Age is only a factor if the candidate in question has some illness or condition that makes him less effective. As far as we all know, Nana Addo is as fit as a fiddle.

We have been witnesses to smart, young Ghanaian men, even those living outside the nation pass so suddenly. Death does not discriminate with age.

The whole age argument is irrelevant. 70 years is really not that old, its unfortunate that in our part of the world this has become a topical issue.

It only serves the parochial interests of a few divisive elements to highlight this issue and dwarf everything else that is even more relevant in considering who to choose as a leader.

Tell me what the youth have that the old does not have apart from strength. Why do we consult the old for wisdom and not the youth? Why is British crown maintain the Queen until she dies? Why is it that the pope almost always stays until death? Why our chiefs and queens do not run in turns? Above all Pre. Mahama is young as compare to Nana Addo, why can’t he use his youthful advantage to fix Ghana economic problems? He is not a leader? He is communication wizard but can’t communicate leadership vision, because he does not have it. Compare Exs. Pres. Rawlings and Pres. Koffuor. Pres. Rawlings who was young and military lieutenant who rule for almost 19 years and scored ‘A’, prior to Pres. Koffuor, who was older and rule 8 years. But after Pres. Koffour 8 years He scored ‘A+++’ which reduced Pres. Rawlings to ‘C+’. The reason while Rawling hate Koffour.
Pres. Mahama and for that matter NDC is in the governance for 6 years now. I agree with Dr Sekou that NDC should not think of even contesting 2016. It will be economically prudence for them to reserve finance than engage in political campaign for 2016 Presidency. Ghana should not allow one political party to govern more than two terms. It was politically disadvantageous for NPP to be in power after 8 year rule. But NDC has disappointed Ghanaians for this extremely bad leadership.

The "old men" in the persons of John Kuffuor and even Atta "mortuary man" Mills have outperformed the "Young Men". Kuffuor has been better than Rawlings and Mills was certainly better than Mahama.

Though Mahama inherited Mill's incompetent team, Mills appeared to have managed them better than Mahama done to date.

I personally do not think its fair to disqualify him based on his age alone. Neither do i think hes too old to run for office. If anything, and baring any mental and medical handicaps, he has one thing on his side--wisdom and experience. However, i do think that it is a problem when and if he's given a priority and as a consequence becomes a shoo-in for the nomination because it simply flies in the face of democracy. The party needs to ensure that Nana, like other contestants, need to have equal access to party resources to make their cases to the electorate and then have the electorate pick who they think is the best candidate. Anything short of that will spell defeat for them again. So Sekou is wrong on two fronts...firstly, hes guilty of ageism by discriminating against Nana based on his age. Secondly, although he has a vested interest in whomever NPP elects as its frontrunner just by virtue of his nationality as Ghanaian, he is in no place to be suggesting who the NPP should and should not nominate as its frontrunner cos he is simply not a card-carrying member. Stop the Ageism, Sekou. You should know better!
