We must not discount the contribution of Dr Joseph Boakye Danquah and others. Danquah's work "the constitution of Akyem Abuakwa" convinced the Africans, the British and the world at large that the people of Ghana (Gold Coast) were ready for self government.

As a member of the legislative assembly he vehemently opposed the British decision to setup only one university for British West Africa in Nigeria. His action led to the decision to setup the University of Ghana - Legon.

All this was before Nkrumah came to the scene. But we must also not forget the immense contribution Nkrumah made.

The historical account on how the Gold Coast became Independent Ghana provided by the author, Dr. Kwame Botwe-Asamoah, was to quash the falsehoods of Dr. Kwame Okoampa-Ahoofe (the English and Creative Writing prof. in the US), the foolishness of the ex-president J.A. Kufour who spent Ghana's hard earned money to erect statues for the early traitors, and the Sir John, Nana Akufo-Addo, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, Akadu Mensema of Maryland USA and others in the NPP who continue to talk about property owning society (code words for elitism) which as has been presented was the manifesto of these tribal bigots who were historically and factually intellectually inferior to the son of a goldsmith Kwame Nkrumah.
Those historical narratives were not intended to show where the so-called big six obtained their credentials, their birth rights and privileges but to show they are not only unfit to be placed on any pedestal in Ghana much less on the same footing with Nkrumah. The shame of it all is that this nation, Ghana, and all of its so-called intellectual elite class have been knouted and brow beaten by a classless, tasteless, violent prone NPP party into accepting the lies of J.A. Kufour. I dare say ex-president Kufour is an embodiment of pure evil for as a president of Ghana; he owed the nation and its citizens the dignity to have thoroughly researched for the true and unvarnished history on Ghana instead of the historical narrative provided by his NPP. He, Kufour surely did not sell Ghana Telecom because of mismanagement but because he believes in the ideology that preferred for the state not to own and or operate anything or provide services for its people but allowing competition between the poor and the rich knowing that would enable all the comforts in life here in Ghana to be gobbled up by the rich for the rich only.
I say shame on you, J.A.Kufour, Nana Akufo-Addo, Sir John, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, Dr. Kwame Okoampa-Ahoofe, Akadu Mensama and all the others educated but intellectually limited and morally bankrupt Ghanaians who hide behind the philosophy of selfishness masquerading as property owning society. It is sad there are a whole lot of fools in Ghana who will ride the tribal train to their bitter end and those who will fight for the tribal superiority wagon even as they wallow in misery along with us all. The comforts in life are not reserved rights for individual rich Ghanaian families to trample on neither are we destined to carry the "we" banner for hypocrites who are as flawed in their personal lives everyone else but would rather Ghanaians lived under colonial rule if they could not get the first right to subjugate other Ghanaians after the British.
It is not only clear that Ghana cannot and must not allow Nana Akufo-Addo to become president of this modern day Ghana because of the evil blood that runs in him, but the Jake Obetsibi-Lamptey and Dr. Bawumia of the Dumbo clan are incapable of mercy, remorse and humility; they live and die by the arrogance even as they steal and cheat their way to the top of the Ghanaian social ladder.

This man of letters could certainly do better to help the plight of his fellow men than just revelling and serenading the past, glorifying dead heroes. Can we not move on as a nation and take care of the business of today rather than engage in frivolities and banal issues? The ship of state is sinking fast and instead of a rescue centered discussion the cream of society are talking'anansesem'. Nkrumah must be turning in his grave because our priorities are inverted. I'm sure he'd prefer we took care of the living first before the dead because that's what Nkrumah tried to do in his own way.
If the writer would listen, the Nkrumah/Danquah/Busia followers' hearts and minds were won during the hectic political battles of the 1940s through the 60s and no amount of convincing will change obstinate minds. This is a waste of time. As for the present generation their priorities are far removed from the ideological discordant notes of yester years.

Reading your comment here and you describing some of the historical facts in this article as frivolous and banal is very sad. If you not share the views and facts therein, why did you not say that these are his opinions but described the the way you did?

I did study any serious Gold Coast/Ghanaian history in my school days in Ghana. The history I did was about Ancient Songhai, Mali and Ghana Empires, The British Empire, etc.

Though reading from someone who obviously an Nkrumahist, I am cautious but the fact remains that most of what he wrote are historical facts. A nation that does not know its history is in danger of repeating past mistakes. Even the US has a satellite television channel shows historical programmes, including the civil and independence wars as well as life histories of former and present Presidents.

Was it that you found the contents of the article uncomfortable or you genuinely found them frivolous and banal? Of course, bread and butter issues are important and especially in the current economic difficulties in Ghana they must be discussed. However, it is equally important to today's and future generations to know the history of Ghana. I found the article very interesting reading, though I do not subscribe to the view that one person could be the founding father of a nation.

I wished you had challenged the facts in the articles and provided contrary facts to support you view that the contents are frivolous and banal. Even if they were repetitions and boring, this is the first time me I found them refreshing. By Courtesy of Jerry Rawlings, I have F K Buah's History of Ghana (book) but the it does not contain most of the details in this article. The book coverage is a summary of the struggle for independence with few historical fact compared to this article. Let's us be honest in our debates.

I am aware that another historian from the UP tradition could also produce article that would counteract this and I would not dismissed it as frivolous and banal but compare the two and make up my own mind, especially in today's IT environment that I can click from my kitchen, living and bed rooms to conduct desktop research.

Abrampa must come up with his perspective on recent history of the day based on factual analysis and with materials which are verifiable as Dr Botwe has done.History is important because it traces where we come from, where we are going and whether we are towing the right path.If Abrompa thinks that it all food and no intellectual exercise which creates a healthy mind for development and therefore put food on the table then I pity him.

More so he seems to have bought into the most spurious analysis of Ahoofe and did not compare such infantile analysis with food.Ghana we have a long to go with people like Abrompa.

It is not like the one Prof. Mike Ocquaye have been writing. Do you know one thing, the progenitors of the U.P. tradition hate Nkrumah so much that their progenies are also doing the same. They are the only political tradition that preferred c Mandela to Nkrumah when the issue crop up recently.
