. College / University abroad. By that time, the child would have been molded to frown on gang activity. ABOVE ALL, THE FEAR OF GOD SHOULD BE INGRAINED INTO THE CHILD'S PSYCHY.

One of the weaknesses in the Ghanaian and African immigrant communities is that parents have too much pressure to go out and make money so they are not able to communicate with their children. Some of these churches need to concentrate on getting the youth together and even getting them to travel to Ghana together so that they develop broader perspectives. At that age, they think the entire world revolves around them and their small friendship groups. It is up to the churches and community organizations to raise money to keep the youth engaged.

Don't tell me being young nowadays are hard. You don't know what hard is unless you were born in the fifties and sixties and grew up in Ghana in the village. Wake up four in the morning to go for kolanut search, walk half or one mile to the stream to fetch water, and go to school bare footed carrying hour table or chair to sit on in school without even breakfast.
Children today have it easy because of the sacrifices their parents made by going through Nigeria, Lybia, Liberia before landing in Europe or the Americas where these spoiled brats are misbehaving.

The children don't listen to the parents. And what can you do if your child is not listening? kill him? now is time for him to listen to the law.so please don't blame the parent. there are lot of men not responsible taking care of their children and if a child has no role model what happens?

Everyone who has travelled abroard, knows that Ghanaians in particular, have a very good and credible reputation everywhere. This incident, and other crimes involving Ghanaian youths, or Ghanaians in general, are very rare given the large Ghanaian presence in certain foreign countries.
New York City has a very large Ghanaian population, and as far as crime is concerned, Ghanaians are almost invisible. This particular incident is unfortunately a tragic one, where both families have become victims.
There are many examples of children being raised by the same parents, in the same household, who were taught the same values, and who took completely different paths in life to each other, one brother becomes a doctor, the other one an armed robber, parents are not always at fault.
To those who think that beating children is the way to go, please ask yourselves, when was the last time you sat your children down to a book discussion? How much access does your children have to a library, and how many books do you have in your homes? Compares to whips and switches.
I would like you advise stone aged parents and teachers, to lay down their whips and canes, and adopt the principle of not spearing the book and spoiling the child. I have never beaten my children, they are now grown, raised in Harlem, New York, no problem at all.

Another factor for this wild children epidemic and the parents penchant for acquiring wealth. Work from dawn to dusk and live in the slums all in the name of saving enough to build mansions in Ghana. Who would you leave the mansions for if your children end up in jail or, God forbid, die as a result of gang activity? I'm not saying living in a relatively posh area is an antidote to children turning out bad, but at least the risk is less. God help us all!

I totally agree with you. I work as Teen Specialist in one of the world's leading Centers for Drug Addiction and l can tell you that most of the stubborn youth are from the Third-World countries like Sumalia, Nigeria, and Mexico. The common thread l see among this Anti-Social Kids are that their parents work Half-time, Part-time, Full -Time, Time and Half, and All the time. In other words, the parents do not have time for these kids, hence, they have resulted to adopting the Street gang lifestyles. I wished this young guy would have received the Life-Sentence. Though the youth must bear the consequences of their actions, their parents are equally gulty too.
