If you think writing a long story full of repetitions, saying the same themes in different ways, quoting all the books you've ever read, giving 30 examples of the same thing and generally hammering on the same things again and again is quality writing then you must think again. Have you read all the earlier versions of what Amin Baraka said about Kwame Nkrumah?
Even Baraka, and Asante Molefi who created Afrocentrism, don't go on like this. They know how to write in direct, terse and simple forms. They know what to include and WHAT TO EXCLUDE. Moreover, they know WHEN TO STOP, especially if it is a journalistic piece.

Hello Afriyie,
I have read nearly all of Dr. Molefi Kete Asante 500-plus scholarly essays. I have read most Afrocentrists. His essays are more dense than any I have read on Ghanaweb. Not too long ago, Afriyie, Dr. Asante sent me essay for Ghanaweb. I had to divide them in five or six parts for Ghanaweb because of its sheer length.
I have also read nearly all of Asante's 79 books. Please don't compare anything I post on Ghanaweb to Asante's or Baraka's. Besides, I am intimately familiar with Baraka's works.
What I post on Ghanaweb is child's play! Please debate the facts and overlook the length. So far, you have not debated a single issue I raise with alternative facts. Tell me where exactly I argued wrongly or falsely and give me your contrary theories.
As of this writing, one of the world's leading authorities on Afrocentricity, Dr. Ama Mazama, has asked me to write for Afrocentricity International.
These are her words when she formally sent me an invitation:
"Dear Brother Francis,
I would like to formally invite you to be a regular contributor to AI's new website,www.dyabukam.com/index.php. The site is being uploaded with documents, and will be online soon. You are a prolific and gifted writer, and we are sure that AI's members and sympathizers would very much appreciate reading your essays. While you focus primarily on Ghana, the essays for AI's website should have a broader geographical scope at times.
Let me know if you think that would be possible.
Sister Ama"
Write to her for confirmation.
Finally, I have had invitations from 9 international journals (most based in the US) to either sit on their editorial boards or publish my articles with them. Don't take these as expressions of boastfulness. They are the facts. I can send you all their names so you can write to them for verification (Send me an email: franciskkwarteng@yahoo.com).
The problem with most of us is that we don't like to read. The other problem is that we hate critical reading. Read THE NEW York TIMES, supposedly the best newspaper in the world, to see how ordinary good journalists write. Visit their website to see how ordinary journalsits write to educate/inform the general public. They write to inform, not to play!
I had a couple of friends who worked for THE NEW YORK TIMES. Mr. Milton Allimadi is one. Read his book and visit the website of his own newspaper "The Black Star News" (Wall Street, New York) to see how good jornalists write for the general public.
Moreover, there is much journalistic shoddiness and intellectual frivolities on Ghanaweb parading as scholarship. In fact, some of the articles I have read by one or two PhD holders on Ghanaweb will not be accepted for a good American high-school project!
Again, I see "most" Ghanaweb readers generally as enlightened and therefore try as much as possible not to underrate anybody's intellegence by presenting ideas as some of these self-proclaimed PhD "scholars" do.
Please debate the facts and stop debating the essay's length. For instance, Kojo T read this very article on modernghana and came here to contribute as well. Nii Ashitey, Brother, Clement Hammah, KOKOTAKO/UK, Kofi Osei, and YAW all read the same article you are crying over. Why are they not complaining about the article's length?
From my position, Afriyie, they catch the drift of my arguments. Please send me any contrary sources you have questioning my views and I shall be happy to read them.
Critical reading is one thing our educational institutions don't teach. This is sad. And critical reading may involve extraordinarily long and convoluted write-ups! I hope you have taken a GRE/GMAT before or taken a class in writing.
Let's learn to read critically and stop making unnneccesarily arguments. Debate the facts even if this article has no intellectual merit. Finally, more longer articles are coming! I will make it short when I have to.
Thanks.

Brother Francis, I have followed your informative articles and sometimes it is sad to read all that has happened to our beloved Ghana and Africa. But am afraid our current Leaders don't give a care for us.
What are we as a nation or the African continent doing to separate our dependence from those that don't want us to develop?
Do we still have strong leadership to stand up for our basic rights as Africans?
Is our leaders taking a stand or stopping the free flow of our mineral wealth out of the continent?
Wasn't Dr. Nkrumah right to say that poverty in the mist of plenty?

Julius Nyerere: 'Without Unity, There Is No Future For Africa'
This an extract from a speech given by Tanzania’s founding president, Julius Nyerere in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, on 6 March 1997 on how he saw African unity in the 21st century.
I have always said that in the quiet of day after a cool and sober reflections many will begin to see the wisdom behind Nkrumahs philosophy and his solution to the African question. One false academic on this forum claimed that Julius Nyerere was opposed to Nkrumah's African unity concept. On the contrary Nyerere was an Nkrumaist and this reflected in his closing remark in this excerpt. This is what he had to say.
“The future of Africa, the modernisation of Africa that has a place in the 21st century is linked with its decolonisation and detribalisation. Tribal atavism would be giving up any hope for Africa. And of all the sins that Africa can commit, the sin of despair would be the most unforgivable. Reject the nonsense of dividing the African peoples into Anglophones, Francophones, and Lusophones. This attempt to divide our peoples according to the language of their former colonial masters must be rejected with the firmness and utter contempt that it richly deserves.
The natural owners of those wonderful languages are busy building a united Europe. But Europe is strong even without unity. Europe has less need of unity and the strength that comes from unity in Africa. A new generation of self-respecting Africans should spit in the face of anybody who suggests that our continent should remain divided and fossilised in the shame of colonialism, in order to satisfy the national pride of our former colonial masters.
Africa must unite! That was the title of one of Kwame Nkrumah’s books. That call is more urgent today than ever before. Together, we, the peoples of Africa will be incomparably stronger internationally than we are now with our multiplicity of unviable states. The needs of our separate countries can be, and are being, ignored by the rich and powerful. The result is that Africa is marginalised when international decisions affecting our vital interests are made.
Unity will not make us rich, but it can make it difficult for Africa and the African peoples to be disregarded and humiliated. And it will, therefore, increase the effectiveness of the decisions we make and try to implement for our development. My generation led Africa to political freedom. The current generation of leaders and peoples of Africa must pick up the flickering torch of African freedom, refuel it with their enthusiasm and determination, and carry it forward.”

As for me, I am insisting that if Kwarteng were a better writer, he would make EXACTLY THE SAME POINTS in a third of the words he has written here. I cringe at Kwarteng's excessive verbosity (as meaning containing more words than necessary). That is why I've stopped reading him, not because he doesn't make sense. And people like you, Nii, don't tell him that! Why?

Hello,
I don't think your not reading me will stop others from reading me. That's not a problem for me. In fact, it does not bother in the least. Dr. Molefi Kete Asante and several others read every single essay I post on Ghana. The fact is that a short essay is not bneccesarily better than a long one. And vice vera.
In fact, I give you the go-ahead to summarise this article and give it to the editor for your friends to read! But let me assure that I am not writing any short essay soon.
Do you have any idea how many readers privately write me to encourage me? Have you asked or written to modernghana and spyghana, for instance, to learn from them why their editors tell me not to stop writing for them?
Write to the editors of spyghana to find out how some American-based Ghanaian readers got in touch with them so they could privately discuss some of my ideas? Ask the editors of spyghana, myjoyonline, and modernghana why they privately write to me to encourage me!
This has nothing to do with my seeking attention! Does anybody force you to read? No. What then is your problem? Does anybody force me to write? No.
Also, Prof. Kwesi Atta Sakyi, a Ghanaweb columnist, has put me in touch with some of the world's leading Ghanains thinkers (he has also sent me a list of influential Ghanaian scientsists) whom he wants me to profile for Ghanaweb readers and here you are complaining about things no one forced you into.
And you know what is interesting? There are some Ghanaweb columnists I don't read. I only read them when readers write to me privately and ask me to respond to such aritles. And I even do this on my won volition. They don't force me. I have my own conscence.
The important fact is that others enjoy my writing. Let's learn to read critically.
Thanks.

You're making a mistake which you, with your intelligence, should really be able to see. Your argument is that other people including professors and editors read and demand your articles so you must be doing something right WHICH YOU CANNOT DO BETTER. It doesn't occur to you that if you write on a topic which is important to people, those people will read it even if the writing is not the best. The fact that those people are reading your work does not mean that the writing process cannot be improved. You are not aware of how many more people would have been your avid readers if you'd been able to distill your work to their basics instead of the longueurs that necessarily come in any excessive work.
You can vow to continue writing these lengthy things (with each part longer than the preceding one) which you can get away with because of the unlimited space that the Internet provides. No print medium worth the salt will allow you this much space. And if you attend an academic conference, no one is going to allow you to read all of your many parts of this topic when others also must present their papers.
In the old GCE O Level days, there was a section in the English paper called Précis which required you to re-write a given passage in a specific number of words. Later, this was changed to Summary and Comprehension. It is all to help us acquire the ability to distill our thoughts in as few words as possible. There is NO piece if writing that cannot be reduced and still retain the major points!
Note, Francis, that I have not said anything against your argument or even your topic. My gripe with you is the excesses you indulge in. So asking me to learn to read critically is irrelevant here. I am not critiquing your work.
I have more to say but I must think of "excessive writing" and end here and not promise you there'll be another part coming...
Cheers.

Afriyie, I cannot help but agree with you on the excessive length of this thought-provoking articles. For a while, I stopped commenting on Francis's article, even though I sometimes read them. I read them because they contain vital information and relevant references. I stopped commenting on his writeups, because, the few times I made harmless suggestions pertaining to some basic writing skills, he was all over the place citing how many editors and journals are chasing him to be their editor or publish his works and so and so forth. The impression I got from his response was that he only seeks to be praised for his works, but not to be criticised. The truth of the matter is that if I submit my work to someone and all I get is praise, surely, I shall not give him anything to read again. Francis thinks differently, he does not see why low brains like should criticise him, when the likes of his mentors such as Asante are fond of his works.
In fact, I had two main technical issues with his write-up. The first is the deliberate attempt to impress with his vebosity and jargons which I felt was uncalled for, considering the readership of Ghanaweb. The second was excessive quotes which clouds and overshadows his own voice. I must say there have been significant improvements since then. I can say confidently that this peace is not verbose, and I can also decipher his voice, despite the length of the essay. That said, there is no doubt, he could have won many readers over, had he expressed his view in one-third the length of this article: Brevity, they say, is the soul of wit.
