Nigeria overtake S.Africa as Africa's biggest economy
Nigeria | 6 April 2014
Lagos (AFP) - Nigeria, Africa's most populous country and largest oil producer, is set to emerge as the continent's biggest economy on Sunday when the results of an overdue rebasing of its gross domestic product are announced.
Although United Nations statisticians recommend that countries rebase their GDP calculations every five years to reflect changes in the structure of production and consumption, Nigeria last carried out the exercise in 1990.
So the new figures expected to be unveiled by Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iwela and top government statisticians from 2:00 pm (1300 GMT) are expected to place Nigeria ahead of continental powerhouse South Africa as new and fast-developing sectors such as telecoms, music and local film industry, Nollywood, are considered in the GDP rebasing.
Following the adjustment, Nigeria's economy is expected to increase by as much as 60 percent, taking it from $264 billion past South Africa's $384 billion.
Nigeria, with 170 million people is about three times the size of South Africa, but its economy is the second-largest on the continent, after South Africa.
Africa's leading crude producer has enjoyed high rates of growth, notwithstanding widespread corruption, poor governance, rampant oil theft and a raging Islamist insurgency in the north.
The annual growth rate averaged 6.8 percent from 2005 to 2013 and the economy is projected to grow this year at a rate of 7.4 percent, according to the International Monetary Fund.
That compares to a little over five percent between 2005 and 2008-9 in South Africa, which has struggled to go beyond 3.5 percent since.
Analysts say while at this stage we can only speculate how big the impact of the rebasing will be, the actual size of the adjustment is probably of less significance than the psychological effect this will have on perceptions about Africa.
It would be interesting to see how international relations will be affected when South Africa is no longer the largest African economy. South Africa is, for example, the only African country represented in the G20.
For Nigeria, the rebasing will probably not mean a significant change, but it will improve the country's balance sheet and its credit rating. This should lead to lower borrowing costs for the government, which is ultimately beneficial for the country's citizens.
It will also shore up Nigeria's image and make it interesting as an investment destination for foreigners, a status hitherto enjoyed by South Africa.
But analysts cautioned against viewing the new figures as a sign of development, noting that South Africa is still way ahead in terms of GDP per capita, infrastructure and governance.
Nigeria still faces an immense challenge in terms of infrastructure deficits. Slow ports, bad roads and a lack of electricity are some of the major factors hampering business activity.
Despite its vast oil wealth, the last available World Bank figures from 2010 indicated that a staggering 84.5 percent of Nigeria's 170 million people lived on less than $2 a day.
"For the average person on the street, it (rebasing) really does not have any meaning," Pat Utomi, professor of political economy at the Lagos Business School, told AFP.
"To a very large extent, Nigeria remains a poor country with very serious infrastructural challenges," he said.
Utomi advised policymakers to take advantage of the rebasing to improve the living conditions of the people.
"The focus should be on how to transform the huge human capital available in the country to output that will help to reduce poverty and create jobs," he added.

Nana binladdo is not a unifier, but rather a divider. After Nana disgraceful hiding in London for more six months, Nana binladdo came back to Ghana just to create a confusion and divide the country on regional and tribal basis. Some of us in eastern region can't understand why Nana should ignore a whole " okyehene " and rushed to "Manshia " and offered " Asantehene his highest respect and even said he respected he "Asantehene" more than that of his own grandfather and a paramount chief of Akyen Abuakwa " traditional area . Nana is a digrace to our area, he didn't bother to visit " Okyehene" who is closer to his Nana's Nima residence , from Nana' house to Kyebi , is closer than that of Manshia, but because he is arrogant, he chose to go to Manshia first. We the people of Akyen Abuakwa traditional area want to let Nana addo knows very well that we acknowledged the disrespect he showed to our Okyehene and his elders in the area, we shall respond to his call in the same measure at the right time coming 2016 election.

Chinese Contractors Slap Ghanaian Workers
General News | 7 April 2014
By Daily Guide
According to the workers, they are often given dirty slaps whenever they are explaining issues to the Chinese and could not understand the language.
In view of that, the angry Ghanaian workers have appealed to the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of the area, Madam Priscilla Arhen, to prevail on the Chinese to stop their hostile attitude toward them.
The irritated workers stated that they would have no other option than to clash with the expatriate contractors when they continued with their unfriendly attitude towards them.
'They get angry easily and slap us when we are talking to them, since they don't understand our language and think we are insulting them, when even we are explaining issues to them,' they alleged.
'We cannot be treated this way just because we do not have any other work to do. Please President Mahama, do something about it because we cannot go to their country and molest them in a similar way,' one of the Ghanaians appealed through DAILY GUIDE .
The workers disclosed these and made the appeal when the MCE inspected work on projects being undertaken by the government at Cape Coast.
The projects include the Sports Stadium, Kotokuraba market, Mensah Sarbah school block and a road from OLA to Adisadel College, under the aegis of Urban Roads. Poly Tanks were donated to OLA Training College.
The workers expressed concern about the way they are being paid GH¢10.00 a day as labourers, contrary to the GH¢14.00 a day promised.
Madam Arhen, who expressed shock about the issue promised to talk to the Chinese contractors to desist from the hostile behaviour.
At the Kotokuraba Market, the MCE noted that about 866 temporary stores had been completed and so the remaining materials would be sent to the other site at GBC to build the rest of the stores there.
The Site Engineer, Euson Wu, said they were given two years to complete the project and so they were on course.
Mr. Wu added that 23 toilet facilities as well as three lorry parks would be built for the community.
He disclosed that plans were underway to get in touch with the authorities of the Ghana Fire Service to put fire extinguishers at the place to ensure total safety at the markets.
DAILY GUIDE observed during a visit to the various sites that work was going on well.

This is because they voted the govt into power and thus expect their interest to be protected at all times.
Do you know how many honors Robert Mugabe received from Britain? He was even knighted by the queen and the queen honored him with a state visit to Harare.
However, when Mugabe managed to get his head out of his ass,he realized the Europeans were taking his people for a ride and one thing white people don't like or tolerate is a nigger who thinks critically.
Hence them immediately stripping him of all the credentials they gave him including the knighthood lol.
They then embark on a pr campaign to discredit you .
